Operationally East Sussex County Council:

• Convenes bi-monthly Olympics ‘task force’ planning meetings with the Districts and Boroughs, emergency services and relevant departments.

• Coordinates operational support principally through the Economic Development and Skills Team.

• Provides technical Highways support to the District and Borough Councils on road closures and use of street furniture (lamp posts)

• Personnel and Training preparing guidance for staff wishing to attend the torch relay to ensure cover.

ESCC Communications Torch Relay communications led locally by District and Borough Councils with support from the County Council’s communications team including a dedicated section on ESCC website including:

- the route itself,- advice and information about how businesses, residents and volunteers can get involved in the Games, - a ‘Local Leaders’ page for members of the community wishing to hold Olympic events,

Plus article in the spring edition of Your County;and several items in the Virtual Schoolbag for schools and children’s service professionals.

- As the torch relay advances ESCC will be communicating:

• Road closures information• Quotes from Lead Councillors for the press• Website updates• Via ‘Your County’ (June article planned)• Internal staff communications at appropriate

Public Health Directorate• Involved in some Olympic related activity

through commissioned services e.g. allocated an additional round of health improvement grant funding targeted to Olympic legacy activity.

• Games for Life activity - working with ESCC Communications Department

• East Sussex Health Team involved in a number of Olympic activities with partners including ESCC Libraries and Information Services using the opportunity of the Olympics to encourage physical activity and promote mental wellbeing. Libraries are leading the work.

ESCC involved in international events passing through the county offering support and communications:

27 August: Beijing to London Cylce. The Fédération Française de Cyclotourisme is organising the Beijing, Paris to London 2012 cycling event, left China in March, with an intended arrival date in Newhaven 27 August.

Sur la route de Jeux’ 2nd – 9th September

‘Sur la route de Jeux’ is a group of French cyclists with varying disabilities cycling from Paris to London to watch the Paralympics. They will make their way to London via the Cuckoo trail from Newhaven Port, visiting Newhaven Tideway School to talk about the work they are doing.

Wealden Welcomes 2012 Grant-aid Scheme

£5,000 is available for the ‘Wealden Welcomes 2012 Grant-aid Scheme’; a one-off initiative through which the Council aims to support communities and businesses to plan celebrations to mark the London 2012 Torch Relay and/or London 2012 Games.

Eastbourne• A ‘welcome the torch’ event on Princes Park a

Community Live site will show live Olympic events in Princes Park including the Opening Ceremony on Friday 27 July. 

• Small stage dedicated to local musicians

• ‘Airbourne’: Eastbourne International Air show taking place from 9 - 12 August, and fireworks at the Sunday night finale.

• Welcoming the Swedish Olympic tennis team at the south coast destination for their official pre-2012 Games Training Camp

Hastings – Torch relay 17th July• Saturday, 14 July - St Leonards Festival, mix of bands and

stalls in Warrior Square.

• In Grosvenor Gardens, at the western end of the seafront, there will be community events: golf putting, bowling competitions and bike rides.

• Warrior Square, an additional community day has been organised, building on the success of the St Leonards Festival.

• A ticketed event on The Stade Open Space in Hastings Old Town.

• Wednesday through to Saturday, there will be a number of Olympic-themed sporting events and competitions throughout the Hastings and St Leonards.

Hastings so far and beyond…• Day of Dance from Across the Globe - 17 March 2012• celebration of dance forms from Olympic countries across

the globe. • Workplace Olympics. May 2012• The Active Hastings Active at Work Officer will work with

“Office Champions” at local businesses to inspire their colleagues to celebrate the build up to the Olympic Games by taking part in their own Workplace Olympics.

• Stade Open Space Saturdays – All Summer Long• Hastings will present a season of performances from May

to October, co-funded by Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts programme.

• Hastings' Olympic Torch Week will finish on Sunday, 20 July when the record breaking Hastings Pirates Day takes place. Hastings hopes to amass the highest number of pirates ever counted in one place and regain their 2010 Guinness World Record title!

Hastings

• “The Boat Project”: It's also been announced as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad, that Hastings will play host to the 30 foot yacht built out of donated wood by The Boat Project.

• Friday 6 – Sunday 8 July• The actual boat fabricated by artists Lone Twin from

pieces of wood and with stories from people from all over the South East of England will be visiting Hastings, serenaded by a two day ‘Singathon’ of Hastings’ community choirs

The Big Flag 2012 - 7 JuneAn art gallery in the sky located on Galley Hill, Bexhill.

The Big Flag 2012 project will explore the theme of identity in the year 2012, by flying a transparent flag from Galley Hill. The Big Flag project will explore cultural identity with local organisations leaving a legacy of community participation, art will be flown from this new sky gallery, celebrating and reflecting the Olympic qualities and values. It will raise people's awareness of local identity and signal this to visitors from near and far.

Rother A new group to support disabled sports people

across Hastings, Rother and Wealden is being launched with an event featuring medal winning athletes and free demonstrations at Bexhill Leisure Centre on Sunday, September 18.

• Young athletes who competed at the Special Olympics in Athens this year will be on hand to show off their gold, silver and bronze medals at the PODS 1066 launch.

• Special Olympics Hastings & Rother are part of Special Olympics Great Britain (SOGB). Running activities for children and adults with a learning disability aged 8 years and over. It provide equality of opportunity for all the athletes regardless of ability or degree of disability. The athletics group trains on Sunday mornings 10-11am at William Parker.

Support and promotion of Gold ChallengeEveryone aged 7 upwards can take part in Gold Challenge as an individual or as part of a team. Participants choose from the challenges available and raise money for one of Gold Challenge's 125 charities

adiZone - Egerton ParkThe adiZone installed in Egerton Park, Bexhill - the first in East Sussex - was funded by Rother District Council and adidas.

• FREE exercise sessions with a professional trainer are being offered this summer to show how to get the best out of the adiZone on Egerton Park, Bexhill.

• The scheme provides an outdoor gym, basketball area, football goal, tennis wall, a climbing wall and freestyle-area for street dance, martial arts and much more. The 18 station gym is aimed at older exercisers, is well used and popular with all ages.

Rother: The Cultural Olympiad

•THE 2012 BIG DANCERother Arts Development is working with Big Dance (www.bigdance2012.com). This will be taking place nationwide as part of 2012 Cultural Olympiad and Games Opening on July 7.

Sports Development has focused on Clubs on Active Rother. Grants have been linked to building capacity and encouraging people into sport in the last year. This includes putting on events or support towards capacity building of volunteers, coaches and their clubs.
