DescriptionThe
SR
L2 uses
infrared optics
to create
aportable refrigerant leak detector technology thathas a superior com
bination of sensitivity, speed, sensor life, battery life, portability, and ease of use.
Gas is pum
ped through the tip of the wand into
the sensor
within
the S
RL2
body. The
sensordetects changes in concentration, not absolute con-centration, m
aking it easy to detect leaks even inareas w
ith refrigerant in the air. The S
RL2 detects leaks as sm
all as 0.1 oz/year,w
hich exceeds the toughest SA
E J1627 standards.
The SR
L2 comes w
ith wall and car chargers for its
ultra-compact Li-ion polym
er battery which pow
ersthe S
RL2 for 8hrs of continuous operation before a
recharge is needed. That’s long enough to last yourentire w
orkday.U
nlike many leak detectors, oil vapor does not
trigger the SR
L2.The S
RL2 has vari-
able sensitivity
set-tings,
keeping ‘nui-
sance tripping’

quick andautom
atic 30 second self-calibration upon power-up
ensures optimal perform
ance. Abuilt in replaceable
filter blocks moisture and harm
ful particulates. TheS
RL2 also has a m
ute button and a peak hold func-tion.

Leak Detection Procedure
Keep the S
RL2 aw
ay from any areas of potential
refrigerant leakage until the warm
-up and calibrationperiod
is over.
The w
arm-up
and calibration
sequence lasts about 30 seconds after ON
/OFF is
pressed. On startup, m
eter defaults to high sensitiv-ity.The m
ost likely points for refrigerant leaks are atthe soldered joints in refrigerant lines and changesin cross section or direction of these lines.
The SR
L2 detects changesin concentration of
refrigerant, not the absolute concentration of refrig-erant. This lets the user easily detect leaks in placesthat m
ay have refrigerant in the air, such as a refrig-erator leaking into an enclosed space. B
ecause theS
RL2 detects change, there is a specific “double-
pass” method used to find leaks.
1. The tip of the wand should be fairly close to the
line. You may need to be w
ithin 1/4” of a small
leak to detect it. In this case, using a secondhand to guide the tip along refrigerant lines m
aybe helpful.
2. Keep the tip m
oving along refrigerant lines at arate of 1-3 inches per second.
3. Once the S
RL2 indicates a change in concentra-
tion, note the spot on the line and keep the tipm
oving past the potential leak to refresh the airspace w
ithin the SR
L2 with clean air. (N
ote: Ifthe S
RL2 w
and moves through a very high con-
centration of refrigerant, you may need to use in
fresh air for 4 seconds before moving to step 4
in order to clear the refrigerant within the S
RL2.)
4. Return the tip back to, and past, the spot first
indicated. When the S
RL2 indicates a second
change, note the spot on the line. The source ofthe leak w
ill be near the midpoint betw
een thetw
o noted spots of indication. 5. Very high concentrations of refrigerant can
cause an overload which can take a few
sec-onds to clear.

Lithium
Battery C
areThe S
RL2 contains a very pow
erful two-cell lithi-
um ion polym
er battery. For a long battery life andsafe operation you m
ust observe the following:
Cautions
1. Charge only w
hile battery is inside the SR
L2w
ith a Fieldpiece supplied charger. Do not
charge externally. 2. D
o not expose the battery to temperatures high-
er than 140ºF. 3. D
o not charge the battery in or nearby heatedplaces, such as fire, hot vehicles, or direct sun-light.
4. Do not directly connect the battery to any bat-
tery charger. The included chargers connect tothe S
RL2, not the S
RL2 battery.
5. Do not solder directly on battery.
6. Do not use the battery for unspecified equip-
ment.
7. Do not expose the battery to direct im
pact orthrow
it. If the protection circuit on the battery isbroken, do not continue to use the battery.
8. Do not get the battery w
et.9. D
o not deform or pierce the battery in any w
ay. 10. If there is any battery leakage, do not touch
the battery. In the case that electrolyte gets intothe eyes, flush w
ith fresh water, do not rub, and
see a physician imm
ediately. 11. S
end in for replacement im
mediately if there is
any deformity, bad sm
ell, color change, or otherabnorm
ality.12. D
o not dissassemble or try to repair battery or
protective circuitry.13.The battery is technician-replaceable and m
ustbe sent to Fieldpiece Instrum
entsif a replace-
ment is needed. It is not user-replaceable.
ChargingTw
o chargers are included with the S
RL2. The
AC
charger plugs into a wall outlet (110-120 VA
C,
60Hz) and the car charger plugs into a car cigarette
lighter DC
plug.1. The battery is partially charged w
hen packaged.Fully charge the battery before first use.
2. The LOW
-BATT
LED
will light red w
hen the bat-tery is low
. 3. To recharge the S
RL2, plug one end of the
charger into the top of the SR
L2 and the otherinto the pow
er source. LOW
-BATT
will blink
while charging until the battery is fully charged.
When the S
RL2 battery is fully charged, LO
W-
BATT
turns off. 4. C
harge within operating environm
ent specifiedin the Specifications section in this m
anual. 5. Avoid frequent full discharges. S
everal partialdischarges w
ith frequent recharges are betterfor lithium
-ion batteries. Unlike nickel-based bat-
teries they have no charge mem
ory, and do notneed to be discharged before charging.
StorageThe battery should have a 40%
-50% charge dur-
ing prolonged storage of a month or longer. S
eeSpecifications section in this m
anual for proper stor-age environm
ent. B
attery life is dramatically reduced if the battery
is stored fully charged and/or at high temperatures.
Carrying C
ase W
hile both chargers fit in the included case, thecarrying case is intended to carry the leak detectoralone. M
ost users leave the chargers near thepow
er supply and carry around just the meter.
Larger cases, to hold both chargers plus extraaccessories, are available such as the A
NC
8 (seeO
ptional Accessories).
FilterAssessm
ent & R
eplacement
The filter blocks moisture and other contam
inantsfrom
the sensor. When it gets w
et, it constricts flowof air and it w
ill have to be replaced.Unscrew
thesensor tip and replace the w
hite filter so that therounded end is closest to the tip of the w
and. Use
only the Fieldpiece supplied filter. E
xtra bags of replacement parts (m
odel RFL2)
are available from Fieldpiece w
hich contain 10filters and 5 O
-rings.
