Wade. This award will be bestowed annually to the individual presenting the best case reports at the annual Phase III Clinical Examination, as determined by the objective grading system. For the year 2001, the ABO awarded this honor to Dr Glen Armstrong of Moscow, Idaho. Dr Armstrong is a native of Dallas, Tex, and received his undergraduate degree from North Texas State University and his dental degree from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1974. Upon completion of his dental training, he served in the United States Air Force for 3 years. After his tour of military duty, Dr Armstrong practiced general dentistry in Midland, Tex. While in general practice, Dr Armstrong devel- oped a keen interest in the science of occlusion and furthered his understand- ing of this subject at the Pankey Institute in Florida. After 10 years of general practice, he entered the specialty of orthodontics because of its close associ- ation with both occlusion and esthetics. He received his orthodontic training at the University of Texas-Houston Dental Branch, finishing in 1991. Following his graduation, he purchased a practice in Moscow and moved there with his wife, Barbara, and 2 sons. “This is the greatest honor I have ever received,” Dr Armstrong said. “It’s like winning an Olympic gold medal. And it’s even more meaningful because it’s for the work I do every day.” The ABO presented the award to him on Sunday, May 6 at the College of Diplo- mates of the American Board of Ortho- dontics luncheon in Toronto, Ontario. This luncheon was held in conjunction with the 101st AAO Annual Session. It is of interest to note that, this year, both the Shepard Award of Distinction, for the highest score on the Phase II Writ- ten Examination, and the Wade Award of Clinical Excellence, for the highest score on the Phase III Clinical Examination, were presented to graduates of the Uni- versity of Texas–Houston Dental Branch. THE AMERICAN BOARD OF ORTHODONTICS CERTIFIES 62 ORTHODONTISTS AT PHASE III CLINICAL EXAMINATION HELD IN FEBRUARY The American Board of Orthodon- tics held its annual Phase III Clinical Examination Feb 24 through March 1, 2001, in St. Louis. The ABO certified 62 orthodontists and granted them diplomate status. Successful completion of the Phase III examination is the final step in the ABO’s certification process. This examination tests the candidate’s knowl- edge of clinical orthodontics and provides a basis on which to assess the quality of the candidate’s clinical treatment results. For this examination, the candidates are each required to display 10 case reports from specific categories of malocclusions. 78 candidates. Ninety-five percent ofthe case reports presented were com-plete. Of the 5% that were not complete, only 20 case reports were incompletebecause of occlusion. This resulted in a97% pass rate for occlusion. Theremaining 18 case reports were incom-plete because of specification problems, case management, or incompleterecords. Overall, the candidate pass ratewas 81%. This is the highest pass rate inthe last decade.

For the first time, the ABO adminis-tered only the oral portion of the PhaseIII examination (Board Case RecordOral Examination) to Board-eligible can-didates who were 3 to 5 years into theirBoard eligibility. One hundred twentycandidates passed this oral exam andadded an additional 5 years to their PhaseIII time frame. Four of these candidatespresented their Option II pretreatmentrecords and had them approved. An addi-tional 5 candidates had Option II recordsthat had been previously approved, bringing the total to 9 candidates that arecurrently provisionally certified underBoard guidelines.

The success rate for the model occlu-sion portion of the Phase III examinationhas increased annually for the past 3years. There is a consensus among exam-iners that this may be a result of the objec-tive grading system instituted at the 1999Phase III examination. All prospectivecandidates are supplied with the measur-ing gauge, as well as the measurement cri-teria. If their casts are properly scored, they will know in advance whether or notthe case is acceptable. If the case is scoredcorrectly and is a 20 or below, it will mostlikely pass. If it scores 30 or above, thereis little chance that it will pass. An assess-ment of the 8 criteria evaluated revealedthat tooth alignment, marginal ridges, andbuccolingual inclination, in that order, continue to be the most problematic areasin case management.
