The Grant County Chamber of Com- merce and all of John Day is looking forward to welcoming you to their community. They boast 750 miles of snowmobiling in Grant County and are ready and willing to show you what they have to offer. Rides will start on January 19th and continue through Sunday with the exception of Saturday. Saturday events include the general membership meeting, informational seminars, election of district directors and a Saturday night dinner. A registration form is included in this paper. Registration is $20.00, including dinner, and $15.00 for children under 12. The board meeting will be on Friday; also rides on Friday and there will be a Friday night social with fun and games for all. The Snowballers will appreciate you signing up for the rides in advance to help with their planning. Nominations are open for Snow- mobiler of the Year, Dealer of the Year and Winter Recreationist of the Year. Snowmobiler of the Year is a person or persons who have con- tributed significantly to the sport of snowmobiling over the years. Winter Recreationist is a person who through their profession has contributed to and supported snowmobiling and Dealer of the Year is a dealer who continues to promote OSSA member- ship and support snowmobiling. Club supported nominations must be in to the OSSA office no later than January 1st so the OSSA board has time to vote on the nominees. Elections will be held for District Directors for district 4 and 7. Clubs in these districts are entitled to two votes each by their designated dele- gates. Delegates vote for the candi- date within their own district. Please send the names of your delegates to the OSSA office prior to the conven- tion. Elections will also be held for Directors at Large in districts 5 and 7/8. Directors at Large are elected by the board. Rogue Snowmobilers are still gath- ering signatures to combat the Ore- gon Wild proposal to turn 450,000 acres of multiuse land into wilder- ness. Yes, 450,000 acres. You can help by gathering signatures on a petition and sending them to Kim Greenwaldt. Contact her at [email protected]. We did not receive the grant but OSSA is committed to helping prevent this wilderness expansion. For donation information contact Kim or OSSA. Again, the impact of wilderness expansion of this magnitude will affect everyone. Continue to write, phone, fax or email your local com- missioners, state representatives, sen- ators and your elected representatives in Congress. Senator Wyden and Senator Merkley as well as your Ore- gon Congressmen need to hear your opinion of this proposed wilderness expansion. Mt Hood Snowmobiling: The Mt Hood Wilderness bill, contrary to pre- vious statements, does take away prime snowmobile areas. Contact Joni Mogstad for more information. Email to Ron Wyden’s Portland office to voice your objections. Email [email protected] ate.gov. And last, but not least, our thanks to all the trail clearing crews and the grooming crews for getting the trails cleared and making sure our equip- ment is ready for the snow season that will soon be here. Happy Thanksgiving everybody. Blessings to all and special thanks to all our Service men and women. Happy Snow Days have started to arrive. As I sit here typing out this article for this month’s newspaper, the white stuff has started to accumulate in the mountains and valleys for your rid- ing pleasure. I have read several articles lately stating the local state snowmobile associations and clubs have dwindled over the past few years because of low snow and snowmobiler apathy. Then we hear reports and read articles in the media of Yellow- stone cutting back on daily entries to 318 snowmobiles and 78 snow coaches. Well let’s talk about some of the good things us as snowmobilers are doing locally that have a positive impact on our sport. We are hitting the airwaves with positive messages, proactively promoting snowmobiling as a safe family sport, not hurting the environment while riding cross country. We are doing this on the state level and thanks to the Rogue Snowmobile club; this is being broadcast as a public announcement in the Medford area. Believe it or not some environmentalists are starting to see the forests should be open to multi-users. There are still a large number of people who feel the forest should only be for the ani- mals and the peaceful solitude. Remember by taking little steps you can go a long ways in promoting the good of snowmobiling. Here are a few to consider: Join a club and the State Snowmobile Association, Volunteer time to do trail clean up, don’t be afraid to let people know you’re a snowmobiler, and be respectful to all users of the forest. If we continue to be proactive instead of reac- tive, we can make a difference and educate more people on how the forest should be enjoyed by all and not one special group. Here is a quote from the Blue Ribbon Magazine “Ignore your rights and they’ll go away” I would like to remind everyone of the OSSA Convention that will be held in John Day on January 19-23, 2010. The Grant County Snowballers will be hosting rides all week long prior to the convention. There will be more information to come by mail and on our web site of all the activities happening during the week. This is a reminder that the rooms at John Day are going fast so if you haven't made your reservation, do it now. Mt. Jefferson Snowmobile Club By Patty Isaak Hi Everyone! The leaves are changing colors and snow is on its way. A new storm is moving in and the Roger Schmidt Shelter is ready for new memories to be made. So let’s have a great winter season! We had a fall work party and did a few repairs to the shelter and wood chopping and stacking. Thanks to the group that showed up and tackled the job again. Our groomer is almost ready, elec- trical fixes are being fixed. Thanks Dave! We will have a groomer work party soon to grease it up and get it ready for all the wonderful snow we will have soon. We will be working on trail marking this winter season also. We will be working on our camp host program again. Please contact Ron McClaughry for more information. Our club is working on a small version map to hand out for new people new to the area so they can feel comfortable to leave the parking lot and find their way back. Thank you to renewing members for getting in your dues in sooner. Our numbers are strong and if you know someone who rides and they are not a member of a club, please encour- age them to join a club. Yellowstone National Park

