Osteoporosis is a condition that causes bones to become thin and brittle, and leads to an increased risk of fracture (broken bones). It is known as a silent disease because bone loss occurs without symptoms and many don’t know they have it until they experience their first fracture.
Dr. Alexandra Papaioannou, a leading geriatrician at Hamilton Health Sciences, advises people over 50 to speak to their family physician and to watch for the warning signs of osteoporosis. “The common signs and symptoms of osteoporosis include height loss, wrist fracture or a broken hip after a fall.”
Four Key Risk Factors for Fractures Related to Osteoporosis:
Low bone mineral density (BMD) Prior fragility fracture Age Family history of osteoporosis
