It was on the calendar again today, and whereas the Curse almost struck again and caused another cancellation, the gods in charge of rainouts must have let their guard down (or something like that) just long enough for us to nally get the ride in. But barely. Rain was the order of the day, or more accurately: real rain prior to the ride, wet remnants of recently passed rain throughout the ride, and the threat of more rain all morning and afternoon. It was not a good day to have waxed the bike the day before. Just twenty bikes showed up for our 8:30 start from Capo Playhouse. A show of hands at the pre-ride brieng indicated that almost everyone got rained on coming to Capistrano, and also indicated why we might suspect so relatively few members showed up. Which is a real shame because the route today was safe, not uncomfortable, and a ton of fun, about which we’ll say more below. As is usually the case when a ride originating in San Juan Capistrano takes us into the northeast corner of San Diego County, the rst leg of today’s route went over Ortega Highway. Nothing to report there; a standard crossing. Down past Elsinore, over to I-15 and off at Temecula went we, followed by a fty-three mile eastbound run on Hwy 79 in the direction of Julian. Once out of town past the rst gas/bio stop on the eastern outskirts of Temecula, the road headed into the mountains, and the fun began. Rolling along on a steady climb, easy curves at times, tighter 30 mph curves at others, the road passes through unincorporated lands, bouldered peaks and elds, some citrus groves, and some ranches, up and over hills and down through valleys. Somewhere along the long stretch down Hwy 79 it got real cold. The route gains elevation gradually, deceptively, from 1,300 ft at Lake Elsinore to over 3,000 ft on the way to Santa Ysabel. At 3,000 ft, in February, on a day like this with wind trailing the weather front, and dark, slate gray clouds poised menacingly overhead, it’s gonna be cold. Not exactly seventeen- degrees-on-the-Death-Valley-ride cold, but cold enough to numb the chin a bit and make those who don’t have heated gear wish, again, that weren’t the case. It was along Hwy 79 as we passed some fenced cow pasture we were startled to nd a bull with his front legs propped atop a cow’s back, she obviously providing him a boost for a better view of our pack as we rode by. The delirious look on his face was a dead giveaway that he suffered from Harley envy. I know that sounds odd, but what else could it be? And the look on the cow’s face? I’ve seen it before ... it was unmistakable: “are you done, because if you are, for the love of god get off.” Arriving at the resort, we had ninety minutes to lunch at the casino’s restaurant, fast food stops, and all-you-can-eat buffet. Judging from the Facebook check-ins at noon, the majority of the group opted to graze at the buffet. Striding en masse through the casino oor in search of eateries in full leather gear, I couldn’t help but think the security guys manning the ceiling cameras must have been on red alert watching the 99 percenter biker gang from Orange County invade their gold mine. While on nowhere near the scale of the Boston Red Sox’ dreaded “Curse of the Bambino,” a span of eighty-six years during which the Sox failed to win the World Series, we in OC H.O.G. have been laboring under our own little curse, the “Curse of Barona.” Twice last year the ride was scheduled only to be rained out. It was on the calendar again today, and whereas the Curse almost struck again and caused another cancellation, the gods in charge of rainouts must have let their guard down (or something like that) just long enough for us to fi nally get the ride in.

A show of hands at the pre-ride briefi ng indicated that almost everyone got rained on coming to Capistrano, and also indicated why we might suspect so relatively few members showed up. Which is a real shame because the route today was safe, not uncomfortable, and a ton of fun, about which we’ll say more below.

As is usually the case when a ride originating in San Juan Capistrano takes us into the northeast corner of San Diego County, the fi rst leg of today’s route went over Ortega Highway. Nothing to report there; a standard crossing. Down past Elsinore, over to I-15 and off at Temecula went we, followed by a fi fty-three mile eastbound run on Hwy 79 in the direction of Julian. Once out of town past the fi rst gas/bio stop on the eastern outskirts of Temecula, the road headed into the mountains, and the fun began. Rolling

along on a steady climb, easy curves at times, tighter 30 mph curves at others, the road passes through unincorporated lands, bouldered peaks and fi elds, some citrus groves, and some ranches, up and over hills and down through valleys.

