INTRODUCTIONThank you for purchasing STAIR CHAIR, BARTELS POWERED STAIR CLIMBER. This manual describes proper operating procedure, inspection and maintenance. Before running the machine, be sure to read this manual thoroughly. Please keep this manual in the same, easily accessible place. All machines are referred to by their serial numbers. Whenever you inquire about a machine, be sure to inform us of its serial number. The serial number is inscribed an the side of the machine. Please record its number and year, month and date of purchase in the operation manual.

When you inquire about the machine, please inform us of its serial number and purchase date.

• STAIR CHAIR is a powered stair climber for transferring an aged or a handicapped passenger who cannot walk up/down the stairs.

• STAIR CHAIR is designed to carry one passenger. Never carry a baby in the arms, have a child an the passengefs lap or carry any similar load while using STAIR CHAIR even when the total weight does not exceed STAIR CHAIR‘s maximum load. Unprescribed usage is dangerous. Only one passenger can use STAIR CHAIR while Seat Belt is fastened.

• The operator must call out to the passenger to inform him/her the next action with simple words in order to reduce passenger‘s anxiety before the operator moves STAIR CHAIR to the next phase of the procedure. (Pay special attention to reducing passenger anxiety before and during STAIR CHAIR‘s ascent/descent of the stairs.)

1. ESSENTIALS OF SAFE OPERATION

Before using STAIR CHAIR

STAIR CHAIR cannot be used on spiral staircases, curved staircases, and staircase angles exceeding 35 degrees, stairs with larger pitch or stairs with rough edges.

2. Handling of Battery• Battery is a sealed type. It is unnecessary to refill it

with water. Never dismantle Battery.

• Never position Battery near a flame or short-circuitBattery.

• If Battery is cracked and its electrolytic solutioncontacts skin or clothes, immediately rinsethe contaminated area with plenty of water. Ifelectrolytic solution splashes into the eye, rinsethe eye with plenty of clean water and consult anophthalmologist.

• Use special Battery Charger for charging Battery.

3. Safe Operation with proper knowledge

• The Operator needs sufficient training. Be sure thetraining is undertaken before the operator attemptsto run this machine for the first time.

• Proper clothes, suitable to machine control, must beworn.

• Before seating or unseating the passenger on/fromSTAIR CHAIR, be sure to extend Kick Stand tosecure STAIR CHAIR.

• After the passenger is seated on STAIR CHAIR,firmly secure the passenger with Belt.

• Wear normal shoes or sport-type shoes.Never operate the machine while wearing noopen heeled shoes such as slippers, sandals orequivalents.

• No operator overworked, sick, taking medicine,intoxicated, or otherwise inhibited may operateSTAIR CHAIR

4. Operation on a staircase

• Never run the machine on a staircase exceeding35 degrees angle, on a curved staircase, anoily staircase, an icy staircase, a wet or slipperystaircase or any other inappropriate staircase.

• Obliquely ascending or descending the stairs willresult in danger of serious accident. The operatormust avoid oblique Operation on stairs. Alwaysapproach the staircase squarely.

• Whenever running the machine upward, the operatormust always pay attention to the area behind him/herself. Do not run STAIR CHAIR if the stairs arecrowded.

• Whenever running the machine downward, theoperator must always pay attention to the frontof the machine. Do not run STAIR CHAIR if thestaircase are crowded.

• Never let go of the machine unless unavoidablecircumstances separate the operator from themachine.

5. Machine stoppage

• If the machine gives trouble, malfunctions or isdamaged, immediately stop operating the machine.Running it with a trouble cause existing can result ina serious accident.

4. DESCRIPTION OF EACH UNIT4.1 ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE

1. Press Lock Release Lever above OperationBox while supporting Back Support Frameand pull Back Support Frame slightly to theoperator‘s side.

