Introduction 2007 has been another good year for Origin South Africa, seeing three major events, two in the Mitchell’s Plain area of Cape Town and one in the city centre at the City Hall. While attendance has not been great at the events, there has been a sense of God’s leading throughout, and the year ended with the move of our Ministry Leader and his wife to Cape Town to spend more time devoted to building up the ministry. We thank God for what has gone before, and look to Him for great things for the future. …that in all things Jesus might have the pre-eminence (Col 1:18).

Events

Praise Night Shekinah Full Gospel Church, Mitchell’s Plain, Sunday 11

th March 2007, 5pm

Speaker: leadership from Shekinah Church An evening of blended praise and worship with the Origin band and singers, assisted by selected brass and string instrumentalists. A group from Origin Scotland joined the choir which was made up of members of several churches from the Northern and Southern suburbs. The event was well-attended and the congregation entered with enthusiasm into the singing and worship.

ALIVE! City Hall, Cape Town, Saturday 17

th March 2007, 7.30pm

Speaker: Rev Trevor Pearce, Anglican Church In celebration of the Resurrection, this Easter-focused event was presented by the Origin singers and band, with selected brass, string and wind instruments. A group from Origin Scotland joined the choir which was made up of members of several churches from the Northern and Southern suburbs. While not very well attended, the event went well, there was a good spirit in the meeting and the performance level was good.

Not Another Silent Night! Shekinah Full Gospel Church, Mitchell’s Plain, Sunday 16

th December 2007, 5pm

Speaker: leadership from Shekinah Church The organization of this event was challenging due to communications difficulties with the host church, and several elements of the programme had to be dropped at the last minute. The choir struggled a little on the day, and attendance was poor due to a clash of events high-profile in the neighbourhood. However, it proved a valuable learning experience, and continued our aim of taking events out to the less economically privileged areas of Cape Town.

Reports

Response Colin Peckham One particular event stands out with regard to the response of the congregations or audiences through the year. The Praise Night at Mitchell’s Plain had without doubt one of the most committed and involved audiences we have ever experienced and was an enormous blessing not only to those in the crowd but also to those on stage. We have also had very positive responses from church leaders through the year, many offering encouraging comments with regard to the ministry, and for that we praise God.

Choir Tanya van Schalkwyk The Origin Choir proved stable in 2007 with a core group of people committed to the 3 events for the year. For all three events the numbers ranged between 25 and 35. For our first two events the choir was strong and soloists full of energy and good singing. Commitment to the rehearsals was good overall. We rehearsed in Rondebosch East to accommodate people from the Northern Suburbs, but these people withdrew in any case, so for the Christmas event we moved our rehearsals back to the Southern Suburbs in the hope of drawing enough people together in the Northern Suburbs to start separate rehearsals there, but this did not materialise this year. This last event at Shekinah was disappointing mostly due to poor attendance and enthusiasm from the congregation. The choir was not as strong during the performance as they were in rehearsal. I believe they were too music-bound during rehearsals and did not memorise their notes and words enough and were therefore not as well prepared to sing without them. The solution to this problem is simply to provide word-only copies as those who can read music become over-dependant on their reading skills and do not exercise their listening skills as much. Those who do not read music are then dependant on others for their notes and are often confused by the music in front of them. Overall though, the choir members are committed and enjoy their rehearsals and singing. It is a good foundation for the future.

Band Garth Airey Overall, the band worked very well for the 2007 events. The membership was largely stable, although we had to bring in a new drummer after our previous one (Jason Gould) left to travel overseas. We have been able to temporarily fill the position, but are aware that there will be several changes in membership next year as existing members move away from Cape Town and have other church commitments. There was a high standard of performance during the year at all three events, and our aim is to work towards that next year too by finding new, talented and committed musicians to take over from those that are about to leave. We continue to trust God to develop us further in our creative ability, and in our service to Him as a band.

Publicity Colin Peckham We have as yet not succeeded in gathering together a series of church reps to promote events in their churches, and as such we struggled to fill the only public event of the year (ALIVE! at the City Hall). We hope over the coming years to be able to devote more thought to publicity and work harder at getting the message out.

Staff Colin Peckham There have been no staff changes during 2007, with the exception of the addition of Norma Peckham to the on-the-ground team in Cape Town.

IT Chris Pitt During 2007, we built what is to become the centralized Origin Church Database (Cape Church Guide (SA) and eventsguide (UK)). While the database is not 100% complete, with newsletter support, financial records and other areas still under development, it is now ready for population with church data.
