While millions of people watched on television, pilgrims from the Diocese of Orange visited New York for the Holy Father's address to the United Nations, Washington DC for the canonization of St. Junipero Serra, and Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families and the Papal Mass.

With great joy, the Orange Catholic Foundation hosted an autumn pilgrimage to attend the World Meeting of Families and the Papal Mass in Philadelphia. The delegation attended a special Mass celebrated by Bishop Vann at St. John the Evangelist Church. This is a historic church, having fostered two American saints, St. John Neumann and St. Katharine Drexel. The group heard presentations from the daughter of St. Gianna Molla and from Dr. Robert George, Professor of Jurisprudence at Princeton University. The highlight for everyone was participation in a Mass celebrated by our Holy Father, Pope Francis.

As 2015 came to a close, Pope Francis opened the holy door of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican to begin the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, a period for remission of sins and universal pardon focusing particularly on God's forgiveness and mercy. On the final day of the year, our Holy Father greeted and listened to members from Pueri Cantores, the official student choral organization of the Catholic Church.

Our good and gracious God has blessed the Diocese of Orange in many ways. We consider you, our faithful friends, as the greatest of these blessings. We are a people brought into unity from the unity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (1Cor: 12). As we look back on 2015, we see a growing Catholic community in Orange County on a journey of faith together.

It is with heartfelt gratitude and deep appreciation that we say “Thank you” to all of our donors who supported our Pastoral Services Appeal, For Christ Forever Capital Campaign, Christ Cathedral Capital Campaign, Conference on Business & Ethics, and many of our other programs, events, and diverse funds and endowments. Your contributions to the Orange Catholic Foundation allowed us to support ministries that fed and clothed the poor, educated our youth, advanced religious vocations, helped churches and schools renovate and repair facilities, and gave our aging priests added confidence for a dignified retirement.

Your gifts in 2015 helped us provide tuition assistance to 2,166 Catholic elementary school students. Your generosity also provided support for 41 diocesan seminarians to continue their education.

In 2015 our Christ Cathedral campus became an even brighter beacon of faith within and beyond the Diocese of Orange and a gathering place for all on their spiritual journey. With the purpose to continuously invite all to experience the love of Christ, it exhibits well its three key strategic anchors: to be a space worthy of the Lord; to offer profound hospitality; and to be a model of Church unity and excellence.

On and off Christ Cathedral campus, and through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Orange Catholic Foundation is your steward of Catholic philanthropy in carrying out Christ’s work to sustain and enhance all aspects of Catholic life for the entire community in Orange County.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Over this past year we have taken many strides in our journey of faith together, set forth in love by Christ. This past year has been marked by profound blessings, acts of mercy, and the sharing of the immense love held among the faithful in communion together. Let us briefly reflect on what we have accomplished together through the blessings of God in 2015 and the first half of 2016: More than 1,000 new Catholics were welcomed into our Church, more than 100,000 meals were served by Catholic Charities of Orange County, ground was broken on a new parish Church at Holy Trinity in Ladera Ranch, the fully reconditioned Hazel Wright Organ was completed and received back in Orange County and is ready to be reinstalled within the Christ Cathedral sanctuary, the refurbishment of the more than 10,000 panes of glass began on the edifice of the Christ Cathedral, our Catholic schools continued to grow and thrive, and countless other blessings, large and small. Indeed, this year has been marked by a flurry of activity and acts of generosity, love and Mercy; when viewed from a distance, they offer a beautiful mosaic of God's kingdom on earth.

In the quiet times, when walking in the early morning, I often reflect on the Great Evangelizer, Saint Junipero Serra, and if he could have imagined what the Holy Spirit would accomplish through his ministry and the ministry of all of the humble servants that followed in his path. Indeed, our current journey together and the many blessings experienced are rooted in the profound acts of outreach and love that occurred on All Saints Day in 1776, the year of American Independence, when Saint Serra founded the seventh of California's missions at San Juan Capistrano. The founding of this mission of mercy to the native population here in Orange County established our Church and set forth the journey that we walk together today.

As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of our Diocese in June of 2016, we must appreciate the remarkable journey we have traveled since that transcendent day in 1776. Our community has grown to more than 1.3 million Catholics within 62 parishes. We have more than 50,000 children under Catholic instruction in our 41 schools and parish faith formation programs. We have hundreds of ministries that reach out and care for those suffering food instability, homelessness, mental health crises, detention in area prisons, immigration status challenges, drug addiction, and domestic abuse. Together we are continuing the merciful mission of Christ set forth by Saint Serra more than 200 years ago.