2. When the lock is released, let go of LockRelease Lever and pull Back Support Framecompletely until the dick sound is heardwhen Lock Unit latehes against Lock Pin.Back Support Frame setting is completed ifit cannot be moved to its stored direction.

Lock Release Level

Unlatched operation is very dangerous. Before operating the machine, be sure to confi rm that Lock Unit securely supports Back Support Frame.

Never operate Lock Pin latch/release Operation while the passenger is on STAIR CHAIR. Doing so may cause injury to the passenger. Do not let children operate STAIR CHAIR. lt will result in danger.

4.2 FOLDING PROCEDURE

1. Grasp two Lock Pins at the rear of Seat andslide them frontward a little.

2. After the locks are released, let Lock Pinsgo, hold Back Support Frame then slide andpush Back Support Frame to frontward.Fold Back Support Frame until the Operatorhears the latching „click“ sound. Check thatLock Release Lever is completely latched.

While Back Support Frame is folded, and alter Back Support Frame‘s sliding movement is started, be sure not to touch Lock Pins. lf Lock Pins are held, there will be danger of the hands being caught in Frame.

4.3 SWITCHES

1. Key SwitchIt turns on/off the power supply. When it isturned clockwise, the power will be ON andwhen turned counter-clockwise, the powerwill be off.

NOTE: When STAIR CHAIR is not to be used (to be stored, to be charged, to be transported), turn off Key Switch, remove Key and keep it in an appointed place.

2. UP/DOWN SwitchSelects ascent or descent mode. Only whilethis Switch is pressed, does the machinerun. If UP Seesaw is pressed, the machinewill astend. If DOWN Seesaw is pressed,the machine will descend. When the fingeris released, Switch will automatically returnits neutral position and the machine willstop.

3. Emergency Stop SwitchWhen this Switch is pressed, the machinewill stop immediately. STAIR CHAIR won‘trestart even if the other Switch is pressed.To release the emergency stop condition,turn Emergency Stop Switch clockwise (inthe „arrow“ indicated direction).

4.4 KICK STANDThis Stand prevents STAIR CHAIR toppling backward while the passenger is being seated/unseated from STAIR CHAIR. In order to prevent an accident, UP/ DOWN Switch won‘t function while Stand is extended.

Before using STAIR CHAIR, be sure to retract Kick Stand.

Before seating the passenger an STAIR CHAIR, be sure to extend Kick Stand in order to prevent a fall, which might result in an injury to the back of the passenger‘s head.

lf Key Switch is kept in the ON position, Battery will more quickly discharge. When the machine is not to be in use, be sure to turn off Key Switch and remove Key.

4.5 BATTERY PACK REMOVAL / INSTALLATION

1. Keep Battery Pack‘s Handle and raise it.

2. Pull Battery Pack out while keeping it raised

3. When reinstalling Battery Pack, follow thereverse procedure. When inserting BatteryPack, push it firmly.

• If Battery Pack is reverse inserted, it may be damaged.Be sure to insert Battery Pack with the correct verticalorientation.

• Dropping Battery Pack may damage it. Pay attention inhandling Battery.

4.7 STAIR GAUGE HANDLING PROCEDURE

1. Detach Stair Gauge from the left side ofFrame.

1.1 Slide Stair Gauge to the right until its detaching hole reaches Latching Pin.

1.2 Pull Stair Gauge and remove it from STAIR CHAIR.

2. Set Stair Gauge against the edge of theneighboring stair. Observe Pointer position.If Pointer settles within Green Color Range,it is possible to use STAIR CHAIR.Neveruse STAIR CHAIR on a stair if Pointersettles within Red Color Range. After themeasurement is completed, be sure toreturn Stair Gauge to its original position onSTAIR CHAIR.

NOTE: If the customer loses Stair Gauge, they must immediately order a replacement form the agency where purchased.

5. BATTERY CHARGE SYSTEM5.1 BATTERY

A Sealed Lead Battery is used in STAIR CHAIR. It is a maintenance-free and non water requiring Battery. Whenever Battery- is handled, be sure to follow the cautions shown below.

