MESSAGE FROM PASTOR SMITH JUNE 2019

CORNERSTONE

We are a gifted people. That is a foundational premise for

how we are to see ourselves, our brothers and sisters in

Christ, and the One, Holy, Christian and Apostolic

Church. We are a gifted people.

When you conjure up in your mind what the word “gifted”

means, I suggest that you not think “fortunate” or “elite”

or “privileged” but rather something quite stronger. While

a strong case could be made that Christians are, properly

understood, all these things what the word “gifted” is

meant to evoke is much more elementary. You are the

possessor of divine gifts! These are exquisite gifts. God

has placed these gifts into your very person. To be sure,

one can either cultivate or ignore these gifts, but we

cannot undo what God has done. You can be a poor

recipient of a good gift. You can have your eyes open to

the splendor of what the Almighty has favored you with.

One path leads to selfishness and shallowness, a pale

semblance of human potential. One path leads to

contentment, inspiration, and a genuine understanding of

the honor which is ours.

Our “giftedness” comes in the form of a humble servant.

The eternal Son of God laid aside all of His divine

prerogatives and took up a wash basin and collectively

washed the feet of humanity. His death and resurrection

have been placed within your soul by the washing with

water and the Word (baptism). Gifted doesn’t even begin

to describe who and what you are! Heaven is your home.

A place at the Marriage Banquet has your name inscribed

on it. The Lord’s holiness is your present possession.

Love cascades around you every time His sweet word

comes to your believing ears. What do you do with a gift

you treasure? You take care of it.

A hallmark of a faithful steward is to take care of what has

been given to him. We do this individually and we do it

corporately. Our church… we take care of it. The

spiritual life of our beloved congregation is taken care of

by how faithfully we honor His Word and incorporate it

into our lives. The physical life of our congregation is

taken care of by how we manage the physical property.

One can get an immediate impression of how we value

what we’ve been given, both spiritually and physically, by

coming onto our campus and participating in the Divine

Service. Our love for God’s Word is strong here at Christ

the King. It shows in how we treat one another in this

place – love abounds. It shows in how we maintain a

beautiful campus – truly beautiful. It shows in how we

align our service with God infallible word, speaking it

with power and clarity, bending our knees in repentance

and rejoicing in the forgiveness that is lavished upon us.

The life of faith is a beautiful life, and it is being lived out

in the saints of Christ the King; it is lived out in our

precious school; it is lived out in the ongoing dynamic of

our Good Shepherd who gathers His sheep and leads them

to green pastures and still waters. We are a gifted people.

Using His gifts aright is both delightful and wise.

Keeping our pride out of the whole thing is imperative,

which is why we “fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and

perfecter of our faith.”

May His name ever be hallowed among us!

Peace be with you,

Pastor Smith

Dearly beloved of Christ the King; The Lord be with you.
