IN THE QUAINT TOWN OF BAKERSVILLE, it was largely

acknowledged that one could not mention the young girl, Rose, with-

out also mentioning her sister, Alice. This would be attributed to the

fact that they happened to be the town’s only set of identical twins – and

what a set of twins at that!

Even at the tender age of 12 years, each was a striking young

lady whose natural childlike beauty was certain to blossom one day into

equally stunning womanhood. Each had pale, porcelain skin that con-

trasted with their large brown eyes that shone with intense, yet lively,

interest. Splendid dark ringlets of hair fell in waves about their slender

shoulders. Being twins, each girl’s style of dress was often identical to

THE TALE OF INSEPARABLE TWINS.

the other. As a matter of fact, the children would be impossible to tell

apart from were it not for the fact that Alice was often seen laughing

and Rose, who was of a much more serious nature, was often seen with

her brow furrowed in deep thought or concentration. All one need do

was study their countenances to hazard a guess at whom was whom.

In addition to being twin sisters, the girls were naturally also the

dearest and closest of friends. Between them secrets and stories were

shared that no other soul would ever have the honour of being privy to.

In fact, despite the contrast in their personalities, the girls got along

famously and rarely squabbled or disagreed about anything.

They were inseparable. Hand in hand, arm linked in arm, they

could be seen about town, heads touching, as they spoke to each other

in secret whispers. They played in the nearby meadows and made for-

tresses in the thorny blackberry bushes, and swam in the streams when

they were quite sure they were alone. No other child could penetrate

their close friendship. While the twins were civil and polite to all they

met, they would not permit another entrance to their intimate circle.

One could but peer in from the outside and wonder at the bond the girls

shared.

The girls were indeed a curious delight in the town, and despite

their inability to share their candidness with those outside their imme-

diate family, they were good little girls and never used their identical

appearances to trick or deceive.

As a result, the townspeople accepted their eccentricities and took

to enjoying the sight of the twins as they played about town, like two

little dolls from the same toy shop.

The girls’ parents were proud of their dear girls and made certain each

was given equal affection and attention. The family was wealthy and

so the twins never felt a need for anything, and were not pressed with

inconvenient feelings of poverty.

Their schooling was above average, and both girls studied hard

and with dedication. The charming Alice was admittedly the favourite

of her teachers. Her merry smile and lively nature earned her many

an admirer as she was the perfect blend of extroversion and modesty.

Sensible Rose felt no jealously over this fact, and instead had an admira-

tion for her dear sister that was greater than that of any other. No, she

was quite content to sit quietly to the side, observing as her sister made

small chatter and pleasantness with those she met.

Over dinner one night, Father announced that the family would be

taking a weekend jaunt to London. This made both girls quite excited

indeed. In the great city they would be able to shop for new dresses with

Mother, and visit the museums and marvel over the dinosaurian bones

that dwelt within.

During the ensuing days, the girls could speak of naught else but

of their approaching trip. They discussed what ribbons they might find

there, and what dresses were best to be worn on the long journey by

automobile. Father was one of the few fortunate and wealthy enough

to afford his own steam-powered automobile. This made him immensely

popular with the boys in town, for he once humoured their fancies by

taking them on a short jaunt about town.

But due to the roughness of the roads in Bakersville, the auto-

car was not often employed, and as a result, sat primarily unused and

covered in the family drive-way, and only dusted off and polished for

Father’s important appointments. The girls were most eager to ride

it once again, and to lean out the windows and marvel at the speed at

which they were able to pass the horses and carriages along the way.

A week later, the merry family set off for their weekend adventure; all

in good spirits. The twins clasped their hands and giggled with excite-

ment and anticipation as the auto-

car rumbled down the road.

Throughout the long journey

they alternated between drowsi-

ness and activity and they often

egged on Father to make the car

go even faster.