NOTE: Immediately after Battery is used, Battery must be charged using special Battery Charger, If insufficient battery charge is left, less power for following operations will result in difficulty of operation. Or if Battery is left depleted for a long period of time, it may be damaged.

A special Battery Charger is used for STAIR CHAIR. Battery is automatically charged depending an battery discharge rate at a given time.This Battery Charger is not equipped with a timer function. When battery reaches its fully charged level (Charger‘s Green LED will illurninate), Battery will continue to be charged with trickle current (0.1 to 0.2A).Be sure to disconnect Charger‘s Plug from Battery Pack after Green LED illuminates.(Charging Battery completely will take 8 hours.)

5.2 CHARGER

• Never charge Battery in a closed room.• Never bring Battery near a fl ame.• Never disassemble Battery.• Never connect Battery Terminals with tools or metals.

• Use special Battery Charger for charging Battery.• Always check Battery‘s condition. lt any crack er deformation

er water leakage is observed, replace with a new one.• Clean and wipe Battery with a cool or warm water moistened

cloth. Never wipe with gasoline, thinner, organic solvent or oilmoistened cloth.

• If the electrolytic liquid from a damaged Battery contacts skinor clothes, rinse the area with plenty of water immediately. Ifthe electrolytic liquid invades the operator‘s eye, rinse it withclean water immediately and consult an ophthalmologist.

• Battery is a sealed type. Never remove its cover. lt the coveris removed, Battery will become unusable.

• Battery may lose its usefulness if it is over discharged.• If Battery is not to be used for a long period of time. remove

it from the machine and charge it completely. Keep it in cooland dry place and charge it again monthly.Even though Battery is not used during storage, its capacityconstantly decreases. Therefore its performance will decreasecompared with the previous occasion the machine was used.

5.3 CHARGING PROCEDURE

1.1 If Battery Pack is not to be removed from STAIR CHAIR, connect Charger‘s Plug to Charging Receptacle positioned at the side of Operation Box.

1.2 If Battery Pack is removed, connect Charger‘s Plug to Battery Pack‘s Receptacle.

2. Connect AC Adapter to outlet (AC 100 to240V) and connect Power Plug.

3. When Power Plug is inserted, the chargingprocess immediately starts. The chargingprogress is indicated by LED‘s colors.

Red . . . Power is supplied.Orange . Charging.Green . . Fully charged.

NOTE: To confirm a fully charged Battery Pack, be sure to check it via Charger‘s full charge indication (green illuminated LED) Do not check via Battery Gauge indication. Battery Gauge indication does not accurately correspond to the actual battery capacity.

4. When charging is completed, disconnectPower Plug from the outlet and disconnectCharger‘s Plug from Battery Pack‘sReceptacle.

5.4 BATTERY REPLACEMENT

2. Disconnect cables from Battery Terminals,remove exhausted Batteries, and install newones.

3. Connect cables to Battery Terminals asshown in the figure. Confirm that cables areproperly connected to the proper terminals.Then apply adhesive agent to Connectorsto prevent their loosening.

• This Charger is not equipped with a timer function. WhenGreen LED Illuminates, disconnect Charger‘s Plug fromBattery Pack‘s socket.

• Charge Battery in an ambient temperature between 5 and40°C.If Battery is charged in an ambient temperature lower than5°C, it may not charge fully.

CAUTION

While Key Switch is set to ON, power will be supplied from Battery. If STAIR CHAIR is not be used, be sure to set Key to OFF and remove it from Key Switch.

5.5 MALFUNCTION, INSPECTION, RESOLUTION PROCEDURE

• For safe handling of Charger, be sure to read the instructionsthoroughly before using Charger.

• Charger is only to be used with an AC100-240V powersource. Never connect Power Cable to any other powersource specification.

