PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS Dear colleagues and friends,
Yet once, I have the honor to invite you on behalf of the
Organizing Committee of the 32nd Panhellenic Congress of Paediatric
Surgery with International Participation, to attend the forthcoming
Congress of our Association, which will be held in Athens, October
3-6, 2019. Thanks to the kind offer of the Athens Medical Center
Group, the scientific sessions of the most important event,
organized every 2 years by the Greek Association of Paediatric
Surgeons, will take place in the comfortable and fully equipped
amphitheater of the Group in Kefalari, Kifissia.
Among the main topics of the 32nd Congress, “child abuse” is
notable. “The battered child”, a contemporary issue that is
escalating, and often frustrates the community and scientific
society. The comprehensive analysis of this issue will include
lectures and round tables, with many experts on the field. Other
important topics covered, will be Anorectal Malformations and
Hirschsprung’s Disease, with lectures and round tables covered by
some of the most distinguished experts, such as Prof. Marc Levitt
(Ohio State University, USA), Prof. Stuart Hosie (Munich, Germany),
and Prof. Timothy Lee (Houston, Texas). The Organizing Committee
invites all colleagues to join the pre-congress Colorectal Surgery
Course and Workshop, which will include lectures and interactive
real-time telecasting of anorectal malformations’ repair and
operations for Hirschsprung’s Disease, with commentaries by our
guests.
The conjoined Colorectal Nursing Course, from specialized nurses
working with Prof. Levitt at the Center for Colorectal and Pelvic
Reconstruction, Nationwide Children’s Hospital (Columbus, OH, USA),
will give our nurses the opportunity to have an insight in
Colorectal Nursing, a field hardly known in our country.
As expected, there will be far more topics discussed in the 32nd
Congress. There are free announcements, lectures and round tables
covering all fields of Paediatric Surgery, especially serious and
ambivalent neonatal, paediatric and adolescent issues, for which
there are different approaches.
You should also include in your agenda other sessions, such as the
lecture about bullying, from Prof. George T. Pavlidis in the
opening ceremony, and the painting exhibition of the artist who
created the theme graphic for the Congress.
There are going to be many updates in our webpage. Stay updated in
www.gaps.gr/congress2019/ . We invite you all to participate
actively.
On behalf of the Organizing Committee
Alexander G. Passalides
President of the Greek Association of Paediatric Surgeon, Head, 2nd
Department of Paediatric Surgery, “Panagiotis and Aglaia Kyriakou”

Abstract
Introduction and Purpose: Cutaneous wound healing is a complex
process that requires the cooperation of many cell populations and
factors. Studies have shown that the nervous system is involved in
healing through neuropeptides and neurosteroids produced and / or
released locally. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is an adrenal and
neurosteroid hormone with neuroprotective and immunomodulatory
properties. Its synthetic analogue BNN27, which does not convert to
estrogen or androgens, retains these properties of DHEA when used
in an animal model of in vivo inflammatory pain. We have previously
shown that treatment with BNN27 decelerates cutaneous wound
healing, in vivo. Based on the above, the aim of the present study
was to investigate the effects of BNN27 on wound healing in vitro
and to understand the mechanisms mediating these effects.
Methods: For our studies we used primary fibroblast cultures
isolated from foreskin samples obtained during circumcision for
unrelated problems. The fibroblasts were initially cultured with
DMEM / 10% FBS and on the day of the experiment the medium was
replaced with fresh containing vehicle or BNN27 at 10-8 M. The cell
proliferation rate was assessed over a four day period by the MTT
method. Migration rate was examined with the scratch test and
contraction rate with the collagen gel contraction test.
Results: Human fibroblasts, when treated with BNN27 (10nM) in
vitro, had a significantly increased proliferation rate at 24
hours. Similarly, the same concentration significantly increased
the rate of cell contraction, with no effect on cell migration.
Finally, BNN27 at the same concentration significantly increased
IL-6 protein levels at 12 h.
Conclusions: Our data demonstrate significant effects of BNN27 on
wound healing in vitro and may help to develop new therapeutic
regimens to treat abnormal healing and related skin diseases.

VARICOCELECTOMY WITH HYPER-SELECTIVE LIGATION OF SPERMATIC VEINS.
MICROSURGICAL SUBINGUINAL APPROACH
USING EXOSCOPE VITOM 3D
ABSTRACT Introduction
The operations used to treat varicocele are Ivanissevich, Palomo
(open or laparoscopic), and subinguinal varicocelectomy with
microscope.
Purpose
Introduce the technique by microsurgical subinguinal
varicocelectomy using exoscope VITOM 3D, a 3D technology system,
and analyze the advantages compared to patients treated with the
same method with a stereoscopic microscope.
Material
During the years 2010-19, 6 adolescents, aged 10-17 years,
underwent surgery, 4 of them under microscope and 2 with
VITOM.
Method
The camera of exoscope is positioned 30 cm from the incision and
magnifies the surgical field by up to 30 times, allowing the
surgical team to monitor directly on two 3D glasses with 3D
glasses. This results in super-selective ligation of all spermatic
veins, preserving the lymph nodes and the spermatic artery, which
is separated by the use of papaverine.
Results
Not all patients had recurrence or complications. However, the
VITOM surgery time was half the microscope, as finding veins and
lymph nodes is easier by switching the magnification to a remote
control, making it easier to control the screen and field at the
same time. Tool management is more convenient as the camera
distance from the incision is longer, reducing fatigue and making
it easier to learn the operating technique.
Conclusions
VITOM 3D is a new operating approach that is significantly superior
to the microscope because of its operational relevance. Applying it
to a wide range of operations in pediatric surgery it has an
advantage over any other approach.

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR) is diagnosed in
approximately 3% of the children with an urinary tract infection.
The aim of this study was to access the effectiveness of the
insertion of hyaluronic acid for treating vesicoureteral reflux in
children. Methods: In this study 70 patients, aged 1,5 to 11 years,
were included. All these patients suffered from VUR and were
treated with the insertion of Dextanomer Hyaluronic acid (Dx/HA).
Results: The total percentage of success was 78.4 %. More
specifically, in Grade II VUR the success rate was 93.7%, in Grade
III 75.7%, in Grade IV 33.3% and in Grade V cases, the insertion
did not seem to have the expected response. Conclusion: The
endoscopic method of the hyaluronic acid insertion, is a safe and
effective method for the treatment of vesicoureteral reflux in
children, especially for patients with Grade II or Grade III
VUR.