A new plan to provide for lim-ited regulated snowmobile andsnowcoach access in YellowstoneNational Park for the next twowinters has been approved.

An environmental assessment(EA) and proposed rules werereleased for public review lastfall. Comments received havebeen reviewed, and a finding ofNo significant Impact has beensigned. It is available online athttp://parkplanning.nps.gov.

The Plan allows up to 318commercially guided, Best Avail-able Technology (BAT) snowmo-biles, and up to 78 commerciallyguided snowcoasches in a day inYellowstone for the 2009-2010and 2110-2011 winter seasons. Italso continues to provide formotorized oversnow travel overSylvan Pass and the Eastentrance road.

During the next two years, theNational Park Service will pre-pare a new EnvironmentalImpact Statement and a new longterm plan for winter use in Yel-lowstone National Park.

However, this decision pro-vides long term direction for win-

ter use management in Grandteton Nation Park, and the JohnD. Rockefeller, JR. MemorialParkway.

Twenty-five snowmobiles aday will be allowed to travel onthe Grassy Lake Road, with noBAT or guiding requirement. OnJackson Lake, an initial dailylimit of 25 BAT snowmobileswill provide access to ice fishingopportunties for persons possess-ing appropriate fishing gear and avalid state of Wyoming fishinglicense. The limit may beincreased to 40 snowmobiles perday if monitoring of parkresources indicated acceptableconditions. Grooming and motor-ized oversnow travel on the Con-tinental Divide Snowmobile Trailbetween Moran Junction andFlag Ranch will be discontinued.

Rules to implement the deci-sion will be published in thecoming weeks in the FederalRegister, to allow the parks toopen for the winter season asscheduled on December 15,2009.

Let it Snow!

I can’t get over how fast Octo-ber has gone. George at Lake ofthe Woods has received his firstcouple inches of SNOW!

I want to thank, once again Ted& Barb Naccarati, Ray Gibson,Scott & Rachel Blower andGeorge Gregory for all their helpthis last weekend with cleaningthe rails at Lake of the Woods.

In addition to the work atLower Great Meadow on Octo-ber 31, cleaning out the creekbed. We have one more sched-uled work party at the GreatMeadow on Saturday, November14, at 10 am. We will be going upto the Big Meadow warming hutto cut fire wood for the shelter. We will also be splitting the logrings that are currently up therewith a wood splitter. That is if wedon’t get to much snow by then. But if we do we will be travelingby snowmobile & sleds.

We have a crisis at hand! Wecould be losing 450,000 acres ofCrater Lake to wilderness area. This would be land from hwy140 up to hwy 58. If approvedthis would affect all the riding in

this area, including All of PelicanButte. You should all havereceived the Rogue clubs packetthat I sent out. Please, Please getthose petitions signed and yourhand written letters sent to ourSenators Representatives andlocal county commissioners. Youcan e-mail or call me if you needmore packets, have questions, orwant to find out how you canhelp. This is OUR back yard weare talking about. So lets getinvolved! [email protected].

Also, don’t forget to get yoursnow park permits!

We need them starting inNovember. Double check yoursled registration and tags.

While you’re at it this is a goodtime to check those belts, sparebelts, plugs oil, etc so you’reready to ride when the snowarrives.

As you may have heard, theForest Service is installing a new, larger, culvert under the entranceroad to the Low lodge. This willimprove the water flow throughthe Great Meadow. This is onlythe first phase in the process tomove the high water levels wehave experienced in the meadowduring the winter. There will bemore work done to complete thisprojects and will take place at alater date. Let’s hope we seesome improvement this winter!

I’m still working hard withMargaret Bailey, district Ranger, from Fremont-Winema National

Forest, on acquiring the the shedat Four Mile Lake. The plan is toturn it into a winter warming hut.I’m making some progress butstill have a ways to go on thisissue.

