The US Department of Transportation identifies the following driving forces that currently

influence and continue to change the intermodal industry landscape:

Growth » Increase in Freight Traffic

Trucking and rail industries are currently responsible

for 66.8% of the value of all US shipments, and the

number of imports and exports are projected to double

over the next 30 years.

Safety » Focus on Safe Productivity

Recent trends show improvement and focus on freight

safety and security. Despite a 27% increase in freight-

ton miles for all surface modes between 1990 and

2011, freight-related fatalities declined by 33%.