I thank all of you who have given generously to support these efforts of Christian care and charity. Your stewardship continues to enable our Church to grow and support the many diverse needs of the faithful. Please join me this year in celebrating the anniversary of our Diocese on September 18, 2016 at Christ Cathedral campus. We will take stock of our many blessings over these past 40 years and look to the future in faith together.

A steward is someone who takes care of what belongs to someone else, like an administrator or trustee, not an owner. Christian stewards recognize that everything we have and are belongs to God and that God will hold us accountable for how we use the many gifts He has entrusted to our care. If we truly believe this and experience a conversion of heart, we can’t help but respond with profound gratitude. This gratitude is expressed in our celebration of the Eucharist (the very word means thanks) and in the way we live our everyday lives.

The Orange Catholic Foundation fosters the practice of good Christian stewardship throughout the Diocese of Orange. Individuals, families, parishes and the diocese itself are called to model Christian stewardship, wherein individuals more fully live their baptismal call to discipleship.

Providing opportunities for our clergy and parish lay leaders to be formed in the biblical truths of stewardship as a way of life, the Orange Catholic Foundation promotes stewardship through conferences, stewardship days for clergy and laity, parish stewardship networking events, online and publication resources, and an annual diocese-wide Parish Stewardship Weekend and Renewal in November for increasing engagement of parishioners at the parish level.

In October 2015, the Orange Catholic Foundation hosted a delegation of 25 clergy and parish leaders to attend the International Catholic Stewardship Council conference in Chicago, IL. The conference hosts over 1,000 attendees each year and offers multiple tracks and over 80 different sessions for all levels and in multiple languages. The Orange Catholic Foundation and the Diocese of Orange are members of the International Catholic Stewardship Council.

Throughout 2015, your generosity and the programs and initiatives of the Orange Catholic Foundation made a visible difference in the lives of many across our Diocese of Orange. History is being made right here, and together we are building Christ’s Kingdom here on earth.

TUITION ASSISTANCE HELPS INCREASE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ENROLLMENT"Enrollment in our 34 pre-K through eighth grade schools has inched up the past two years after more than a decade of declines," according to Greg Dhuyvetter, Superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Orange.

Our superintendent attributes the increase in enrollment to greater availability of tuition assistance, improvement in technology and instruction, and a safe, faith-based environment for children.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Orange Catholic Foundation granted $2,162,500 to 26 schools for the 2015-2016 school year. The origin of these funds and a list of the schools benefiting are listed on page 9.

TECHNOLOGY ADVANCES AVAILABILITY OF EDUCATIONAL RESOURCESDonations to the Orange Catholic Foundation enabled us to fund a program that delivers high-speed wireless internet to all of our schools and a 1:1 technology program in every elementary school.

Looking forward, our diocesan-wide school system will be the first in the nation to have an electronic lending library. That means that our students will be able to readily access books and other resource materials for their studies at anytime from anywhere.

With the recent institution of the 1:1 model at each of our schools, it has become necessary for the school libraries to offer a digital collection to complement the shift in classroom pedagogy. As such, our schools will uphold the values of education by both encouraging the use of technology in the classroom and providing accurate and appropriate materials to all schools, regardless of socio-economic status.

The Marian Alliance refers to three Catholic schools in the heart of Santa Ana, California. St Joseph, St. Anne, and School of Our Lady have a long history of service to students dating back to well before the founding of the Diocese of Orange.

During the 1990s and early 2000s, these three schools suffered significant enrollment losses. Changing neighborhood demographics reduced the number of families who could afford Catholic school tuition, and the schools themselves struggled with aging facilities and reduced programs. Concern over the viability and long-term prospects for these schools further discouraged some parents from enrolling their students in these schools.

Based on a study released in 2011 by Notre Dame's Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE), the idea of an alliance evolved. The concept included maintaining individual campuses, names, and parishes as well as neighborhood identities, but sharing resources and working together to strengthen all three together.

For the 2014-2015 school year, the alliance deepened with the adoption of a single-tuition structure for all three schools and the implementation of diocesan oversight to the tuition assistance process to make sure that parents would receive the same rate and assistance at whichever school they choose. In 2016-2017 the schools will run as a single financial entity.

To ensure that students who enroll and qualify for tuition assistance in one year can be assured of continuing at their school until they matriculate to high school, we are working to establish and build a permanent endowment fund to support our Marian Alliance schools. The endowment

fund will be in honor of Bishop Kevin W. Vann to recognize his commitment to Catholic education in the Diocese of Orange. Our initial goal is to raise $10 million for this fund. Achieving this goal would support 200 students with tuition assistance grants of $2,500 every school year (50% of the current tuition level of $5,000 for the 2015-2016 school year).