• Be sure to finish trickle charging within 12 hours after batterycharging process is completed. Extended charging mayreduce battery capacity re¬sulting in shorter battery life.

• Battery and Charger‘s Output Terminals have polarity. Confirmthat those Terminals are correctly connected according theirpolarity. Improper connection will result in a short circuit andcause a cable to melt or other serious charger malfunction.

• Never remove Charger Cover or you will risk receiving anelectric shock.

• Keep Charger indoors, away from direct sunlight and watersplashes. Neglecting this can cause fire, electric shock orequipment malfunction.

• As Battery deteriorates, its voltage will fail to reach normalfull-charge voltage.

7. OPERATION7.1 SEAT THE PASSENGER IN STAIR CHAIR

1. Turn on Key Switch.

2. Open Kick Stand to prevent the passengerfalling down whenever he/she transfer to/from STAIR CHAIR.

3. After the passenger is seated on STAIRCHAIR, be sure to hold the passenger‘sbody and leg belts. Then close Kick Standholding handle by both hands.

NOTE: If Kick Stand is not retracted, UP/DOWN Switch will not function and STAIR CHAIR will not ascend/descend the stairs.

4. While transferring STAIR CHAIR on a flatfloor, the operator must hold STAIR CHAIR‘sHandle with both hands, tilt STAIR CHAIRa little and run STAIR CHAIR on its wheels.Do not use its rubber crawlers.

NOTE: If for some emergency the operator must leave STAIR CHAIR while passenger transport is in progress, he/she must set Kick Stand and check that conditions are safe before leaving STAIR CHAIR.

7.2 ASCENDING STAIRS

1. Position STAIR CHAIR at the foot of thestairs:Bring STAIR CHAIR to the foot of the stairs,turn it backward and set squarely at the footof the stairs.

2. Starting ascend operation:Press the upper side of UP/DOWN Switchto ascend while supporting STAIR CHAIR toprevent it from overturning on the stair.

NOTE: Be sure to hold Handle securely until Rubber Crawlers contact the third step.

• If the left and right Rubber Crawlers do not meet the stairsimultaneously, STAIR CHAIR will climb the stairs askew. Thisis a highly risky situation.

• The operator must hold Handle with both hands the wholetime STAIR CHAIR is on stairs or landings.

• While STAIR CHAIR runs on the stairs, the operator must bepositioned upward of STAIR CHAIR. Improper supporting ofSTAIR CHAIR may cause a loss of balance and overturning orother serious accident.

3. Stopping STAIR CHAIR in the middle of thestairs:Once the finger is released from Switch,Electromagnetic Brake will functionimmediately and STAIR CHAIR willimmediately stop. Because lugs rest an thestair‘s corners, STAIR CHAIR will not slidedown the stairs.

Keep Rubber Crawler contact points as broad as possible. lt is dangerous for the passenger‘s center of gravity to overhang STAIR CHAIR‘s stair-contacting points.

4. STAIR CHAIR reaches the top of thestairs:

4.1 When STAIR CHAIR reaches a landing or, the top of the stairs, be sure to stop STAIR CHAIR for a moment when its Stop Mark reaches the top stair level.

NOTE: Stop Mark is only an approximate point. The stop position will vary according to the passenger‘s dimensions/weight and stair angle.

4.2 After STAIR CHAIR is temporarily stopped, tilt Handle slowly toward the operator. STAIR CHAIR‘s Wheels will contact the floor. After Wheels contact is confirmed, press the upper side of UP/DOWN Switch and back up until no part of STAIR CHAIR extends over the stairs.

7.3 SWIVEL AT LANDING AREA

When STAIR CHAIR is to be swiveled in a small area, fi rst operator stands at the side of STAIR CHAIR and swivels STAIR CHAIR. using a Wheel as a fulcrum.

lf STAIR CHAIR is not stopped at its stop position and UP Switch is kept pressed, STAIR CHAIR will suddenly tilt toward horizontal. This will be dangerous.