After lunch and a fi ll-up in Barona, the best road of the day (as measured by fun index) came twenty miles later when we turned onto Highland Valley Road and negotiated its twisting, turning, undulating, boulder-dodging 15 mph curves on a nine-mile run to the I-15. Highland Valley meanders through boulder-strewn hills where very expensive homes have been randomly situated, the road cuts in sharp turns to service each one. Single-fi le all the way through here. At one point, we twisted around an elevated view and looked out on a long, narrow, cloud-enshrouded valley. But no one had much time to stare, as the road dropped steeply through a half-dozen hairpins to the valley fl oor, each turn requiring utmost care on entry speed and line. This road and the total distance of the ride of 225 miles made for one of the more challenging two-diamond rides we’ve scheduled in some while.

Once on I-15 after Highland Valley, it was pretty much freeways all the way home. We crossed from I-15 to I-5 via Hwy 78, but along the way in San Marcos we bailed off to visit Biggs HD and pay our respects to the Biggs H.O.G. chapter. We arrived just in time to catch the tail end of the fi nal set of a band that had been playing at some event hosted by the dealership. Everyone wandered around, some bought a shirt or two, and most just checked out the bikes and vendors. There was a Boss Hoss parked there. I was reminded again how damn heavy that thing looks, and the one thing in life I would really like to never do is lay one down then attempt to right it. No human could do it. It would take a crane, or a determined elephant.

A half-hour later, we were underway again, soon heading up I-5 this afternoon happily devoid of the usual weekend traffi c glut through San Clemente and Dana Point, on to the ride’s end at OCHD. What a difference a year makes! We are six weeks into 2012 and not a single rainout so far. Last year at this time, nearly all of January and the fi rst half of February were washed out. This is indeed a good omen for the coming year. And so much for the Curse of Barona.

Where do you live?Rancho Santa Margarita.

What do you do for a living?SharePoint Architect for Broadcom Corp.

How long have you been riding motorcycles? On and off for 15 years since College.

How long have you been riding a Harley?Almost fi ve years.

How long have you been an OC H.O.G. member?Almost fi ve years.

What is your current Harley?I started with a 2007 Heritage Softail because Kathi was not sure she wanted to ride. Well her opinion changed on the very fi rst day. In fact once she got on the back she made me ride back to the dealer to buy a Sundowner seat.

Then I bought a 2009 Road King Classic because it had anti-lock brakes! I bought it just before the Summer Cruise to Napa Valley because something told me I needed to have anti-lock brakes before that ride. Those brakes saved our lives! Riding back from San Francisco a lady driving in the left lane of the 101 decided she needed to make the next right exit and didn’t look before she switched into my lane. At 80 mph I could see the whites of her eyes as we headed for her side door! Without the anti-locks I would have locked both front and rear wheels and we would have gone down hard! But, because of those brakes we were able to slow down just enough to avoid hitting her.

Last summer, after our extended Mo-Fun 10-day Summer Cruise Plus Plus, I bought a 2011 FLTRU Road Glide Ultra. I had the race tuner added and the engine Dyno’d by Ray and his excellent service team after great advice from Jozepi! Best Harley I ever owned!

Annual mileage?12,000 - too many!!!

What kind of riding do you most like to do?Touring up the Coast Highway and in the Mountains.

What are your favorite rides?Summer Cruise is always one of the best! Overnighters are always great with OC HOG.

What is your most memorable riding experience on a Harley? In October of 2010 we rode up the Hudson Valley in New York State when the fall colors were at their peak. That was a beautiful ride.

Then, last summer, after the Summer Cruise, several of us continued on for another (Mo-Fun) six days, riding up the coast highway to Tiburon on the S.F. Bay. From there we continued up the coast highway, then through the Avenue of the Giants to Fortuna. Next we headed east on Highway 36 to Lassen and then to

Chester. From Chester we rode to Lake Tahoe. Finally we headed back around Yosemite to Fresno. Then home. Total was a 10-day ride with some lifelong friends!

What rides would you like to do this next year?Either ride up to Victoria Island or to the Rockies and Yellowstone. I really want to ride over Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mt. Park. Anyone else want to go?

Is there anything else you would like to share? The OC HOG group is the best! We have made so many great friends over the last 5 years. I want to send my deep appreciation to Roger, Carlos, and now Kimmie, and all the OC HOG Offi cers and Road Captains past and present for making this the best HOG Chapter. Kathi and I are truly appreciative of the enormous effort we know everyone gives to make this such a great group!

trip. On many of our 2012 overnighters, we have a scheduled “free day” for you to plan an adventure of your choice. For safety and liability reasons, we strongly encourage you to ride with the Chapter on the planned route, except for any allotted “free day.” Additionally, if a situation arises where you fi nd yourself staying at the hotel on days before or beyond the Chapter negotiated contract please do not assume you are entitled to the same discounted rate. Although the hotel may offer you the group rate as a courtesy, you should not demand the group rate for nights that the Chapter is not staying at the hotel.

