Orientation Captains Hello friends! Kellie and I are very excited to welcome you into the wonderful society of Coggeshall! My name is Shannon Zhang and I grew up along the sunny coasts of Southern California in the master-planned, oddly well-manicured community that is Irvine. Determined to see beyond the beige and grey tones of suburbia, for college I moved to Connecticut, where I majored in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale. Some highlights of my college career include: tap dancing, (attempted) poetry writing, freshman-mentoring, and, of course, moving at least thousands of microliters of liquid from one test tube to another via pipette. Since moving to Hyde Park, I have managed to continue almost all of these activities and more! Currently I am on the board of the Bridgeport Free Clinic, Mission Nutrition, and the Oncology Interest Group. I also dance with Pritzker Dance Crew, Zumba on the side, and read the monthly Book Club picks! If you ever need me, I can be found most likely in my home with my cat, Kit Kat, or at a potluck near the cookies. Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have, and please join me at Zumba! COGGESHALL Hello future friends! My name is Kellie Schueler and I hail from the great state of Oregon, specifically Bend, a little city tucked into the mountains that I will subject you to stories about, trust me. I graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Human Biology in 2014 and then took two gap years working as a public health researcher in the DC area—mostly learning how the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid works (hint: not efficiently). In college, I ran track and field for three years and then decided I actually preferred to run after something, so I joined the Ultimate Frisbee team. These days, I live in Hyde Park with my unbelievably amazing cat and pretty okay fiancé. At Pritzker, I’ve spent most of my time getting involved in Medical Students for Choice (MSFC), the Family Medicine Interest Group, and helping run one of Pritzker’s free clinics, Maria Shelter. I have also played an inordinate amount of Intramural Sports with my impressively athletic and supportive classmates. Who knew seeing your life flash before your eyes while running on slick ice in tennis shoes, oh I mean “Broomball,” could be so much fun! A recent meta-analysis provided definitive evidence confirming what Pritzker students have long known to be true: Coggeshall is the best Pritzker society. Obviously, I don’t have room to cite this fundamental literature, but I hear Dean Humphrey is the lead author. Enjoy your summer—get out there, have some fun, and pretend you’re not anxious about med school starting! But real talk, you’re going to love Pritzker and we are so excited to get to know you all. What’s Good?

First of all, congratulations on making the best decision of your life by choosing to attend Pritzker! We are super pumped to welcome you to your new home at Pritzker and into the DeLee society.

I was born and raised in San Diego, California and studied Systems Engineering and Healthcare Management at Washington University in St. Louis. I graduated college a semester early and used that time before med school to pursue my passions. I taught high school math and science, traveled to Central America, and spent some quality time up in Northern Minnesota on the lakes.

At Pritzker I help lead the Ophthalmology Interest Group, Business in Medicine Group, and the Jewish Medical Students Association. I spend most of my free time biking (I grew up mountain biking but have learned to appreciate the Lake Shore Drive path), playing intramurals, watching baseball, and sleeping (yes, it is still possible to sleep a lot in medical school).

We are very excited to meet all of you in August! In the meantime, feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Dear DeLee-ers,

My name is Kevin Kennedy and I’m really excited to welcome you all to Pritzker! I’m from suburban San Diego and graduated from UC Berkeley, where I was a pre-med English major. I moved to Minneapolis after graduating and spent about two and a half years in the Twin Cities, where I first experienced cold weather, fell in love with biking, and discovered the joys of living in the city. I also conducted some psychiatry research, but spent most of my time reading about bioethics, public health, and the American healthcare system.

The first year at Pritzker will be an awesome time. You will meet amazing people, get involved in a wide range of activities, and dominate the rest of the grad schools in intramural sports. I look forward to meeting you all in person and welcoming you into the Pritzker family. Please reach out to me if you have questions about anything!

Welcome new Huggies*!

I’m Nick Lyon, and I’m so excited to welcome you to Chicago. This area has been my home for a long long time. I grew up in the Chicago suburbs, came to UChicago for undergrad, and now I’m guaranteed at least 3 more years in Chicago with Pritzker. The city is such a great place, which is one of the main reasons why I’ve really enjoyed sticking around!

