The concert opens with the world premiere of Michael Martin’s high-octane Zero to Sixty!, written to celebrate our diamond anniversary. Sparks will fly when Mr. Martin, fourth trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, is later joined by his brother Christopher Martin, principal trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, as they go head-to-head in a fiery “sibling rivalry” performance of Bizet’s Carmen Fantasia for Two Solo Trumpets and Wind Ensemble. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of this historically significant document, our program is dedicated with sincere gratitude to the men and women who led and continue to lead the fight for equality. We feature two moving musical tributes to the Civil Rights Movement: Adolphus Hailstork’s American Guernica was composed in memory of the four young girls killed in the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama on September 15, 1963; and Mark Camphouse pays tribute to the venerable Rosa Parks and her peaceful and dignified act of defiance in A Movement for Rosa.
Program highlights will include:
• Liberty Fanfare – John Williams, arr. Jay Bocook• American Guernica – Adolphus Hailstork• A Movement for Rosa – Mark Camphouse• Candide Suite – Leonard Bernstein, arr. Clare GrundmanDear Friends,
Welcome to a special season celebrating the Northshore Concert Band’s 60th anniversary! Our programming for the season is summarized by the four thematic titles. The Fall concert is entitled Zero to Sixty! and includes a world premiere; and the powerful and moving manifesto for freedom, Music for Prague 1968 by Karel Husa, plus trumpet soloists brothers Chris Martin from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Michael Martin from the Boston Symphony Orchestra! Winter brings Carmina Burana: Love, Luck and Fate, with a transcription of the orchestral favorite, and our special guests for the Lifetime of Music playing music by Gustav Holst. Spring offers a musical tribute to the civil rights movement, Liberty and Justice for All. The year comes to a close with A Diamond Celebration, featuring a transcription of the virtuosic Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber by Paul Hindemith and a joint performance with the Northshore Band Alumni.
We want to share our music with you and hope that you will become part of our celebration - it won’t be the same without you!
Yours,