HOW TO HELP The Orange Catholic Foundation provides ways for donors to financially support our Marian Alliance schools and our students according to their intentions. You may wish to provide tuition assistance gifts on an annual basis to one or more schools where the need is greatest or to help support the Marian Alliance Endowment Fund in honor of Bishop Kevin W. Vann to help sustain our schools now and in the future. You may also wish to consider establishing a named endowment fund in memory or in honor of a loved one to support tuition assistance at one or more schools in our diocese.

Hosted by the Orange Catholic Foundation, student musicians from the Marian Alliance schools in Santa Ana—the School of Our Lady, St. Anne School and St. Joseph School—participated in a band and drum line concert on the Christ Cathedral campus on March 4, 2015.

The Marian Alliance Band exemplifies students thriving under the loving guidance of dedicated principals, supportive parents, and generous donors. Not to be left out, Bishop Vann is an accomplished musician who, after playing a piano solo at the concert, quoted St. Augustine who said, “Music is a fair and glorious gift of God.”

The Most Rev. Kevin W. Vann, Bishop of Orange, and more than 600 members of the business community highlighted and celebrated the importance of ethical leadership in business at the 13th Annual Conference on Business & Ethics (CBE), sponsored by the Orange Catholic Foundation (OCF) and held at the Hilton Orange County in Costa Mesa.

As part of this important annual program, two Orange County leaders are presented with the prestigious Bishop's Award for Exemplary Business Integrity for their unique professional accomplishments and personal dedication to ethical business practices. Sebastian Paul Musco, founder of Gemini Industries and Relief Pod International, and Richard Heim, Division President and CEO of the Western Region of Clark Construction, were recognized with this award during this year's event.

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Orange were also honored with the prestigious Farmers & Merchants Bank Lifetime Achievement Award for the innumerable contributions they have made to all aspects of life in Orange County.

The sold-out conference program featured keynote presentations from Dr. Carolyn Woo, the President and CEO of Catholic Relief Services, the American Catholic Church's international relief agency, and well-known former Vatican correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter and current Associate Editor of Crux and the Boston Globe, John L. Allen, Jr.

While the purpose of the CBE is to provide an annual forum for business leaders in Orange County, the conference also raises funds to help deserving students attend Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese of Orange.

The many benefactors of this conference allow a great number of God's children to receive a Catholic education, enabling them to grow closer to Jesus. So, to all of you, we say "thank you!" You are helping us change lives, save souls, and build a better community.

Regina and Dick Hunsaker are an exemplary couple who pledged their support for Catholic education and the transformation of Christ Cathedral. Their faith is the major focus of their lives and they appreciate the opportunity to feed their faith in many ways in our Diocese of Orange.

“Our faith is the center of our lives,” Regina Hunsaker said. “We are humbled and grateful for all the blessings our family has received, and we want to give as generously as possible to ensure that people hear the good news and share in the Catholic faith.”

Dick Hunsaker served on the Diocese of Orange Construction Committee for more than two decades. Named Alumnus of the Year by Chaminade High School in Chatsworth, he served as a member of the academy’s board of directors for four years. Dick served as president of HomeAid Orange County, the BIA’s charitable outreach for the homeless.

“Regina and I believe in putting our Catholic beliefs to work by giving back to others, both financially and through volunteerism,” Dick Hunsaker noted. “Through our actions and our giving we live our faith every day.”

Regina Hunsaker has participated for many years in the Cursillo Movement and has served on the school boards of St. Catherine’s Elementary School and Immaculate Heart High School. She is a volunteer for Second Harvest Food Bank and Catholic Charities of Orange County. Regina is also a longtime supporter, board member, and former chair of Casa Teresa in Orange.

Active parishioners of St. John Vianney Chapel of Balboa Island, the Hunsakers are a Dame and Knight in the Order of Malta. Regina participates in the Order’s Parish Nurse Program at St. Norbert’s Parish in Orange, and Dick is a past president of the Order’s Orange County location. They are also longtime members of Legatus, an organization for Catholic business leaders.

The Hunsakers met when they were students at USC. They have three children and eight grandchildren.

Strong Catholic believers, the Du's have given leadership gifts to Santa Margarita Catholic High School, the Cornerstone Campaign at their parish Our Lady Queen of Angels, St. Michael's Abbey, and our For Christ Forever Capital Campaign in support of Christ Cathedral renovations.

"We have been blessed to be successful in business and in life," Ben Du said, "so we are happy to give to the less-fortunate, those who need shelter and housing, and in support of Catholic causes. Christ Cathedral is central to Catholic worship and outreach in our community, and the renovation is something we are pleased to support."

