Mandatory Child Protection Lessons – Term 3 Dear Parents/Carers, The aim of child protection education in primary schools is to assist students in developing skills in recognising and responding to unsafe situations, seeking assistance effectively, establishing and maintaining relationships and strengthening attitudes and values related to equality, respect and responsibility. Child protection is a sensitive, challenging area for school communities. Because children and young people are relatively powerless in abusive relationships, they rely on responsible adults to intervene and assist them. The New South Wales Department of Education, as an agency responsible for the care and welfare of students in schools, has a charter to protect the young people in its care from sexual, physical and emotional abuse and neglect, and from improper conduct. It is the role of the Department of Education to provide educational programs in schools in child protection and protect students in schools from abuse and neglect. We are required to assist in the recognition of suspected child abuse and neglect cases and provide on-going support to students within the normal duties. We will be teaching Child Protection lessons in Term 3, in all classrooms at Gloucester Public School. If you have any concerns or questions regarding child protection lessons, please see your child’s teacher this week or in week 1, Term 3. Yours in Education - Leanne Wakefield, Principal

Reading with your young child You can support your child in learning to read by reading to your child for up to half an hour every day using a story book. Here are some helpful hints.

1. Set the scene Before you read the story, tell your child the title of the book and a bit about it. Try to relate it to your child’s own experience, if you can. If it is about dogs, talk about a dog they know. You can also discuss what might happen in the story.

2. Read the book Read the story in a lively way with lots of expression. If you come across unfamiliar words, stop and tell your child what they mean. This improves your child’s vocabulary and helps them to understand the whole story. During the week, you might also like to remind your child of some of the new words from the story book and relate them to your everyday life.

3. Recalling the story After reading the book, ask your child questions about the story. For example, “What happened at the beginning of the story?” or “What happened at the end of the story?”. If they cannot remember, tell them. You might also want to try asking different types of questions that require more than a yes or no answer. For example, “Why do you think the little green dragon was so sad?” These sorts of questions help to develop your child’s language skills.

Premier’s Reading Challenge There is still plenty of time to get reading for the Premier’s Reading Challenge, which does not close until Friday 30th August. The holidays are a great time to relax and read after a busy term and also a great time to catch up on logging the books you’ve read on the PRC site. This is done by going to https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/studentExperience.html#/ or searching for ‘PRC student site’ and then logging in using the student’s school computer log-in details (which they should all know). Students in years K-2 will participate in their classes at school and I will log their books as a class at the end of the challenge. Book Fair/Grandparent’s Day Book Fair and Grandparent’s Day will be here before we know it in Week 5 of next term (Monday 19th August). This is not a dress-up year which is only held every second year. Further details will go home next term but make sure you let the special people in your lives know so they can save the date. PSSA HOCKEY KNOCKOUT COMPETITION Girls – Round 3 Game

On Friday 21st June the Girls’ Hockey Team headed down to Cook Park to play their game against Raymond Terrace Public School. It was the first game of the competition for both teams and, whilst nervous, everyone was very excited to be finally playing a game. The Gloucester girls took control right from the beginning. A short corner in the first 10 minutes saw Emily score her first goal. Play continued and with some mega hits from Charlotte and some great passing from all of the girls, she was able to score again. The next goal came from Amy in the first couple of minutes of the second half. Gloucester was on a roll and it didn’t take long before they had another one in the net. This time it was Reannah. Raymond Terrace did not give up and were able to make a few breaks during the second half, but Gloucester was too strong in their defence and kept up the attack. The final goal came from Emily after a short corner. It was a fantastic result for Gloucester with a 5–0 score. Thank you to all the parents who came down to support the girls and to Ollie for coaching them. Thanks also to the umpires Phil Moore and Trevor Bolton. The girls will take on Soldiers Point Public School in Round 4. Good Luck Girls! Team (in no particular order): Emma Bignell, Kayla Blanch, Kaitlyn Beggs, Charlotte Todd, Emily Beggs (Captain), Alicia Edwards, Makaylee Gooch, Reannah Yates, Amy Fry, Lara Taylor, Neveah Martin-Connor, Melody Maslen, Georgia Ellis and Ruby Tonks.

PSSA STATE HOCKEY CARNIVAL

Two GPS students, Jackson Moore and Lachlan Sansom, competed in the PSSA State Hockey Carnival in Lismore from Tuesday 4th June – Thursday 6th June. The boys were selected to play in the Hunter Region PSSA Boys’ Hockey Team after attending the Hunter Trials in Newcastle earlier in the year. They had a great experience in Lismore playing on some fantastic water-based turf fields with some great team mates. There were 14 teams entered in the competition. Unfortunately, half way through day 2, Lachlan got hit in the mouth with the ball, which meant that he couldn’t play on the final day. However, Jackson was able to return injury free and with a state hockey shirt. He received the coach’s award for most outstanding player in his team. The boys represented themselves with pride and considerable talent. Fantastic effort boys! Mel Seale and Kim Macdonald (Hockey Coordinators)