I have been introduced to other people as the “friend with the eccentric hobbies.” So, I’m going to roll with that theme and quickly share some of my quirkier endeavors. I got the university to allow me to set up beehives on the roof of a building. I help run the Pritzker Gardening Club. I had a hedgehog (RIP Hedge 2014-16). I keep a fish tank that doubles as a garden (aquaponics). I’ve dug up dinosaurs. My undergrad research involved giving people MDMA. Yup, that’s a few things about me. Welcome to Huggins and welcome to Pritzker!!

*I don’t think this is a real nickname, but I’m going to start the trend.

HUGGINS

Hi Everyone!

I’m so excited to welcome you to Pritzker and meet you this fall! From north Philadelphia, born and raised, at the public library was where I spent most of my days until I traveled to New Hampshire to study at Dartmouth and begin preparing myself for the Chicago winters. After completing majors in chemistry and classical languages (ie, Latin), I solidified my standing as a Slytherin through the pursuit of more potions in England. I then worked at a boarding school in rural-ish Pennsylvania, where I taught chemistry and physics, baked an inordinate number of chocolate chip cookies for the dorm, and coached track and field hockey.

At Pritzker, I’ve loved traveling to Mississippi and South Dakota to learn more about rural healthcare, and volunteering at the free clinics, especially Maria Shelter. However, indubitably my most formative experiences: intramural floor hockey and learning to knit (thanks, Knitzker!).

Living and working in Chicago this past year has been incredible, thanks to my wonderfully kind, silly, and brilliant classmates (the most amazing of whom are, of course, Hugginses). I can’t wait for you all to become a part of the Pritzker family; if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out :)

ROWLEYHello new Rowley members,

Welcome to the Pritzker family and congratulations on winning the society lottery! We are excited to meet you all!

I’m Nzuekoh, a native of Cameroon who grew up in the land of the cheeseheads (that is Wisconsin). I ventured out east for college, concentrating in chemistry at Harvard. I stuck around Cambridge for two years after graduation. During that time, I performed translational HIV immunology lab research, served as a medical scribe, and worked as a crisis services volunteer for a suicide prevention hotline. I have been blown away by Pritzker since my first visit prior to applying, and I’m so happy to now be a student in what truly is an amazing community.

At Pritzker, I’m involved with the Maria Shelter Free Clinic, the newly minted Docs and Debates, Say Ahh, Pritzker Dance Crew, JOURNEES, South Side Science Scholars, and Pritzker Christian Fellowship. Additionally, I enjoy drawing and painting, being a novice knitter, cooking, spending too much time browsing architecture and design blogs, staying active outdoors (jogging along the lakefront here is everything), and spending quality time with friends and family.

One of the aspects of Pritzker I appreciate most is the commitment to wellness and how well-balanced (and remarkably kind) my classmates are. This is most definitely the place where fun comes to be revived.

Have a wonderful summer and some much-deserved rest. We can’t wait to welcome you in person! Please don’t hesitate to reach out via email anytime!

Hi Everyone!

I’m so excited to welcome you to Pritzker (and hopefully Rowley!) this fall! I’m Julia, and I grew up in beautiful Denver, Colorado. I studied Women’s Studies at Duke University, where I worked at the Women’s Center, played rugby, and fell completely in love with Durham. After spending a year at a non-profit in India after college, I settled in San Francisco, home of the best sandwiches (Dutch Crunch!) and burritos around. In San Francisco, I worked in the Care Management Program at SF General Hospital and volunteered as a Health Educator at the Women’s Community Clinic while completing a post-bacc. Before moving to Chicago, my partner and I took some time off to live in Fort Collins, Colorado and learn to brew beer.

My first year at Pritzker has been wonderful! The incredible Aaron Smith and I started HOPS (Homebrewers of Pritzker Society) and have brewed some delicious (and casual award-winning) beers. I’m also involved in Medical Students for Choice and a member of the Wellness Committee. Outside of Pritzker, I volunteer as a tutor for Selah Freedom, where I have the privilege of working with incredible young survivors of sex trafficking to prepare for the GED.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions about school or (equally important) the amazing places to eat and drink in Chicago!! I look forward to meeting you all soon!
