Hwang's, Slater's big days not enough for Sacramento
River Cats rack up 12 hits but fall 9-5 to Memphis
The Sacramento River Cats (17-28) fell 9-5 in game two of their four game series to the
Memphis Redbirds (29-18) Wednesday afternoon at Raley Field
Memphis jumped on Sacramento starter Joan Gregorio early, tagging the right-hander for four
runs through the first three frames. It was the first time Gregorio had allowed more than three
earned runs in an outing this season.
The River Cats fought back, however, led by Kelby Tomlinson, Austin Slater, and Jae-Gyun
Hwang, eventually cutting the deficit to one. The trio combined for seven hits and five RBI, but
ultimately it wasn't enough as the Redbirds pushed five more runs across over the last three
innings. Of Memphis' nine runs, six came by way of home runs.
Tomorrow night's matchup will feature a couple of left-handers as Sacramento
southpaw Michael Roth (3-3, 4.54) faces Memphis' Marco Gonzales (1-0, 0.68). First pitch is set
for 7:05 p.m. (PT) and the game can be heard live online at rivercats.com and on the air on
Money 105.5 FM.

20-Hit Outburst Powers Giants To 11-7 Victory
San Jose scores eight runs over final four innings to earn win
LANCASTER, CA - The San Jose Giants knocked out a season-high 20 hits in an 11-7 victory over
the Lancaster JetHawks on Wednesday evening at The Hangar. Gio Brusa smacked a game-tying
two-run home run in the top of the seventh before Ryan Howard gave the Giants the lead for
good with an RBI double in the eighth. San Jose (19-28) scored eight runs over the final four
innings to claim the wild back-and-forth affair.
Howard (4-for-5, 2 RBI) had four hits and drove home a pair of runs to lead the Giants offensive
attack. Brusa (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI), Bryan Reynolds (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) and Dillon Dobson (2-for-
5, HR, 2 RBI) each homered for San Jose. Jonah Arenado (3-for-5, 2 2B) and Daniel Carbonell (3-
for-5, 2B, 3 RBI) also contributed with three hits apiece. Eight of the nine Giants players in the
lineup finished with multi-hit games.
San Jose enjoyed 3-0 lead through 4 1/2 innings before Lancaster broke through in the bottom
of the fifth against Giants starter Matt Solter. A walk to Roberto Ramos started the frame
before a Solter wild pitch advanced the runner to second. Two batters later, Chris
Rabago delivered a one-out RBI single to bring home the first JetHawks run of the night. Scott
Burcham then stepped to the plate and crushed a two-run home run to left tying the game 3-3.
The rally continued with back-to-back singles from the next two hitters, Wes Rogers and
Branden Rodgers, before a Sam Hilliard sacrifice fly gave Lancaster a 4-3 lead.
The Giants though would answer with two runs in the top of the sixth to immediately move
back in front. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Arenado singled. Carbonell
was up next and he hit a fly ball into right that was lost in the lights by the right fielder Hilliard.
The play resulted in a double for Carbonell with Arenado scoring all the way from first base with
the tying run. Following a walk to Jalen Miller, Howard grounded a single up the middle to plate
Carbonell for a 5-4 San Jose advantage.
Solter returned to the mound in the bottom of the sixth and issued a one-out walk to Ramos
before Mylz Jones popped out for the second out of the inning. A pitching change brought Will
LaMarche into the game and he was greeted by a Rabago single to put runners on the corners.
Burcham was up next and he hit a high pop up into shallow right field that got caught in the
strong wind and dropped behind the second baseman Miller. Burcham was credited with a
single on the play as Ramos came home to tie the score 5-5. Rogers followed with a broken bat
bloop single into shallow center plating Rabago as the JetHawks reclaimed the lead at 6-5.
Rodgers then delivered another bloop single into center as Burcham came home to make it 7-5.
The see-saw battle continued in the seventh as the Giants used the long ball to draw even. With
two outs, Dobson reached on an infield single bringing up Brusa, who launched a towering two-
run home run down the right field line. The homer, Brusa's team-leading eighth of the season,
tied the contest 7-7.
LaMarche pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh for San Jose working around a two-out
single before the Giants went back to work offensively in the eighth. With one out, Miller drew
a four-pitch walk to start a rally. Howard then laced a double into the left field corner to score
Miller from first with the go-ahead run. Reynolds was up next and he smacked an opposite field
two-run home run to deep left center pushing the lead to 10-7. The home run was Reynolds'
second this season.
Following a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth thrown by reliever Dylan Rheault (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0
SO), San Jose scored their final run of the evening in the top of the ninth. With two outs,
Arenado ripped a double into the right center field gap before Carbonell produced an RBI single
into center for an 11-7 cushion. Carbonell's single was the Giants' 20th hit of the game.
Ryan Halstead (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) sealed the victory for San Jose with a scoreless bottom
of the ninth. Halstead allowed a one-out double to Hilliard, but retired the next two JetHawks
hitters to close it out.
LaMarche (1-0) was credited with the win out of the Giants bullpen. The right-hander
surrendered two runs (both earned) in 1 1/3 innings.
Carlos Polanco (2-3) suffered the loss in relief for Lancaster. Polanco allowed all three runs in
the top of the eighth.
San Jose jumped out early on Wednesday with a three-run top of the second. With one
out, Heath Quinn doubled off the left center field fence before Dobson hammered a two-run
home run to right center. Later in the inning, Brusa singled and would eventually score on a
Carbonell two-out single.
Solter began his night with four scoreless innings for the Giants before running into trouble in
the fifth. Solter allowed only two singles and threw a total of just 47 pitches over the first four
frames. He was charged with five runs (all earned) on six hits over 5 2/3 innings during his start.
Solter walked three and struck out three.
