University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad (UASD) is utilizing all
mass media channel like electronic media (TV, KIOSK CRS, Internet, A-aqua
and Radio) print media to disseminate latest agricultural technologies to the
farmers of north Karnataka and elsewhere. The extension reach of the
university improved tremendously with the establishment of Krishi Community
Radio Station, Information KIOSK, ATIC and KVKs. The scientists of the
university, teachers of agricultural college, home science college, extension
scientists of KVKs, extension education units, ATIC and the Scientist of
horticultural research stations, contributes the information to the mass media
specially to the Community Radio and KIOSK as well as Doordarshan
programmes.

Electronic media
1. Krishi Darshan through DD1 and Krishi Programme through ETV
The university is utilizing doordarshan TV and ETV for dissemination
of latest agricultural and allied field technologies. The university scientist are
involved in the programmes as the timely need programmes finalized in
mass media co-ordination committee conducted every month. The recorded
programmes as well as live programmes telecasting through ETV as well as
doordarshan Kendra regularly. In addition the scientists are involved in video
conferencing and live telecast on crop seminars for the benefit of farming
community.

2. Radio
University of agricultural sciences, Dharwad utilizing radio in big
way to disseminate information to the farmers. The university sends
pakshika salahegalu (hints to the farmers) to All India Radio Dharwad that
broadcast fortnightly. The university scientists from time to time give
interviews, lessons and answer to the letters through AIR Dharwad. The
university scientist are also participating in the phone in live programmes.

3. Krishi Community Radio
Some of the people think that FM Radio is only for the young
generation, because in their mind they have that FM Radio broadcast only
film songs and they are meant for entertainment. Who said FM Radio is only
for the younger generation. The university of agricultural sciences, Dharwad
has provided this by launching an Krishi Community Radio Station FM 90.4
MHz exclusively for over all development of farming community. The basic
idea behind this launch was to reach the farmers through the medium of
radio and try to address their problems.

It is the first Community Radio Station in India under state
agricultural university setup and first Community Radio in Karnataka. The
effective coverage of this CRS is around 15-20 km. This station is
broadcasting the latest agricultural technology guidance by successful and
experienced farmers, experts and folk literatures.
The thrust of krsihi FM 90.4 channel is to educate the farmers on
crops and cropping pattern, improved agricultural practices, agricultural
technologies, animal husbandry, poultry farming, fisheries, horticulture,
science for women health and nutrition, food security, planet earth, self help
group, income generating activities.

The KCRS is functioning based on the suggestions of technical
advisory committee. The committee chalk out the programmes that catch the
attention of farmers, seasons for instance.
It has well setup studio and digitalized equipments to record, edit
and broadcast the programmes. It plans the programmes depending upon
the farmers needs in Kannada that too in north Karnataka style.

3. Kissan call centre
The Government of India has identified Agricultural Technology
Information Centre (ATIC) first of its kind in India of UAS, Dharwad as one of
the ³level 2 centers´ to answer farmer¶s queries. A toll free telephone no.
1551 (Kissan Call Centre) was installed. It is having the facility of talking
directly with the farmers.

4. Information KIOSK
University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad under RKVY project
has installed 200, information KIOSKS at APMC¶s, RSK¶s, KVK¶s, ect. The
content from package of practice book on Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal
Sciences published by UAS, Dharwad was developed and uploaded to all
the KIOSKs. The uploaded information on various production technologies,
post harvest technologies, pest and diseases management, marketing,
export and related aspects uploaded along with photographs.
Likewise the university utilized ICT to disseminate the information
pertaining to agriculture and allied fields to reach the farmers.
