The Miele 2 Phase System

The Miele 2 Phase System uses a basedetergent (UltraPhase 1) and adetergent enhancer (UltraPhase 2). Forthe best washing result, these twoagents are dispensed at separate timesduring the washing process. The 2Phase System cleans both white andcoloured textiles thoroughly.UltraPhase 1 and UltraPhase 2 singleuse cartridges are available to orderfrom Miele or via the internet atshop.miele.com (see end of this bookletfor details).

Liquid detergent/Fabric softener

Refillable TwinDos containers arerequired for liquid detergent and/orfabric softener. These are available toorder from Miele or via the internet atshop.miele.com (see end of this bookletfor details).

How TwinDos works

Intensive

For hard-wearing laundry that is veryheavily soiled. Cleaning efficiency isincreased through more intensemechanical action and the applicationof more heat energy.

ECO

This option reduces energyconsumption whilst maintainingcleaning efficiency. This is achieved byincreasing the wash duration and at thesame time reducing the washtemperature selected.

Extra gentle

This option decreases mechanicalaction in order to reduce creasing.

Extra quiet

This option reduces noise levels duringthe programme. Use this if you want towash during quiet periods (for instance, when children are sleeping). Themachine will activate the “Rinse hold”option and not spin. The programmeduration is longer.

AllergoWash

This option should be used where highstandards of hygiene are required. Moreenergy is used to lengthen temperatureholding times and more water is used toincrease rinsing efficiency. Thegarments must be suitable for drying ina tumble dryer and suitable forironing .

Not all ProgrammeManager optionsare suitable for use with everyprogramme. Please refer to the “Washprogramme chart -ProgrammeManager” for a list ofsuitable programmes.

Page 50: Operating instructions Washing machine - Miele

Extra options

50

Steam smoothing Steam is injected into the drum at theend of the wash process. Reducing themaximum load by 50% will give a betterresult. For steam smoothing to workproperly there needs to be a certainamount of residual moisture still presentin the laundry. The final spin speed istherefore adjusted accordingly.

The garments must be suitable fordrying in a tumble dryer andsuitable for ironing .

ShortFor light soiling with no visible staining.

The wash duration is reduced.

StainsIn order to clean stained laundry moreeffectively, you can choose from a listof various types of stains. The washprogramme will then adapt to the typesof stains selected. You can select amaximum of three stains per washcycle.

Further options

Soak

For heavily soiled and stained itemswith protein stains.

A duration of between 30 minutes and 5hours can be chosen for the soakprocess in 30-minute increments. See“Settings” for more information.

The factory default setting is 30minutes.

Rinse hold

The laundry is not spun after the finalrinse and remains in the final rinsewater. This helps prevent creasing if thelaundry is not going to be removed fromthe drum immediately after the end ofthe programme.

Pre-wash

For laundry with large amounts of dirt,e.g. dust and sand.

Water plus

The water level in the main wash andthe rinses will be increased if the Waterplus Extra option is selected.

You can select by how much the waterlevel is increased (see “Settings - Waterplus level”).

Extra rinse

An additional rinse cycle can be carriedout to give a better rinse result.

The washing machine has fullyelectronic controls with automatic loadrecognition. It takes in the right amountof water required for the programmedepending on the amount of laundryand its absorbency rate.

The programme sequences outlined inthe chart are based on the basicprogramme with a full load.

The washing machine programmesequence display shows which stage ofthe programme has been reached.

Special features in theprogramme sequenceAnti-crease:At the end of the programme the drumcontinues to turn at intervals for up to30 minutes to help prevent creasing.Exception: There is no anti-creasephase in the Woollens and Silks programmes. The door can be opened at any timeduring the anti-crease phase.1) If a temperature of 60°C or higher is

selected, and with and ,two rinses are carried out. If atemperature of less than 60°C isselected, three rinses are carried out.

2) An additional rinse is carried out if:

– there is too much foam in the drum.

– a spin speed lower than 700 rpm hasbeen selected.

– the spin speed as been deselected.3) An additional rinse is carried out if:

– the Extra rinse option is selected.4) Run-up to spin: A run-up to spin is

Cottons and Minimum ironPowerWash 2.0, the washing techniquedeveloped by Miele, is activated in theCottons programme with small andmedium-sized loads and in theMinimum iron programme.

How it works

Conventional washing techniques washwith more water than the laundry canabsorb. This total volume of waterneeds to be heated.

The PowerWash 2.0 washing techniqueonly uses slightly more water than thelaundry can absorb. The water whichhas not been absorbed by the laundryheats up the drum and the laundry andis sprayed into the laundry over andover again. This reduces the amount ofenergy used.

Activation

The washing machine calculates theload at the beginning of the washprogramme. PowerWash 2.0 isactivated if the following conditions arepresent:

– There is a small to medium-sizedlaundry load in the Cottonsprogramme or in the Minimum ironprogramme.

– The temperature selected does notexceed 60°C.