"Our Catholic faith is a bedrock of stability and spirituality in our lives," said Carmela. "We want to share it with others and give toward organizations that serve God."

Their venturesome natures began over 50 years ago when, as newlyweds who had just finished university, they packed up everything and moved to the United States from their native Philippines. "It was an adventure," Carmela remembers. "We were so young and we didn't think of the consequences. We just did it."

The Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA) is an annual campaign of the Orange Catholic Foundation held on behalf of the Diocese of Orange that raises and grants funds to support ministries and services that serve all parishes and the local community. It also gives parishes the opportunity to raise significant capital funds by earning rebates after they have reached their own individual parish goal in funds received.

The faithful of all 62 parishes and centers are invited in January or February each year by their pastor to prayerfully discern a pledge to the PSA. Donors then have until the end of the calendar year to complete their pledge.

In 2015, 24,827 families contributed $9,697,287 that resulted in $6,222,000 granted to the PSA-funded ministries and services and $3,405,805 returned to the parishes and centers for their own vital projects. This is a win-win for the diocese and parishes as the Orange Catholic Foundation covers all the administrative costs associated with the total campaign, about 7.5% of all dollars raised.

Thank you to all who participated in the 2015 Pastoral Services Appeal. Your gift helped to serve the needy, the homeless and the hungry. You helped a deserving family send their child to Catholic school. You helped a Catechist, a Director of Religious Education and a lay leader grow in their ministry. You helped someone unable to hear the Mass to understand and be communicated to in American Sign Language. You helped bring the word of God and Sacraments to someone incarcerated and away from their family. You helped a seminarian, a deacon and a priest in their formational studies. If your parish met or exceeded its goal, you also helped your parish to move closer to realizing its vision and mission.

Five men were ordained to the Transitional Diaconate on June 27, 2015 at St. Columban Church in Garden Grove. In our Diocese the Transitional Diaconate Ordination happens typically one year before their Priesthood Ordination. The funds from the Orange Catholic Foundation provide the seminarians with their education, books, and training they need to become the next leaders of our Church in Orange.

ORANGE COUNTY CATHOLIC DONORS SUPPORT VOCATIONS

The following story was provided by Fred LaPuzza, Director of Restorative Justice and Detention Ministry. Last week a man in his early 40’s came to my office. He said at age 16, he was convicted of murdering another youth during a gang fight while he was under the influence of PCP and was tried as an adult. After his seventh parole hearing, he was released from prison two and a half years ago. He now has a full time job and is going to college to become a certified drug and alcohol counselor. He said when the instructor told the class they needed to write a paper for their assignment, he knew right away what he wanted to write about. He wanted to write about our office of Restorative Justice/Detention Ministry, because the volunteers who ministered to him while he was in prison helped him change his life. He said part of what he learned through restorative justice is how the victims are affected by criminal behavior. He said the ministry taught him how to rely on his faith in God, which for him means living out his new way of life in profound humbleness. He realizes not everyone is going to accept him back in the community, but he does not take offense. He accepts the way others see him with complete humility and is extremely grateful.

James LeMay met his future wife, Mary Dicks, through their mutual involvement in youth ministry at St. Paul Catholic Youth Center in Minnesota. After marrying, both of them remained involved with church-related activities, especially with other young people.

They belonged to many parishes because James’ work kept them moving, and in every city they resided they were active members of their home parishes.

Our parents lived their faith every day,” said their daughter, Susan LeMay, “and their selfless devotion and involvement in the church were wonderful examples to us.”

When they moved to California, the couple continued their church involvement with a special emphasis on working with youth. Susan said the LeMays loved St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and the Diocese of Orange.

After Mary passed away in February 2013, James toured Christ Cathedral and was impressed with the beautiful campus and its bishop, Kevin Vann. James wanted to memorialize his wife in some way, so his children suggested that together they start a fund to help youth ministry in the Diocese of Orange and commemorating the couple's long years of working with young people.

But as the new fund was developing, James died suddenly. Their children then decided to dedicate the new fund to both parents and use it to benefit the parish youth ministry at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Irvine.

“We want the young people who benefit from this fund to know that our parents tried to emulate Christ in their everyday lives and this fund will allow that ministry to continue,” Susan said. “Even after death they are still giving so that others will believe. They always talked about a kind and loving God, who accepted everybody.

The first annual Light of Christ Legacy Society Mass was held on November 8, 2015 in the Chapel in the Sky on Christ Cathedral campus. A brunch and special commemorative ceremony with Bishop Vann was held immediately after Mass in the Tower of Hope.

