Distress, low mood and worry are the major

mental health problems of the 21st Century and

affect more than one in three of us at some time.

This course has been designed to give easier access

at an affordable cost to an effective Psychological

treatment and doing so in a way that cuts through

jargon.

By empowering users to understand why they feel as

they do, and to learn new ways of improving how they

feel, the course aims to provide ready access to key

information on how to be more confident and happier.

The course uses cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT)

which is an effective and practical way of helping

people tackle common problems such as low mood

and anxiety as well as helping them cope with longer-

term physical health problems.

It aims to provide a range of life skills that are practical

and effective, and is based on “Helping people to help

themselves”. A crucial element is to inform, educate

and teach key life skills.

The course is supported by a series of CBT self-help

workbooks that can be used between the sessions.

They encourage the reader to put what they are

learning into practice, and to stop, think and reflect on

what is being learned.

The course is designed for groups of between 7 and

10 people and is split into 8 one and a half hour

sessions.

There is also a free to use website to compliment the

course at:

www.livinglifetothefull.com

The course is run locally at Ashfield House in Ossett

by Peter Barrett Dip.couns MBACP who has many

years experience of using CBT within a group

process.

Planning a wedding involves skills that you may never

had had reason to use before - you need to be a skilled

manager, negotiator and mediator and be able to take

on the worry and frustrations of arranging what is

probably the most important day of your life.

The first thing that needs to be considered when

planning the ultimate wedding is how much time you

will give yourself for the planning. This is determined by

the date you set for your Wedding Day.

Some weddings can take up to 3-4 months to

prepare for and plan, but some can take much longer

and some need to be planned and arranged in only a

couple of months. The length of time you allow yourself

to plan your wedding will to some extent determine the

type of wedding you can have.

One of the most important factors that go with

planning a wedding is determining who you will be

delegating specific duties to. Many brides have a close

circle of friends and/or family members who are happy

to help out with different duties. Don’t be afraid of

accepting offers of help as it is easy to become

overwhelmed by the sheer number of tasks that need

doing and the responsibilities involved. Here are some

of the various duties that you can hand out:

• Catering - all of the arrangements for the food and

drink

• Invitations and seating arrangements - addressing and

mailing of invitations and the working out of seating

arrangements

• Decorations for the wedding and reception including

flowers, centre pieces, balloons etc

• Music, entertainment and/or DJ

• Bridesmaid and groomsmen gifts and favours

• Gowns and tuxedos

• Bridal showers/bachelor parties - usually the

responsibilities of the chief bridesmaid and bestman

It is usual to have all these things to organise for a

wedding and brides often start to plan their wedding

feeling and organised and wanting to be in control of

everything. The small details can however, quickly add

up to a lot of work and stress. It is very possible to

retain full control whilst delegating certain tasks.

PlanningYour Big

DayWith a bit of

organisation andattention to detail,

planning yourperfect wedding

can be stress-free

Page 20: Ossett & Horbury Review –July/Aug 2010

The secret to retaining control is setting a specific

time period to have all tasks completed after you have

delegated the responsibilities. Creating a to-do list and

time sheet is a great way to do this, checking off tasks as

they are completed.

Regular meetings to discuss the progress of tasks will

help you feel in control and should identify any potential

problems before they become real problems.

Ideally, at least a year is needed to comfortably plan a

wedding but this is not always possible or wanted. For

the purposes of this guide, we are looking at a 12 month

wedding timeline that will certainly make it a little bit

easier to host the wedding of your dreams.

12 months before your wedding day: • Announce the engagement

• Set your wedding date

• Create a budget

• Hire a Wedding Coordinator (optional)

• Start brainstorming ideas and themes

• Compile your wedding guest list, consulting both

families.

• Choose the best man, ushers, bridesmaids and page

boys.

• Book the church or register office. If the location is a

newly licensed venue you will need to provisionally

book the registrar, but you must confirm with them 3

months before the wedding date.

• Make reservations for your Reception area

• Book your wedding cars, photographer and video

company

• Book the reception venue and caterers.

• Investigate and arrange the entertainment for the

reception.

• Start looking for your wedding dress and bridesmaids

dresses. If you plan to have them made book a

designer at least four months ahead of the wedding.

• Book the honeymoon especially if you plan to travel

during peak season.

• Apply for passports, if required

• Consider taking out wedding insurance.

6 months before your wedding day: • Finalise your guest list

• Arrange the hire of any formal wear for the groom,

best man, ushers and the fathers.

• Book your wedding night hotel

4 months before your wedding day:• Meet and confirm arrangements with the minister.

Discuss the service, any readings and your choice of

music

• Book registrar office now if appropriate

• Order or make your wedding stationery such as

invitations (day and evening), orders of service, place

cards, etc.

• Organise and book your wedding flowers. It may be

worth contacting other couples who are getting

married the same day to see if you can share the cost

of the flowers for the church.

• Choose and order your wedding rings

• Order your wedding cake. Check with the reception

venue if you will need to supply a cake stand and knife.

3 months before your wedding day: • Confirm the wedding music with minister

• Finalise your honeymoon plans and check for any visas

or vaccinations that may be necessary. If the bride

plans to change here name have the passport name

changed now so they are the same as the travel

documents, forms can be obtained from the Post

Office

• Shop for your honeymoon and going away clothes

• Place your wedding list with stores of your choice

2 months before your wedding Day:• Send out your wedding invitations at least six weeks

before the wedding. Have your wedding present list

ready for people who ask for it.

• If presents are sent to you before the wedding send a

thank you letter now.

• Ensure guests have details of local accommodation

• Choose your presents for the best man, ushers,

bridesmaids and mothers.

• Make final alterations and fittings for the bridal gown

and groomswear

1 month before your wedding day: • Any late invitation replies should be chased up to

enable you to finalise the guest list. Work out the

seating plan and write out the place cards.

• Check that the wedding clothes will be ready on time

(they need to be ready at least one week before).

• Bride to visit the hairdresser to discuss what style is

required and to book final appointment. Don't forget

to take the brides wedding head-dress if appropriate.

• Check all transportation has been arranged and check

the journey time to the church.

• Order money for the honeymoon.

• Notify banks, gas, insurance companies etc if bride

planning to change her name.

wedding day

• Make an appointment with a beauty salon for the day

of the wedding

change, if any.

• Discuss final details with the reception site and the

caterer

1-2 weeks before your wedding day: • Final checks on the honeymoon arrangements. Check

A midsummer Wilde sceneWilliam Shakespeare famously claimed that “all the world’s

a stage”, and Wakefield Council is taking heed of the

playwright’s adage this summer with a series of outdoor

theatre productions at Woolley Hall.

As part of the Council’s Summer of Culture, Woolley Hall –

in association with Heartbreak Productions – will be raising

the curtain on the summer sun by hosting a trio of shows

in its picturesque Italian Gardens.

A bar and refreshments will be available for thirsty

theatregoers – and if you fancy a side order of picnic food

with your performance, you will be able to bring your own

goodies into the beautiful gardens.

Cllr David Dagger, cabinet member for culture, said: “The

Summer of Culture promises to be a fantastic way of

providing activities and events for people all across the

district, and these outdoor performances will be particularly

enjoyable in the upcoming warmer months. The shows will

be a great day out for everyone from families to youth

groups in the grounds one of Wakefield’s finest venues.”

Tickets for the shows are priced at £14 for adults and £7

for children in advance. For more information or to book