7.4 DESCENDING STAIRS

1. Starting descend operation:When STAIR CHAIR‘s Stop Mark reachesthe edge of the top stair, stop STAIR CHAIRfor a moment. Set STAIR CHAIR square tothe stairs.

2. When STAIR CHAIR is stopped, tilt Handleslowly until the top of STAIR CHAIRtouches the edge of the second stair.

3. When Rubber Crawlers contact the lowerstair and STAIR CHAIR becomes stable,press the lower side of UP/DOWN Switch.

4. STAIR CHAIR reaches the bottom of thestairs:Keep pressing DOWN Switch until STAIRCHAIR reaches the bottom of the stairs.STAIR CHAIR will automatically transfer tohorizontal running. Release DOWN Switchand wheel STAIR CHAIR to a safe area.

Because Operation Switches are positioned behind the passenger and the Operator controls STAIR CHAIR from the rear of the passenger, an unaccustomed passenger may feel anxiety. As the Operator operates STAR CHAIR, he/she must describe the operation in a clear voice at the following times:1. Before seating or unseating the passenger to/from STAIR

CHAIR.2. Before fastening Belts.3. Before pressing UP/DOWN Switch.4. Before STAIR CHAIR starts ascending/descending the stairs.5. Before tilting STAIR CHAIR to bring its Wheels to the fl oor

after it reaches its Stop Mark.6. Before changing STAIR CHAIR‘s direction.7. Before unfastening Belts to unseat the passenger from

STAIR CHAIR.

8. RUBBER CRAWLERS ADJUSTMENT

1. Rubber Crawler tension adjustment:Loosen Adjustment Bolt‘s Nut and slideTension Rod to adjust Rubber Crawler‘stension. When Adjustment Bolt turnsclockwise, the tension will increase. Adjustboth Rubber Crawlers to be the sametension. After the tension adjustment iscompleted, retighten Nut firmly.

2. Rubber Crawler pitch error correction:Loosen Rubber Crawler following the sameprocedure in 8-(1). Shift one of RubberCrawlers and mate each Lettered Mark tothe same position. Pitch error may causeinstability while STAIR CHAIR runs on thestairs. After completion of adjustment, besure to retighten Nuts firmly.

9. DAILY MAINTENANCE AND CARE

9.1 BATTERY

• When STAIR CHAIR is not to be used or its Battery Pack is to be charged, turn off Key Switchand remove Key. If Key Switch is kept in the ON position, Battery will quickly discharge and itmay not have capacity to run STAIR CHAIR the following day.

• After the end of operation or before storing it, be sure to charge Battery using special Charger.(Because it requires a long charging time, if it is not charged enough, it will be difficult tooperate the following day.)

• When storing STAIR CHAIR for a long period of time, maintain its Battery in a fully chargedstate. Not doing so will result in an extremely short life. (Even if Battery is already fullycharged, recharge Battery again monthly.)

9.2 RUBBER CRAWLERS• If oil adheres, immediately wipe it off completely.• Check there is no crack or wear concerning Rubber Crawlers. If any defect an Rubber Crawler

is observed, stop STAIR CHAIR immediately and replace the part with a new one.

10. TERMS OF GUARANTEEThe activated guarantee is for a period of two years, apart from batteries and rubber parts. It is limited to complaint parts free of charge excluding freight, cost for labor or travelling expenses.

We suggest to make maintenance once a year by authorized agent to avoid guarantee obliga-tions.

11. REUTILISATIONThe STAIR CHAIR is suitable for reutilisation as long as possible safety-related precautionary measures are no longer applicable or other regulations apply. Clean and disinfect the unit in accordance with Point 9 prior to reutilisation. An inspection must be carried out by an authorised dealer prior to reutilisation.

9.3 MISCELLANEOUS

• Clean frame sections with a brush.• Clean hand grips with a commercially available spray disinfectant.
