The online business simulation game that makes learning fun!

The Small Business Game is an engaging online business simulation that is linked to the school curriculum.

By running a Sports Store business, students learn what it is like to manage a small business. They learn what works in business, and what doesn’t work. They can experiment with different strategies and tactics to see the impact of their decisions. Playing the game well might allow them to be able to dominate the leader board - a future millionaire in the making!

The game includes real to life events including variations in product demand and realistic scenarios (external events and influences) that the player must deal with as they progress through the virtual year. Winning is about more than just money in the bank as players scores are also influenced by social and health issues.

“The pupils have enjoyed working on the game and they have used it during class time and logged onto the Sports Store at home. The game has provided a stimulus in their English class for the pupils’ solo and group talks. In

addition, the game resources have been useful for assisting in English writing tasks such as newspaper reports and advertisements. The game has helped pupils to develop their teamwork skills as it has encouraged them to

discuss the game and to give each other support when discovering new aspects of the game.”

The facts

Players can customise their virtual store to reflect their favourite team colours and logos.

The game is played over 52 virtual weeks and a player can work through the weeks as slowly or as fast as they like. Games are automatically saved so players can continue at a later time.

Players are assisted by Sam the mentor who offers the benefit of his experience throughout the game. A lawyer, accountant and bank manager also appear from time to time.

Additional resources are offered to players to help with many of the decisions, including links to websites and downloadable documents.

Just like a real businessWe wanted to create a game that was true to life so we consulted with retail experts and built a game that includes real to life events including seasonal variations in product demand and realistic scenarios that provide challenges through the virtual year.

And it’s not just about money either. To do well and survive the Small Business Game a player must look after their bank balance as well as their health and the wider community.
