The modern smartphone market has become a lot like the PC marke

t of the early 2000s. Brands are important, but the basic nuts and bolts of devices have been democratised, so it's possible to get a really hig

hend device for not a lot, but the trade o! may "ust be the brand. #or

e often than not, a Chinese brand, but the thing is that being a Chines

e product is not a stigma anymore.

$lready most electronics are manufactured there and some of the loca

l companies are %ell funded and o!er better specs and designs than t

he big league players like &amsung for much lesser.

ppo may be an unkno%n entity in (ndia, but in China it's )uite popul

ar. (ts latest smartphone* the +ind currently o!ers the best specs fou

nd in an $ndroid smartphone. Can it -nd a space in the (ndian consum

ers heart /e -nd out.

#ost $ndroid smartphones in the market have a boring rectangular fo

rm. The +ind is no di!erent. (t's a large device %ith a .inch displa

y on the front, %hich makes it a phablet. Compared to the 1alay 3ote

4, it fares favourably. ppo has trimmed the borders on the side of the

screen to a great etent so that the phone retains a manageable footp

rint.

(nterestingly, ppo has added a light bar belo% the screen that lights

up %henever there is a noti-cation. /e found this to be a nice touch.

(t's not a very light device and neither is the thinnest out there. 3ever

theless, for a device of its si5e 67.2mm and 82 grams9, it's rather com

fortable to hold.

This is because its back has a subtle curve and has a very nice teture

d matte -nish. This makes the phone very comfortable to hold and giv

es it an edge over phones that have a glossy plastic and metal -nish,

%hich tend to slip out.

The back is also home to the 84megapiel camera, the dual:;< =ash,

the speaker and the 4,000m$h battery, %hich resides under the remo

vable back cover. The back cover is not very di!icult to remove, so pe

ople %ho cringe at the thought of removing the back plate of the phone, need not %orry.

The sides of the phone have a chrome lining tapered %ith plastic. /hil

e, this looks nicer than &amsung's fau chrome lining, in our tests %e

found this -nish to be fallible. The lining gets peeled o! very easily an

d it starts looking )uite bad. +or structural rigidness it also has a alum

inum frame.

/e found the main po%er button to be a little problematic. +or starter

s, its positioning on the left side is unorthodo and uncomfortable for

most right handers. +urthermore, it does not o!er a tactile thro%, %hi

ch means it's a little problematic to operate. This results in a situation

%here the screen does not turn on>o! easily.

The )uad?< 2,@08,AA0 piel .inch (P& display is the +ind 's cla

im to fame. (n (ndia, it's the -rst smartphone to ship %ith such a high

resolution display since the :1 14 is yet to land in (ndia.

n paper, this should be the best display %e have seen on a smartpho

ne. nfortunately, the truth is that this is not true.

es, the display looks stunning %hen ppo's beautiful %allpapers are s

ho%ed o!, or even %hen an ltra?< video is vie%ed on the phone. Bu

t, frankly, there is not a lot of content out there, %hich is optimised forthe screen.

Then the screen disappoints in terms of brightness. +or a phone, %hos

e headlining feature is its display, the brightness levels are abysmal.

es, it's not as bad the &ony phones of yesteryear, but still not great. Ph

ones like the ?TC ne6#D9 and &amsung 1alay & outclass it and bo

th these phones have a standard 80D0p resolution.

(ts colour -delity is top notch and black levels and vie%ing angles are

decent.

(t's not that the phone's screen is not pin sharp. (t's incredibly crisp %i

th 4D piels per inch 6PP(9, but then by that token even the ?TC ne

6#D9 and the &amsung 1alay & have sharp screens %ith their AA8 P

P( resolutions. AA8 PP( is already %ay beyond the Eetina moniker that

$pple championed on the iPhone A, so the resolution bump does not c

onvert to any advantage for the user in daily use.

n the contrary, %e are sure that it has a negative impact on the batte

ry life of the phone considering devices like the 1alay & and ?TC

ne 6mD9 have smaller batteries and yet they manage to outlast the +in

d .

:ike most modern smartphones, the 84megapiel rear camera is a bi

g deal for the +ind . (t is complemented by a dual:;< =ash, %hich is

pretty standard.

The )uality of the +ind camera is average at best. (n normal daylight,

it has the ability to crank out some great images, %hich are bereft of

noise and have proper eposure levels. The images can match up to a

n iPhone &.

?o%ever, such results are not possible at most times. +or macro imagi

er constant tinkering it started to give serviceable results.

(n lo%light, the camera %as very disappointing. Pictures are littered

%ith noise and general brightness of the pictures is not great %ith out

the =ash. The =ash of course has its o%n set of problems as it creates

overeposed images. That said, the camera app allo%s the user to use

the =ash as a -ll light.

$ big feature is the ltra?< image mode. (n this mode, the camera basically takes four shots in unison and stitches them together resulting

in a 0megapiel image. (n a %ay, this is the eact opposite of %hat 3

okia does %ith its PureFie% cameras. Bluntly put, it's not very useful.