– The final spin speed selected mustnot be lower than 600 rpm.

– CapDosing (, ) has not beenselected for the main wash.

With some options (e.g. Pre-wash,Water plus) PowerWash 2.0 is notactivated.

Special features

– Drenching phaseThe washing machine will spin a fewtimes at the beginning of theprogramme. During spinning, thewater discharged is sprayed backinto the laundry in order to achieveoptimum moisture penetration.

The optimum water level is set at theend of the drenching phase. Ifnecessary, the washing machine willpump water away and take in a littlemore fresh water.

– Noises during the heating phaseUnusual bubbling noises can occurwhile the laundry and the drum arebeing heated.

– DetergentDispense the correct amount ofdetergent (with smaller loads). For optimum detergent application, use the TwinDos function.

Detergent

61

The correct detergentAll detergents produced for automaticfront loading washing machines aresuitable. Follow the manufacturer'sinstructions and dosagerecommendations on the packaging.

The right amount to dispensewill depend on the following:– The soiling level of the laundry.

– The quantity of laundry.

– The water hardness level. Check withyour local water authority if you donot know the water hardness level inyour area.

Detergent dispensing aidsUse dispensing aids (e.g. balls) if theseare supplied with the detergent, particularly when using liquid detergent.

Refill packs of detergentWhen purchasing detergent, buy refillpacks wherever possible. This helpsreduce the amount of waste packaging.

Fabric softeners and liquidstarchFabric softeners make garments soft to handle and helpprevent static cling when tumble drying.

Fabric shapers are synthetic starches and give an evenstiffer hold.

Starch stiffens and gives body to items oflaundry, e.g. shirts, tablecloths and bedlinen.

An unsatisfactory wash result

Problem Possible cause and remedy

Liquid detergent doesnot give the requiredresult.

Liquid detergents usually contain no bleachingagents. They do not remove fruit, coffee and teastains. Use the Miele 2 Phase System. The targeted

addition of UltraPhase 2 during the wash processremoves stains effectively.

Use a general purpose powder detergentcontaining a bleaching agent.

Grey, greasy particlescling to washed laundry.

Insufficient amounts of detergent were used to breakdown the particles of grease in heavily soiled laundry. Use more detergent or liquid detergent. Before washing the next load, run the Clean

machine programme using the Miele IntenseCleanwashing machine cleaner or a powder detergent.

White residues whichlook like powderdetergent are seen ondark textiles afterwashing.

The detergent contained compounds (zeolites) to aidwater softening which are not soluble in water. Thesehave ended up on the laundry. Try and brush off the residues with a soft brush

once the laundry is dry. Wash dark textiles using a detergent which does

not contain zeolites. Liquid detergents usually donot contain zeolites.

Use the Dark garments programme.

Installation surfaceA concrete floor is the most suitableinstallation surface for a washingmachine, being far less prone tovibration during the spin cycle thanwooden floorboards or a carpetedsurface.

Please note:

The machine must be level andsecurely positioned.

To avoid vibrations during spinning, the machine should not be installedon soft floor coverings.

If installing on a wooden joist floor:

We recommend a plywood base (atleast 59 x 52 x 3 cm). The baseshould span several joists and bebolted to the joists and not only to thefloorboards. Check for the presenceof pipes and cables first.

Useful tip: If possible, install themachine in a corner, as this is usuallythe most stable part of the floor.

Transporting the washingmachine to its installation site

Make sure the fixings at the backof the lid are secure.Otherwise there is a danger of the lidbeing pulled off when carrying theappliance. Before carrying the appliance, checkthat the lid is secure where itprotrudes at the back of theappliance.

Carry the washing machine by thefront feet and the protruding lid at theback.

Removing the transit bars

Remove the left and right covers.

1. Pull off the transit bar covers and

2. then use a screwdriver to release thecatches at the top and bottom.

87

To avoid the risk of injury, theholes for the transit bars must becovered after the transit bars havebeen removed.

Fit the covers onto the two holes.

Secure the transit bars to the back ofthe washing machine. Make sure thetop catch is located above the holder.

The washing machine must notbe moved without the transit bars inplace. Store them as shown or keepthem in a safe place for future use. They must be refitted if the machineis to be moved again (e.g. whenmoving house).

Refitting the transit barsRefitting is carried out by reversing theprocedure.

b Double-skinned inlet hose

c Sump

d Float switch

e Electronic unit

f Drain pump

The inlet hoses

– The casing on the inlet hosescontains two solenoid valves ,which cut off the water intake directlyat the tap. These valves provide two-fold protection. In the event that oneof the valves is faulty, the other valvewill cut off the water intake.Blocking the water intake at the tapmeans that the inlet hoses are onlyunder pressure whilst water is beingtaken into the machine. For theremainder of the time, pressure onthe inlet hoses is negligible.

– Protection against the solenoidvalves bursting. The solenoid valves are pressuretested to between 7000 kPa and10000 kPa against bursting.