I’m also in the process ofbuilding a wood splitter for theclub. this will be used to helpstock the firewood in our sheltersand make it easier for us oldguys! Thus far the main framework has been built. I hope to beinstalling the spindles, hubs &tires soon. I am also looking forthe rest of the hardware, search-ing for those super good deals. Iam hoping to make it available toclub members to use for a smallrental fee, to help generate fundsfor the club.

New Members: Jeff & JackieGion 2 sleds 2 riders. Jim &Karen Mieloszyk 3 sleds 3 riders.Robert and Anna Poteet 3 sleds 3riders. Tom Rezner 2 sleds 2 rid-ers. Brett & Claudia Tosh 3 sleds3 riders. I also would like toremind everyone that the clubscurrent calendar of events can befound on our clubwebsite:www.kbsnowdrifters.org.

One last note: George at Lakeof the Woods has a new winter-schedule out. He will have opencabins 7 days week. The Over-board Pizza shop and the Storewill be open Friday, Saturday andSunday. The Store will open at 9am and Pizza shop at 11 am clos-ing at 7 pm.

OK, story is somebody goofedbig time this year and we met atthe Grooming Shed for ourannual 1st. meeting of the year inOctober instead of September.Even the great BBQ/Potluckfood and fancy desserts didn’t domuch to calm down a few rowdymembers. It’s didn’t matter thatthey can’t get the sleds out onthe snow yet, they were ready, willing and able.

President, Neil Bork, reportedthat he’s working on a newbridge for Ruby Creek. If FSpermission comes in time itcould be done this year. It will becompleted next year for sure.

Jim Sheler Grooming Chair-man, reported a total of 439 vol-unteer hours tallied since June.Pole Creek was done, and the1065 trail about 90%. The 100road was also worked on and the1090 trail, which was cutthrough last year, wasretrimmed. The club is stillworking with the FS onimprovements to trail 7340.

Jim also said the SnowCat hasbeen in for service. Tracks werereplaced along with the “bogie”wheels. Jim feels the Tucker isnow in excellent shape to startthe season.

New business was discussedand Vicky Christenson suggestedwe do some kind of an activityafter the potluck and meetingsinstead of just adjourning asusual. Myrna Clarke volunteeredto help here.

It has been decided to have a“White Elephant Prize” BingoParty. each family is asked tobring a favorite “White ElephantGift” in a brown paper bag. Thiscan be old, new, cute, funny, use-ful or not....Get the picture?

This will be on November14th. It’s our annual Thanksgiv-ing Dinner and meeting held atthe community hall, starting at6:30 pm. The club will furnishthe Turkey and everyone isasked to bring aside and dessert. Please BYOB table service, smiles and be ready for a funtime.

Remember, Please bringcanned foods or package goodsfor our local food drive. MyrnaClarke, suggested we consider

reavaluationg club dues and pos-sibly consider increasing them asmy other clubs have been doing. This was put in the files for nextyear officers to consider.

Glen Ferfuson, made a motionto finish cementing the rest ofthe floor in the grooming shed,or as much as money will allow, after checking the cost andmoney available. Ed Yarbro, sec-onded. Motion passed.

The drawing was held. 3rdplace, $15.00 went to VickyChristenson, 2nd place, $25.00went to Jim Sheller and the 1stplace, $35.00, went to MyrnaClarke. Congrats to the winnersbe there to play and win.

Moon Country had a breakfast, road clean up, general membershipmeeting followed by dessert on Sat-urday the 17th of October. Thebreakfast was omelets in a bag (ChefChuck), spider web potatoes (ChefJan) along with mystery muffins(Chef Diane). The road clean upwas redefined as a road and parkinglot treasure hunt with categories of:“What was the thing that you justcouldn’t pick up,” “I need a micro-scope to see that.” “Oh how cute,” “Honey I need you,” “Oh my…I actu-ally touched that,” “What the heck,”“Why? Why is that our here”, “ Whatwere they doing when they lost that,”and “Please tell me you were wearinggloves when you picked that up.”Some of the winners were a “fittedsheet,” a pocket knife which Judisold and donated the proceeds to theclub, and the “Honey I need you”category went to Luann for finding a

broken drive belt/fan belt that wasover 6 feet long and large in diame-ter. Prizes for the winners of the roadand parking lot treasure huntincluded a Gummi candy hand – thatcrunched when eaten, Gummi fingersand toes and eyes in individual testtubes (who said we were not kids atheart especially when Halloween isjust around the corner). Alas, therewas a bottle placed randomly con-taining a certificate for $5.00. Noone found it and so it was retrievedfor next time.

