In addition, Oracle's open architecture and multiple operating-system optionsgives our customers unmatched benefits from industry-leading products, includingexcellent system availability, scalability, energy efficiency, powerful performance, and low total cost of ownership.
Ellison took inspiration from the 1970 paper written by Edgar F. Codd on
relational database management systems (RDBMS) named "A Relational Model of
Data for Large Shared Data Banks. He had heard about the IBM System R
database from an article in the IBM Research Journalprovided by Ed Oates (a
future co-founder of Oracle Corporation). System R also derived from Codd's
theories, and Ellison wanted to make his Oracle product compatible with System
R, but IBM stopped this by keeping the error codes for their DBMS secret.
Ellison co-founded Oracle Corporation in 1977 under the name Software
Development Laboratories (SDL). In 1979 SDL changed its name to Relational
Software, Inc. (RSI). In 1982, RSI renamed itself as Oracle Systems to align itself
more closely with its flagship product Oracle Database. At this stage Robert Miner
served as the company's senior programmer.
Part of Oracle Corporation's early success arose from using the C programminglanguage to implement its products. This eased porting to different operating
systems (most of which support C). This gave Oracle Corporation an advantageover companiesthat used operating-system-specific languages. Oracle Corporation
programmers wrote the first C compiler for the IBM mainframe platform in orderto port to that platform

HISTORYInnovation, Leadership, Results
More than three decades ago Larry Ellison saw an opportunity other companies
missed: a description of a working prototype for a relational database. No
company had committed to commercializing the technology, but Ellison and co-
founders Bob Miner and Ed Oates realized the tremendous business potential of
the relational database modelbut they may not have realized that the company
they formed would change the face of business computing forever.
Throughout its history Oracle has proved it can build for the future on the
foundation of its innovations and, its intimate knowledge of customer challenges
and successes analyzed by the best technical and business minds in the world.

The company has leveraged its immense size and strength to serve its customers,
and to implement key technology and business decisions that upend conventional
wisdom and take its products and services in new directions.
Today Oracle is the gold standard for database technology and applications inenterprises throughout the worldthe company is the world's leading supplier of
information management software and the world's second largest independent
software company. The acquisition of Sun gives Oracle a leadership role in the
hardware arena as well.
Now more than ever before Oracle technology can be found in nearly every
industry, and in the data centers of 100 of the Fortune Global 100 companies.
Oracle is the first software company to develop and deploy 100 percent internet-enabled enterprise software across its entire product line: database, business
applications, application development, and decision support tools.
Innovation is the engine of Oracle's success. Oracle was one of the first companies
to make its business applications available through the internetan idea that is
now pervasive. Oracle has introduced newOracle Fusion Middlewareproducts
and functionality that reflect the company's goal to connect all levels of
enterprise technology, ensuring customers access to the knowledge they need torespond to market conditions with speed and agility.
Before the acquisition of Sun was final, Oracle and Sun introduced theSun Oracle
Database Machine, the world's fastest machine for any type of database
workload. Today,Sun servers and storage, Oracle Real Application Clusters,
Oracle Applications, Oracle Grid Computing, support for enterprise Linux, and
Oracle Fusion, all fuel a commitment to innovation and results that has defined
Oracle for thirty years.
What does Oracle have in store for tomorrow? Our goal is to become #1 in
middleware and #1 in applications, just as we have in database. And we will

The Oracle In India story
Oracle established its Indian subsidiary in August 1993 with less than ten people.Shortly afterwards, in 1994, it became the first major US software company toestablish an India Development Center in Bangalore to support its productdevelopment strategy for global markets.
Today, Oracle is one of the largest multi-national software employers in India.Oracle India has grown to over 3700 employees across the country with atechnology network which has hundreds of thousands of Indian softwaredevelopers as part of its community, besides significant sales and marketingoperations, product development, global support and consulting, and internal BPOservices.

working in a world-class environment and creating best-in-class products forOracle's global customers. Oracle further reinforced its India commitment recentlywhen it announced a three-fold expansion in physical space at Bangalore andHyderabad Centers, in line with its plans to increase its workforce to 4,000 in thenear future. It has recently acquired land in Hyderabad, to create a world-classcampus, having over half a million square feet of office space.
Currently, the Oracle Technology Park in Bangalore, is hosting three major Oracledivisions: Oracle's India Development Center (IDC), the company's InternationalSupport Center (ISC) and Oracle Solution Services India (OSSI). The threedivisions comprise a 'Center of Excellence' supporting the company's globaloperations. India is the only country to have three different business units of thissize and scope outside of the company's main headquarters in Redwood Shores,California.
In The Beginning
More than fifteen years ago, before India became recognized as the dynamic forcein information technology that is known to be today, Oracle was one of the firstmultinational software companies to set up operations in India. Beginning with adistributorship through Tata Consultancy Services in 1987, the companyestablished direct operations with a liaison office in 1991, and in 1993 formedOracle India Private Ltd., a whollyowned subsidiary of Oracle Corp., focused onthe sales and marketing of Oracle software in India. In recognition of thesignificant pool of highly educated software development engineers based in India,Oracle opened its India Development Center (IDC) in Bangalore in 1994. This
early commitment to the country marked Oracles vision for India as both adomestic market and a center for research and development. The company becamethe first multinational company to establish core software development operationsin India to support its global product development strategy and to address the needsof the local market. Initially, the India Development Center took on developmentwork on a project basis for different development divisions as determined by thecompanys headquarters in Redwood Shores, California. As word spread

throughout the company of the India teams record delivery time of development
projects that met the highest standards of quality, the IDC was tasked with morestrategic projects and increasingly demanding requirements. Today Oracle has itsIndia Development Centre located at Bangalore and Hyderabad and sales andmarketing offices across six Indian cities.
A Turning Point
In 1996, the India development team was challenged with taking on a strategicresearch and development project. Ultimately the teams success on the project
would propel the IDC into the development spotlight at Oracle. The India teamwas given three months to develop the first version of what would become the
basis of Oracles Internet computing technology, driving the shift to simplified, lowcost computing machines which could access information stored on larger, professionally managed servers. With no additional resources, the IDC, havingbeen asked only to show version one of the technology, delivered instead asecondgeneration version three months to the day from the start of the project.Concurrently, the team also met all deadlines and quality standards for the other 16
projects with which the IDC was tasked with at that time. The worldclassdevelopment abilities of the India development team were impressed upon thehighest levels of the company, garnering praise and recognition from Oraclefounder and CEO, Larry Ellison. This became a turning point for the India
organization, transforming the India Development Center into a growth engine, integral to the future and vision of the worlds largest enterprise software company. From that point forward the India Development Center was integrated intoOracles global software development organization, working on the latest
technology for Oracle customers around the world. At the same time, Oracles
increasing success in the country established the company as the dominantprovider of database and enterprise software to the government and corporatesectors in India.

TheIDC also contributes significantly to Oracles online developer community, Oracle
Technology Network, showcasing new technology, best practices, sampleapplications, discussion forums, white papers and through participation in globalevents.
Transformation to a Global Organization
