Popularity and Relevance of Science Education and scientific Literacy

Project Goal• Noting trends related to the thrust for scientific and

technological literacy and a better appreciation of the nature of science and cognitive, personal and social gains needed,

• the project sets out to identify teaching materials that bring practices by teachers in school closer to the advances put forward in the literature i.e. link ‘theory’ and ‘practice’.

Page 3: OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES Ensuring Ownership of PARSEL by Partners

The project will:

• create a network community from those working in the field of developing teaching/learning materials;

• assemble notions of ‘best practice’ from the diversity of considerations by partners;

• develop a model encompasses the range of philosophical consideration and approaches that lend themselves to a general develop of ‘best practice’ materials;

• modify existing exemplars to reflect the model;

and

Page 4: OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES Ensuring Ownership of PARSEL by Partners

Also, the project will: • translate exemplar materials, • test and disseminate these to teachers and other

stakeholders; • take steps to meet the need for teachers to take

ownership of the model through adaptation of exemplars;

• evaluate the impact of the examplars on teacher ownership of the model and student interest.

Specific Operational Objectives of the Project1. Collecting teaching materials and resources relevant to the project.2. Classifying the collected materials based on intended use.3. Developing a model for relevant science teaching/learning based on

the materials/resources. 4. Modifying collected materials/resources based on the model.5. Translating exemplar materials and/or resources appropriate for the

local situation.6. Involving a group of teachers in taking ownership of the model by

testing exemplar materials. 7. Initiating and monitoring the testing of translated exemplar materials/

resources in the school situation.8. Using instruments for determining outcomes from testing of

materials.9. Evaluating materials for relevant teaching based on testing

outcomes.10. Disseminating materials and evaluation outcomes to teachers and

other stakeholders nationally, across Europe and beyond.

Page 6: OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES Ensuring Ownership of PARSEL by Partners

and to do this through1. Developing a shared strategy between partners.2. Mobilising and co-ordinating financial provision throughout the

network. 3. Effective planning and co-ordination, in collaboration with teachers,

teacher educators, scientists and industry. 4. Fundraising and publicity.5. Coordinating meetings on the theme of the project.6. Ensuring inter-regional co-ordination and communication of ideas

and developments.7. Providing an opportunity to determine the nature and scope of

progress.8. Creating opportunities for collaboration and partnership between

project partners.9. Providing diagnostic feedback to guide the project during the lifetime

of the project.10. Providing a summative report that provides indicators regarding the

success of the project.11. Providing recommendations for further development.

WORKSHOPS (linked to meetings)Each workshop has a specific theme. Themes can centre on:

Workshop 1 (month 2) - ensuring ownership of project by members; sharing existing ideas and materials developed related to more relevant science teaching. Workshop 2 (month 7) - formulating a model reflecting the variety of approaches to relevant science teaching. Workshop 3 (month 12) - plans for translation and evaluating (testing) in selected schools.Workshop 4 (month 16) - dissemination of the model and material within each member country.Workshop 5 (month 21) - review of the project and further actions needed.Workshop 6 (month 25) - outcomes from the national/wider dissemination plans.Workshop 7 (month 29) - conference on evaluation of the project gains and wider dissemination.

Page 21: OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES Ensuring Ownership of PARSEL by Partners

Website www.parsel.euThe project will set up an online resource, which will : detail philosophies, strategies and models deriving from the partners, exemplar teaching/learning materials and/or resources related to

relevance in science education.

The resources will form a major feature of the website, alongside

progress reports, articles and outcomes for workshops.

The development of combined criteria and exemplar materials will be a major feature of the website.

The website will thus be a major dissemination tool for the project and the main mechanism for sharing developments between the national testing of exemplar materials/resources and their dissemination outputs.

Page 22: OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES Ensuring Ownership of PARSEL by Partners

Publications

PARSEL publications are suggested to be: national, regional and international academic articles

on the model, and outcomes from testing exemplar materials in the

classroom, to: presentations in national/international science

education conferences.

A key document will be the proceedings of the conference (workshop 7, month 29) disseminated via the website.
