The practitioners believe that orishas are often best understood by observing theforces of nature they rule over. The orisha religion affords the believers opportunity tomeetthemanifestingorishasfacetofaceduringawemilere(drummingceremony)whereoneormoreof their priestswill bemounted (possessed) and thenprophesy to those inattendance.

“Wherefore, mydearlybeloved, flee from idolatry” ICorinthians10:14“But I say, thatthe thingswhich theHeathen sacrifice, they sacrifice todemons, andnot toGod,and Iwouldnotthatyeshouldhavefellowshipwithdemons”ICorinthians10:20

The Yoruba are also the most prolific carvers of Africa. Their drumming isrenownedforitsprecision, complicationandintensity.Cultdrummingisdoneonvaried, special instruments consecrated to the different orisha. Praising, summoning andgenerating of force is created by the beating of elaborate variations of characteristicrhythms, combinedwithasecond, thirdandevenafourthdrummingpattern.Drumming, song, dance and carvings–all contribute to praise the orishas. Percussion isacrucialcomponentof thereligion, in that it is thevehicle throughwhichdevoteescommunicatewiththeorishas(deities). For themost important religiousceremonies,anensembleofthreedouble-headedbatadrums isemployedandfrequentlyaugmentedbyanachere(smallgourdrattle).Batadrumsare rituallyconsecratedwherethere is a less rigorousprotocol, other instruments canbeused, such as shekeres (largegourdrattlesthatarestrungwithbeadsorseeds),congadrumsandaguataca(ahoebladeor cowbell played with a striker). Orisha percussion generally accompanies singing inwhichdeities are praised and invited to descend upon their devotees.