CHRIST CATHEDRAL MARKS KEY MILESTONES

IN FIRST YEARS AS GLOBAL CATHOLIC

Just four years after acquiring the world-renowned Crystal Cathedral property, the Diocese of Orange is well on the way to transforming its 35 acres into Christ Cathedral, the spiritual and physical center for Catholics and other pilgrims near and far. Despite some challenges, including the complexity of the renovation projects on the seven buildings, an accelerated timeline and ambitious fundraising goals, a number of major milestones have been reached.

Crystal Cathedral Ministries' sooner-than-expected decision to relocate and lease the property at the former St. Callistus Catholic Church required the renovation of the Arboretum, Large and Small Galleries and the Tower of Hope at Christ Cathedral in order to accommodate the parishioners, who quickly formed the foundation of the new Christ Cathedral Parish. Mass is now celebrated daily at the renovated Arboretum and more than 11,000 people attend 11 weekend Masses offered in English, Spanish, Vietnamese and Chinese. Restoring and modernizing the 50-year old structures required seismic strengthening and the installation of an innovative underground air conditioning system. The restoration of the Arboretum has won numerous architectural awards.

The administrative offices of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Orange, the Orange Catholic Foundation, and many diocesan ministries moved from the former Marywood Pastoral Center campus in Orange to the newly renovated Diocesan Pastoral Center on the cathedral campus.

• In 2013, St. Callistus School also moved successfully and on time into its new home next door in the Pastoral Center, becoming Christ Cathedral Academy.

During the 2015-2016 school year, more than 300 students in preschool through grade 8 attended Christ Cathedral Academy.

• Several small chapels have been dedicated and are in daily use throughout the campus, including the Chapel in the Sky at the top of the Tower of Hope, the Unity and Reconciliation Chapel in honor of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange in the Cathedral Cultural Center, and a new Oratory in the Diocesan Pastoral Center.

• John A. Romeri, former director of liturgical music for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, was recently hired as the first Christ Cathedral Director of Music Ministries. Dr. Romeri will lead the development of Christ Cathedral parish's music program and the liturgical music program that will support major diocesan celebrations.

• A special tabernacle designed by the late Egino Weinert has been acquired for the future Blessed Sacrament Chapel and commemorated by Tim & Steph Busch

• An 18th century painting by a Mexican priest of the original image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of the Diocese of Orange and the Americas, was donated by a generous benefactor.

• The cathedral's Hazel Wright Organ -- one of the most famous musical instruments in the world, which was sorely in need of a thorough rehabilitation, was shipped to its original manufacturer in Padua, Italy for restoration and will return to Orange County in 2016. “Hazel” will be stored until the Christ Cathedral Sanctuary is completed in 2018 and the organ can be reinstalled.

Bishop Vann marked the beginning of the first phase of construction on the Christ Cathedral Sanctuary in December 2015 with the blessing of workers and a large crane. The more-than-10,600 panes of reflective glass are being removed, reconditioned and remounted. This is a critical first step prior to construction within the Cathedral's gleaming reflective skin and will take eight to 10 months to complete.

• Perhaps most notable among the many milestones reached by Christ Cathedral and the Orange Catholic Foundation is the successful fundraising efforts. Through the For Christ Forever Campaign launched in 57 parishes in 2013-2014, followed by the “Capstone” phase of the campaign in 2014-2015, more than $110 million in gifts and pledges have been raised for all campaign case elements (education, priests’ retirement, parish share, and Christ Cathedral). Thanks to the generosity of more than 24,000 families and donors, more than $61 million has been granted to all case elements through December 31, 2015. This includes $37 million in grants made by the Orange Catholic Foundation to the Christ Catholic Cathedral Corporation for the renovation and restoration of the seven buildings on the Christ Cathedral campus.

During 2016-2017, the Orange Catholic Foundation will continue to work with Bishop Vann and Fr. Christopher Smith to raise an additional $16 to $20 million in new pledges to supplement the generous contributions from the many donors who continue to support our capital campaigns in order to help complete the renovation of the Christ Cathedral sanctuary.

"We have done an amazing amount of work in a small amount of time," said Father Christopher Smith, Rector and Episcopal Vicar of Christ Cathedral. "This is a cathedral in progress, and we want to keep moving forward," Father Smith added. "It is a beautiful campus and will only become more breathtaking as our transformation moves steadily forward and continues to lift people's minds and hearts to God, like the beauty of music and painting."

In 2015, our Christ Cathedral Guild donors participated in the annual "Baptism of the Lord" liturgy and dinner, the dedication of the EWTN studio in our Tower of Hope, a celebration of the canonization of St. Junipero Serra at Mission San Juan Capistrano, and several other events on the Christ Cathedral campus.