– The double-skinned inlet hoses have a pressure-resistant inner hoseand a protective sleeve. Any leakingwater is fed into the sump throughthis protective sleeve. A float switch closes the solenoid valves, preventing any more water flowinginto the machine and water in thesuds container is pumped away.

Page 91: Operating instructions Washing machine - Miele

91

The electronic unit and drainageand overflow protection

– Drainage protectionAny leaking water is collected in thesump in the base of the machine.A float switch closes the solenoidvalves , preventing any more waterfrom flowing into the machine andwater in the suds container ispumped away.

– Overflow protectionIf the water level exceeds a certainlevel, the drain pump switches inand pumps the excess water away ina controlled manner.Should the water level rise repeatedlyin an uncontrolled way, the drainpump will switch on continuously, the washing machine will indicatethat there is a fault and a tone willsound.

Drain hose

The drain hose is protected by aventilation system which prevents thewashing machine from being emptiedcompletely.

Connection to the water supplyIMPORTANT Australia and NewZealand

This appliance must be installedaccording to AS/NZS 3500.1. Backflowprevention is already integrated in theappliance.

The safety valves containelectrical components. They mustnot be connected in areas wherethere is the risk of water or otherliquids reaching them, e.gbathrooms.

The safety valves must not get wet.

The protective sleeve of the hosemust not be damaged or kinked.

The washing machine should beconnected to a mains water supply inaccordance with current local andnational safety regulations.

The machine is designed to operatewith a flow pressure of between 100and 1000 kPa. If it is higher than 1000kPa, it is essential to fit a reducer valve.

Connection to the water supply shouldincorporate taps with a ¾“ threadedunion. The taps should be fitted by aqualified plumber.

The connection points aresubject to mains water pressure.Turn on the taps slowly and checkfor leaks. Correct the position of thewasher and the union if appropriate.

Maintenance and care

Only use a Miele Waterproof systemhose should you need a replacement.

The union nut on the casing atthe end of the water inlet hosecontains a dirt filter which protectsthe solenoid valves. This dirt filter must not be removed.

This washing machine can be operatedwith cold mains water and/or hot water.

Markings of water intake hoses

Cold water (tapwater)

= Silver label

Hot water = Red label

For technical reasons, thewashing machine must always beconnected to cold mains water.

Cold water (tap water)

The washing machine is programmed tocold water operation at the factory.

The other water intake hose can befixed at the back of the appliance.

Hot water

– If you wish to use a hot waterconnection with the washingmachine, it must be reprogrammedas described in “Settings - Waterintake”.

– The temperature of hot water at themains water tap must not exceed60°C. The preferred temperature is55°C. Consult a plumber if thetemperature at the tap exceeds 60°C.

– Before connecting to the mains watertap, check that the outflow of coldwater does not exceed 5 litres. Eachadditional litre of cold water reducesthe energy efficiency.

– If the hot water tap is turned off forsome time, the washing machine willautomatically switch to the coldwater connection. This safetymeasure is not intended for thepermanent operation of theappliance. The washing machinecontinues to wash using hot wateroperation, but washing results areworsened.

– If the programmed temperature whenHot water MW + rinses is selected istoo low, the washing machineautomatically switches to cold wateroperation. In a programme withoutExtra options and without a part load, two rinses with an increased waterlevel are carried out to achieve agood rinsing result.

DrainageThe suds are drained through a drainpump with a 1 m delivery head. For thewater to drain freely, the hose must beinstalled free of kinks. The elbow piecesupplied hooks onto the end of thehose. If required, the hose can be extended toa length of up to 5 m. The necessaryparts can be ordered from Miele.

For a delivery head of more than 1 m(up to a max. of 1.8 m) a replacementdrain pump will need to be fitted. Please contact Miele for advice. If required, the hose can be extended toa length of up to 2.5 m. The necessaryparts can be ordered from Miele.

Drain hose connection:

1. Directed into a sink or basin:

Please note:

– Hook the hose over the edge andsecure it.

– If the water is pumped into awashbasin, make sure that it candrain away freely. Otherwise thereis a risk of water overflowing or ofsome of the drained water beingsucked back into the machine.

2. Connected securely to a plastic drainpipe with a rubber nipple (there is noneed to use a siphon).

3. Connected securely to a floor gully.

4. Connected securely to a washbasinwith a plastic nipple.

Consumption data

101

Consumption data can vary from the nominal values given depending on waterpressure, water hardness, water inlet temperature, room temperature, type andvolume of load, fluctuations in the electricity supply and any options selected.

With the PowerWash 2.0 washing technique, during the heating phase, thetemperature measured by the sensor in the suds container is higher than theactual temperature of the laundry. The temperature measured there does not reflect the temperature of thelaundry.

The consumption data shown in the EcoFeedback display can vary from theconsumption data quoted here. The variations arise from component tolerancesand on-site conditions e.g. fluctuations in the pressure of the water supply, mains voltage and fluctuations in the mains voltage.
