Karshapana, 1.64g, Obv: four Symbols, ABBB pattern. This unique symbol pattern is known in no other series (Mitc Anct# Vol-I). Extremely fine, extremely rare.

Erich was a minor Janapada of Pre-Mauryan times, whose coins were not known till recently. The site is also known from a number of varieties of copper coinage, some varieties having the janapada name inscribed on them. Erich lied on a very important trade route connecting Kaushambi with Ujjaini and might have been a small but important trade centre in those times. Annexed by Magadha at around 330 BC.

9 Punch Marked Coins, Panchala Janapada, Silver 1½

Shana, 1.96g, single symbol type. Geometrical mark. The present coin represents the earliest phase of this janapada and is clearly comparable with the contemporary coinage of Malla Janapada (Rjgr S# 72). The later phase coinage of Panchala is slightly lower in weight and significantly smaller in size. (Rjgr S# 73, Type 1160). Very fine, rare.

Panchala was a very ancient janapada, finding multiple references in Mahabharata. Draupadi, the wife of Pandavas was the princess of Panchala and hence, also known as 'Panchali'. The janapada also finds mention in Jatakas, Divyavadan and is also listed as one of the 16 janapadas of the times of Buddha, in Anguttara Nikaya. Assimilated in Magadha at around 350 BC.

Estimate: ` 1,500-1,700

10 Punch Marked Coins, Kuru/Pauravas of Kaushambi,

Silver 1½ Shana, 2.06g, Obv: two symbols, AB pattern. One of the rarest series having second official symbol, which could be same or different from the main symbol, but always smaller in size, this feature is shared by only the Mallas of Kusinagar and probably also by the Shakya of Vaishali in some recorded cases: both these people being contemporary to Buddha (Mitc Anct# Vol-I). Very fine+, extremely rare.Pauravas were a line of famous Kuru dynasty of Hastinapur and settled on the north of Ganga river near Kaushambi. Panchala, Kosala and Magadha were their close neighbours. Their independence was lost at around 335 BC at the hands of Nandas, who assimilated them into a growing Magadhan empire.

Estimate: ` 6,000-6,500

11 Punch Marked Coins, Magadha Janapada, Silver

Karshapana, 3.29g, Obv: five Symbol Coin, ABCDE

pattern. Three Human figures i.e. two males and a female punched with separate punches, Tree in Railing and Elephant over a Srivatsa/tortoise (Gpt/Hdkr# S-VII, Var-586). Extremely fine, very rare. This is a unique Series of Magadha that does not depict Sun and Six Armed Symbol, the hall-marks of Magadhan punchmarked coinage. This extra-ordinary feature suggests these issues being from some particular mint and/or disruptions in political lineage of later Mauryas, hence extremely important from historical view point.

Estimate: ` 2,000-2,200

H U JB

12 Punch Marked Coins, Magadha Janapada, Silver

Karshapana, 3.12g, Obv: five Symbol Coin, ABCDE pattern. Six-armed symbol, Sun, Puppy with taurines around, Palm Tree and TwoTaurines/Dotted Circle symbol. This is a re-struck coin suggesting that an earlier issued coin was used to issue a new set of symbols marked on reverse side of old coin, thus making it a double obverse coin (Gpt/Hdkr# S-III, Var-306). Extremely fine, rare. This type, on the basis of a few conclusive hoard evidences (viz. Bhir hoard) is attributed to the Nanda Dynasty of Magadha and was in circulation at the time when Alexander the Great invaded India. Extremely Important for internal numismatic chronology.

Estimate: ` 2,500-2,800
