This is going to be an important time for you, filled with new responsibilities, new questions, and new expectations. The Orientation Team would like to welcome you to FIT. We will be assisting you throughout Orientation Week, with a special emphasis on the first day, when we will guide you through your activities in small groups. We are all excited to meet you and help you on your journey here!

New Student Orientation Week will be full of fun activities designed to help you become familiar with the college campus, acquire important information, and learn all about what FIT has to offer. The Orientation Team is here to make sure you have a wonderful orientation experience.

When you check in, you will be assigned to an orientation group. Students from a variety of majors are assigned to each group so that you can get to know a mix of other new FIT students. You will stay with this group through the first week of orientation. This means it is important that you come to the Orientation Group Meet-Up at 10:30 am on Wednesday morning.

Thursday is dedicated to academic success at FIT. Both school and departmental meetings are held on Thursday, so be sure to read this schedule to find the location of the meetings for your major. Additionally, check out

the Academic Resource Fair and Academic Success sessions.

On Friday, you will choose from a selection of workshops inspired by the mission of FIT, including off-campus trips designed to help you navigate New York City.

Don’t worry—if you ever feel lost or confused, we will be staffing an information booth in the Feldman Center Lobby every day. Feel free to stop by and ask questions. You can also sign up for the off-campus trips in the lobby starting on Thursday.

Common Project

One of the programs we are most excited about is the Common Project. As a group, you will create a presentation showcasing your experiences during your first week at FIT.

To get to know FIT better, you will be given a list of items to collect throughout campus, and you will assemble these with pictures of your experiences and new friends. Your group and other teams will have a chance to present your Common Project at an event on Friday, January 27, in Haft Theater. Craft materials will be available in The Center, Student Life’s creative workspace on the seventh floor of the David Dubinsky Student Center, throughout the week. The Center will serve as a meeting place for groups who want to work on their projects when there is downtime in the schedule. We will explain more about the project when we meet as a group. Good luck!

We can’t wait to meet you!

August 2 Last day of summer session

Late Registration Policy

Deadline to add or drop classes:In Person: Friday, February 3 (Registrar’s Office closes at 4:45 pm) Through MyFIT: Sunday, February 5 (online system closes at 11 pm)

First week of semester: late registration/add-drop periodMonday, January 30–Friday, February 3 Students may add and drop courses through Friday, February 3.

To accommodate this, the academic dean’s office and major departments and student services offices will be open until 6 pm during the first week of classes.

Students registering for the first time this week must pay a late registration fee. Fees (tuition, program change, late registration, etc.) must be paid at the time of registration.

Only students formally registered may attend classes this week. Instructors will check their rosters right before class. Instructors will not admit students into classes whose names do not appear on their student rosters. Students who do not appear on the instructor’s roster will be instructed to leave that particular class.

The following guideline is only for extenuating circumstances. Deans may approve requests to register after the official late registration (add/drop) period only in rare cases.

After the add-drop period is over and under extenuating circumstances, students may have a course added to their schedule within the second or third week of the semester by following these steps: An instructor must write a memo approving the late registration and include a valid reason for the schedule change*. The department chair and school dean must also approve the change. The paperwork should be brought to the Registrar’s Office in the Feldman Center, Room C158. If applicable, special approval(s) must also be included. Once the registration is processed, all fees (tuition, program change, late registration, etc.) must be paid immediately.

*Acceptable reasons for a course change outside of the add-drop period are traditionally administrative in nature. Acceptable reasons do not include a student’s inability to pay tuition on FIT’s due date.

FIT is committed to prohibiting discrimination in its programs, activities, and employment, whether based on race, color, national origin, sex, gender, gender identity, religion, ethnic background, age, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, military service status, genetic information, pregnancy, familial status, citizenship status (except as required to comply with law), or any other criterion prohibited by law. Inquiries regarding the non-discrimination policy may be directed to the Affirmative Action Officer/Title IX Coordinator, 212 217.3360, [email protected].
