ECDIS – Race against time 01
ECDIS
• Adopted by IMO – 2009• Entered into force – 01.01.2011 – SOLAS V

Operational use of ECDISWhat we have learned• Our information is drawn from
- Navigation audits- Navigation claims involving ECDIS- Talking to mariners
• Some ECDIS features do not promote best practice- Display settings- Screen size/scale- Manual fix procedure- Buoyage and night colour schemes
• Wide variations in the skills of ‘certified’ ECDIS users
7
Operational use of ECDISWhat we have learned: continued
• Some users do not understand “how best” to use ECDIS features
• Awareness of ECDIS software maintenance requirements variable
• Companies should produce comprehensive ECDIS procedures for best results
• Navigation audits have revealed few set procedures onboard ships
Implementation of ECDIS 03
9
Implementation of ECDISControlling standards of ECDIS use
• Just like any piece of equipment ECDIS use must be controlled by SOP’s- Pre-arrival - Pre-departure
• These SOP’s should be added to checklists
• More emphasis in ISM needed when issuing DOC’s

Operational use of ECDISManual fixing on ECDIS
1. All ECDIS must be able to:- Plot manually obtained bearing and distance lines- Calculate the resulting position of own ship- Use position as origin for dead reckoning
2. These standards are vague- How long should it take to plot a fix?- How many actions by user?
3. Crucial for cross checking GNSS or if GNSS fails
4. Little evidence of this function being used onboard
5. Many crew struggle with using this function due to complexity

Operational use of ECDISSoftware maintenance1. Many mariners are not familiar with the following:
“ECDIS that is not updated for the latest version of IHO Standards may not meet the chart carriage requirements as set out in SOLAS regulation V/19.2.1.4.”
2. 31 July 2016 existing ECDIS must be compliant with new IHO standards and be aligned with publication of IEC 61174- S-52 Specifications for chart content and display aspects of ECDIS- S-63 IHO Data Protection Scheme- S-64 IHO Test Data Sets for ECDIS
3. How many mariners are aware of this dead line and its implications
