Welcome Welcome to the UWA Law School. We congratulate you on being selected to undertake Postgraduate Studies. We look forward to working with you to ensure you enjoy your time with us and gain the maximum benefit from your postgraduate studies. This guide complements the UniStart website http://www.unistart.uwa.edu.au/ and the Law School’s Graduate Diploma and Master Degrees in Law website www.law.uwa.edu.au/students To ensure a smooth transition into postgraduate university life, we encourage you to attend the UWA orientation sessions. This includes the Postgraduate Law Orientations, as well as the University wide Orientation and activities. Orientation is an important element of starting postgraduate study at UWA and events in O-Week offer you a mixture of social and academic activities that will help you settle into postgraduate study. To find out your O Week itinerary, visit the UniStart website. www.unistart.uwa.edu.au/postgrad/orientation About the Law School The UWA Law School is the oldest in Western Australia and the fifth oldest in Australia, the only one in this state which is part of a Group of Eight (Go8) university. The Law School was founded in 1927 with Professor Frank Beasley as the first Chair of Law. Serving for an incredible 36 years, Professor Beasley was initially the only full-time academic on the Law School staff and a close relationship developed with local practitioners and judges who assisted with teaching. This close bond between the profession and the Law School remains today.

From the very beginning the Law School developed a reputation for academic excellence and has continuously offered law degrees leading to qualification to practice since then. The qualifying degree has altered over time in response to changes within legal education and differing student and graduate needs. Most recently, in 2013 the Juris Doctor was introduced as the new professional law degree to better prepare graduates for the challenges of contemporary practice. The Law School now offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and higher degree programs as well as executive education and continuing professional development courses.

A hallmark of the Law School’s success has been the consistently high rates of employment of its graduates, as well as the number of alumni that have gone on to distinguish themselves in a variety of fields. Among the Law School’s alumni are not only judges and Chief Justices, QCs and SCs, barristers, solicitors and academic lawyers, but also Rhodes and Fulbright Scholars, a former Prime Minister, Governor and Senior Australian of the Year, Federal and State Ministers and members of parliament, business leaders and executives, not-for-profit entrepreneurs, public servants, writers, journalists, and social commentators.

As the Law School heads towards its 90th Anniversary it continues to build on this heritage of academic excellence through the provision of a broad range of education programs as well as involvement in research projects with impact. We contribute to our local, national and international communities with the continuing support of alumni and partners and students within the Law School benefit directly from this engagement.

Law School Activities The Law School conducts its research, teaching and community engagement activities across a range of areas. Students benefit directly from staff research projects as information is embedded in various units. Students also benefit from the Law School’s many and varied networks and partners, with visiting and guest presenters in many classes. Current Law School coursework and research students receive regular updates and invitations to our seminar series, public lectures and community engagement events via email. Law Service delivery centre (SDC) The SDC is the first point of contact for all Law students. The Law Support Office team specialises in providing outstanding teaching and learning support. Should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to make an appointment to see a team member on 6488 2945 or email us via the UWA email portal system called askUWA. A team member will be in contact with you within three university days The Law Support Office can be found in the Faculty of Law Administrative Building (3rd building on the left as one enters Hackett Entry 1). Academic dishonesty, including plagiarism, is covered by the University's guidelines on academic conduct. • Cheating in tests or examinations, such as copying from another student, or taking

unauthorised materials into the test or examination room. • Plagiarism is presenting another's work as though it were one's own; for instance, quoting or

paraphrasing someone else's opinions, arguments or research findings, whether published or unpublished, without clear acknowledgement of the source. (No source need be given for commonly accepted matters of fact.)

• Falsifying results of experiments or research studies. • Collusion - for example, writing an assignment jointly and submitting it as the work of one

individual unless it is clearly designated a group project. • Helping someone else to commit any dishonest act such as those listed above.

Timetable Semester based classes may include lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops and pre-class information sessions. Units offered intensively range between 3-5 days only; there are no tutorials outside of the scheduled class dates. Important note: several of our intensive units are offered outside the standard semester. Units are offered during the summer period and BEFORE semester starts; during non-standard teaching periods and during the Winter Vacation break. The unit outline and the online handbook unit webpage are the places to visit for teaching periods, census dates, class dates and venues. handbooks.uwa.edu.au/

Timetabling Tool and Sample Study Plan See the Master’s timetabling tool and sample study plans at the end of this handbook. This is a tool that can be used to create your 2017 Study Plan. It should be read along with the University’s rules for the degree you are enrolled in. http://handbooks.uwa.edu.au/postgraduate-courses

From a Graduate Diploma to a Master’s degree How to articulate from the Graduate Diploma to Masters

a) apply online for the Master degree once you have completed the Graduate Diploma units (do not apply to graduate) and

b) complete and submit an Advanced Standing form to the Faculty. The form is located on the Student Administration website http://www.student.uwa.edu.au/course/forms

Important note: In circumstances where you complete four units of the Graduate Diploma and articulate up to the Masters’ degree, you will only be awarded the Master’s degree – the Graduate Diploma falls away.