The general membership meetingfollowed the Gummi candy awardsand covered by-law changes, website, hot line discontinued, next meet-ing is at the Elks. You should have been there!!The first meeting of the year hada wonderful meal made by Travis,Tami, Don & Elizabeth. It wasoutstanding! It was great to seeeveryone after a long summer.

As I talked about in my firstletter of the season, the wilder-ness proposals are still out thereand you can tell foremost on mymind. If you enjoy snowmobilingin the Southern Oregon Cascadesor the Wagner/Siskiyou Moun-tains this is truly our call to arms. Not only will it STOP all snow-mobiling, it will restrict all out-door recreation as we know it.This includes camping in themountains of Southern Oregon, and hunting, and fishing.

Now is the time to take actionto prevent this from happening bywriting letters to your congress-men to let them know that youhave a right to enjoy the greatoutdoors and are more than will-ing to share them with the nonmotorized community. So if youknow the owner or manager of asporting goods, outdoor, boat, ormotorcycle business that will beimpacted by this, print a packetwith all the information, maps, and petitions from the RogueSnowmobilers website and getthat to them ASAP. Return thepetitions at our next meeting andwe will be passed on to our repre-sentatives making them aware ofhow we in Southern Oregon feel.

For those of you that went tothe annual work party, thank youvery much. We were able to fillthe wood sheds at ThousandSprings and Claude Lewis Snowparks. There were needed repairsdone to the Cat Shed and theWarming Shed. Eighty miles oftrail maintenance was completed,

as was our Adopt a Highwaycleaned up. There was still timeto enjoy a hamburger, potluck, and good friends telling stories.Once again to the 35 + peoplethat showed up to help THANKYOU!

In Closing we have a greatsnowmobile season planned witha lot of great club events, alongwith events shared with otherclubs in our area. Check yourschedule in the newsletter or onthe website. Any of you thatknow any snowmobilers that arenot members of the club pleaseencourage them to join. This likeno other year it’s so important tohave a large number of familymemberships so we can convinceour legislators that we to want toenjoy the great outdoors.

LET IT SNOW!!!!!OCTOBER EVENTSThe first meeting for the year

was met with great anticipation asover 85 people gathered togetherfor a delicious meal, to reminisceabout last season and to talk bigabout next season.

Some highlights from the nightwere meeting Ted Dole fromWaterworld, discussing thewilderness strategy, Dennis guar-anteeing that we will have snowfor the Christmas Tree ride andKim getting a ‘stud’ to take homethat Bob found for her!

Next we had a great turnout forthe swap meet and open house atPolaris. Sleds were sold, mem-berships collected, signaturesgathered for the petition and Billgot training wheels for his sled ( Idon’t understand why he was notamused). We also shared a greatBBQ meal as well as gorgeousweather.

Another classic moment washad when the geriatric VillagePeople showed up!

The next day over 35 of usgathered at Thousand Springs toget it ready (as well as Hamaker)for the upcoming snow season. We had people gathering, cuttingand stacking wood, repairing thewall of the CAT shed, repairingthe roof of the CAT shed and theshelter, fixing broken windowsand downed shingles, picking uptrash at the snow park and ourAdopt A Highway stretch, andsweeping out the shelter. Kidsand adults joined in and workedvery hard until about 1:30 whenwe sat down for a well deservedlunch.

After reviewing the pictures, itwas discovered that one person inparticular seemed to be standingaround with his hands in hispockets all day. I won’t mentionany names but just want to let theoffender know that he didn’t getaway with it!

As you can see, we alwayshave fun so be sure to join us atour next outing…..come on out tothe open house at Water Worldand join in the fun!

WILDERNESS FIGHTThe deadline to get your peti-

tions in has been extended. Please keep gathering signaturesthrough the end of the year. Wewould appreciate you sendingthem in as soon as you fill up asheet or two so we can get thenumber of signatures up.

We are well over 1000 nowwith many petitions still out therecirculating. Now is the time to goto your county commissionersand let them know that you wantthem to NOT support any newwilderness areas in Oregon and tospecifically oppose the two inSouthern Oregon. Also, keepwriting letters to all your repre-sentatives and don’t let the issuedrop.

What we are doing is working!!Be encouraged and don’t give up.Oregon Wild called and talkedwith us so know we have got theirattention and we know they aren’t

happy with us. We have been ona talk radio show and NO ONEdisagreed with us. We need tocontinue to be vocal about this.
