Principal’s Message Dear Parents/Carers and Friends, Quote of the Week:
“There’s nothing I value more than the closeness of friends and
family, a smile as I pass someone on the street.” – Willie Sargill
This Thursday is our annual Grandparents Day. This is combined this year with our book week celebrations. There will be lots to see as Year Six share a story in classrooms and guide students and visitors with activities. Also at lunch we will have a BBQ and a book fair will be held in the library. All family and friends are invited for this special day. Thanks to all the volunteers who made our athletics carnival last week such a success. We wish the best of luck to those students who will now compete at the District Carnival this Friday. Attendance at school is compulsory. If your child is unavoidably late of a morning we ask that you please walk in with your child and pass on the explanation to the office. School and all classes start promptly at 9.00 am and any time after this warrants as a partial absence. If you wish to discuss this further please make an appointment with your child’s class teacher. Have a good week,
Annie Munro

P&C News
THANK YOU to all the parents, grandparents and friends who helped in the canteen at our school
athletics carnival. The following people donated cooking and/or served on the day – Alex and Lyn Campbell, Evonne Tailby, Cara Ross, Nicole Stonestreet, Katrina Richards, Kelly Turner, Karen Anderson, Nikki Simpson, Carlie James, Mel Bass, Deanne Mann, Angela Knox, Liz Darlington, Hawke Family, Kathy Blenkiron, Kelly McTiernan, Kelly Millington and Karen Cole (Jade from KG’s mum). To anyone else who cooked and dropped off without leaving your name, “thankyou”. We made almost $950 profit on the day, which will be put back into resources for our school. It was great to have so much help and see some new faces.
The Father’s Day order forms will be sent home this week. Please send completed forms back to your class teacher as soon as possible. The gifts are very exciting and include mini tool kits, cricket stumps that can be stuck to wheelie bins, car wash mitts, fishing reels, tape measures, money boxes, soap on a rope, executive pens (plus many more). All pre-paid orders will go into the draw to win a family pass to Taronga Western Plains Zoo (2 adults and 2 children).
Grandparents Day BBQ: There will be a BBQ operating on Grandparents Day. If you are able to assist (even for 1/2 hour) please let you child's teacher know.
Sport Shirt: There has been some complaints regarding sports shirt pulling. The supplier was contacted and sent the Uniform Shop an alternative option. This shirt was very heavy and would be hot for the students. A decision was made to go for comfort and remain with the shirt that we have.
SPORT NEWS ORANA HEIGHTS ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Last Thursday we held our annual athletics carnival at Barden Park.
All students are to be congratulated on their participation and sportsmanship on the day. It was great to see so many students dressed in house colours and cheering on their team mates.
A VERY big thank you to all the parents who helped in the canteen, timekeeping or at a field event. Your assistance was greatly appreciated. Carnivals cannot run so smoothly without parental help.
There will be a special sports assembly (date & time to be advised) where students will be presented with their ribbons, age champions announced and winning house announced.

When: Lunchtime, Thursday 13th August
Where: School Hall
Why: Celebrating Book Week
Book Week/Grandparents Day Celebrations.
Are you ready? Are you dressing up?
This week on Thursday, students and staff will be celebrating Book Week. Our very special guests
will be our grandparents. Of course all visitors are welcome to come along and visit their
children’s classrooms where Yr 6 students will share a book and an activity with the younger
students.
The morning will begin at 12.00 with a parade of all those dressed up as their favourite fictional
book character. Please remember to wear warm clothing underneath your dress-ups.
The students will return to their classrooms along with their guests, to listen to the Yr 6 book
presentations.
By 1pm, a barbeque will be cooked and ready starting with Kinders and guests to get their sausage
sandwiches, cool drinks, and for the adults, a cup of tea or coffee. The students will be directed by
their teachers to the bbq in age order.
At 1.30pm the Book Fair will be held in the School Hall. All books are $5. Some are really amazing
bargains but all are well under recommended sale prices. There will be a limit of 2 books per
student until all those wanting a book have made their selection. After that, there will be no limit.
The students will return to their usual Thursday afternoon activities at 2.05pm. School ends at
3.05pm.
Hope to see you all this Thurdsay,
Donna Thomas
Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC)
Congratulations to Beau Barrett who has just completed his PRC. We have only three weeks left to
achieve this prestigious certificate as the Challenge ends on the 30th August.
Keep reading students, as many of you have just a few more books to go!
WELLINGTON SIX-A-SIDE SOCCER CARNIVAL
Last Sunday three teams, comprising of 22 boys represented Orana Heights Public School
at the annual Wellington Soccer Carnival.
A team of Year 5 boys played in the Under 12 division while Orana Aqua and Orana Blue
participated in the Under 10 division. All of the teams played five games with the Under
10s playing a ‘derby’ match against each other to complete the day. The three teams had
mixed results on the day but played a lot of soccer and enjoyed the experience.
Thank you to the parents who took the boys to Wellington and enthusiastically supported
them on the day. Special thanks to Matthew Nott, Samantha Courts and Grahame Miller
who organised the teams on the day.