Please remember, when you do not travel with the Chapter and you book a room from our block, you are taking a room away from a member who wishes to travel with the Chapter for the entire trip. If this is the case, we recommend you book a room outside of the Chapter’s block of rooms. Please respect and follow these guidelines so that we can continue to provide the best ride experience for the majority of our Chapter members.

We’ve had the luxury of some great weather the fi rst two months of the year and haven’t had to cancel any rides due to inclement weather. Last year at this same time, most of our day rides were canceled due to a very rainy January and February. A question I get asked by new or newer members is “How do I know when a day ride is canceled?” If it’s raining the morning of a scheduled day ride, you can be assured the day ride will be canceled. If the streets are wet from rain and it’s cloudy, check the Chapter website and your e-mail for the most up to date information. Additionally, if you have signed up for Chapter twitter notifi cations you will receive a tweet alerting you to the cancelation of a day ride. Overnighters are never canceled due to rain; they are considered rain or shine rides.

The arrangements for the Grand Canyon 5-day overnighter have been fi nalized; we will head to Laughlin on Wednesday,

Orange Coast HOG Sweeps Poker Run Event!

Once again the strength of this chapter has come together and it paid off at the Joe Cortese Poker Run Event. We swept the event by winning the Chapter Challenge, High hand, and low hand. Jeff Davidson took home the winnings for high hand and Paul Schley claimed the low hand prize. Thank you to everyone who was in attendance which contributed to the Chapter Challenge win and congratulations to the poker hand winners.

Our fi rst overnighter of this year is quickly approaching and if you are planning to attend, you should already have your hotel reservations. Attending the overnight rides is one of the best ways for you to get to know how the Chapter operates and to build some lifelong relationships.

I would like to share a few thoughts about the process for signing up and attending overnighters. The sign-up sheet is made available at Chapter meetings. We ask that you are relatively certain you will attend the overnighter before you add your name to the list. The purpose of the list is to get an idea of the number of hotel rooms to negotiate and to plan the best ride possible. The Chapter signs a contract with each hotel for a discounted rate on rooms based on the number of members attending the ride. The willingness of the hotel to work with us and the rates we pay are based on the trust we build with the hotels. It refl ects badly on the Chapter when we commit a specifi ed number of blocked discounted hotel rooms and end up with booked rooms that are far fewer than the contracted amount which affects our ability to negotiate future contracts.

There is a lot of work required to plan our overnight trips and although we respect and understand that emergencies do happen, we ask that you ride with the Chapter for the duration of the overnight

April 25th and stay there for the fi rst night. On Day 2, our travels will take us through Seligman, AZ to Williams to spend the night. Jimmy the Monkey Man will be providing the entertainment in the evening at the Williams hotel. Day 3 takes us to the Grand Canyon to spend 2 hours touring the area before we continue on to Sedona, AZ for the night. On the fourth day we will ride to Jerome, AZ stopping for lunch and then head to Wickenburg for our fi nal night out. Day 5 brings us back to Orange County having made some new friendships and memories to last a lifetime. There are a few rooms still available for this great trip so we will have the sign-up sheet available at the February Chapter meeting. The Three Rivers Overnighter sign-up sheet will also be available at the meeting.

We will have a lot of new Chapter merchandise available for purchase at the February Chapter meeting. Our inventory includes large black & silver eagle patches, large black and silver Chapter top rockers, small black and silver eagle patches, long sleeved gray Chapter T-shirts in sizes Small – 3XL, and a new design black Chapter baseball cap. I would also like to encourage everyone to order a name patch if you don’t already have one. It helps me and your fellow chapter members to get to know your name if you are wearing a name patch. They are available in three color schemes; silver on black, gold on black, and refl ective on silver. See Ron, our Treasurer, to make any Chapter merchandise purchases.

We have an outstanding group of motivated Offi cers and Road Captains that make all the rides and events on our ride calendar happen seamlessly. We are constantly looking for volunteers who are interested in getting involved in working and managing the Chapter. We get some great new ideas and suggestions from new energized people, so if you are interested in getting involved, contact any Chapter offi cer or me. Thank you for supporting your Chapter.

Happy Trails!Kimmie
