Genesis:
Abhivyakti was founded in the year 1998 as an informal art & culture group for social
cultural recreation among youth through Srijan Utsav, Natya Mahotsava and folk arts
exhibitions. It was founded by local youth from various streams who came together for
youth initiatives in Giridih. Two informal action groups emerged from this process –
Abhivyakti Artists’ Association for Generation (AAAG) to promote art and culture
activities in the area and Abhivyakti Youth Association – for youth initiatives to social
action.
It was formally registered as a trust under Indian Trust Act, 1882 in the year 2002.

endogenous theory of development. We believe in the inherent values and bottom up

• Community health
• Gender equality

About the Organizaiton:
Abhivyakti Foundation is a non-profit voluntary organization registered under Indian
Trust Act,1882. We are a team of young social activists from different streams and
professions, some of the members have been actively involved with different development
programmes in the area as youth interns. The team is inspired with Gandhian thought of development and we are looking forward to increase participation of local marginalized
communities in development mainstream. The organization has its roots in the non formal
group ‘Abhivyakti’ that was started in the year 1998 by interested youth for social cultural
activities to fill up the cultural void in Giridih which has glorious past of its cultural
heritages.
The initial activities of organization revolved round “Srijan Mahotsav”, “Natya
Mahotsava”, and academic programmes; and gradually increased its involvement with
development mainstream that led to formal registration of this groups as Abhivyakti
Foundation. Abhivyakti is working with youth in community development blocks Giridihand Jamua whereas the extensive operational area is extended across the Giridih district
and adjoining districts of Deoghar, Dumka, Hazaribag and Koderma. The specific focus of

extended area coverage is in the fields of capacity building, documentation, awareness
activities, study and participatory research.
The organization relies on youth voluntarism for social action through its two wings
Abhivyakti Artists’ Association for Generations (AAAG) that was founded to promote
music, theatre and fine arts for social advocacy and Abhivyakti Youth Association (AYA)
that looks after volunteer drives. In this process we have been working with college pass
out youth who act as change catalyst and Abhivyakti provides them necessary inputs to build up their personality, orientation and capacity. While working with them we usually
provide them challenges in form of smaller projects for development of IEC materials that
could help the civil society organizations in mass education. We only provide them an
opportunity to explore the ideas and a range of reference and some study materials from
our library, interviewing with other groups and peer based learning. Besides IEC some of
the interested youth have also associated in the GIS based micro-planning work and some
study work where the organization has facilitated the process. This helps them synthesize
the ground realities and build up their own perception and response to the issues of social
concern.
The involvement of youth not only associate them with the local history, culture, valuesand ethos but also help them to keep away from substance abuse, emotional disturbances
and builds up self confidence and esteem.
After getting their jobs they are working in their own capacity and occasionally involve
themselves with organizational activities, when they are back at home. The core
programmatic activities of the organization revolve around community health, education,
capacity building, mass motivation and cultural events.
