Community Relations:

● BHPD held a bike helmet safety for grades k-3 on 5/28/19 ● Steered Straight assembly for parents and students on 4/30 ● PEEC 4/15-17 grade 7 was a HUGE success ● Phillies weather education day on 5/16 for grades 2 & 8. ● Minding your Mind assembly on 5/14. ● Mayor’s ‘Walk and Talk’ on 5/15.

State Testing: State testing has been completed in grades 3-8 in the areas of language arts and math. Grades 3 and 8 have also completed science testing. The lower wing, grades 3-4, utilized the Chrome Books while the upper wing, grades 5-8, utilized the Macbooks. The Chrome Books seemed more compatible with the technology components of the testing system. Our tech consultants from Point Boro made themselves available to us during the entire testing window and were instrumental in fixing our technology glitches. Overall our students appeared to be confident and conscientious during the sessions. Our staff was quite flexible and accommodated the needs of our school population whether it was regarding scheduling, providing separate sessions, administration of make up testing, or maintaining a quiet atmosphere in the building. Technology (Point Pleasant Boro):

● Technology team responds swiftly to any ‘trouble tickets’, and is visible and available daily at BHS.

● NJSLA testing was successful with the support of the Boro technology team. Data and State Reporting (Trainor):

● Statement of Assurance Para SOA (Use of Para Staff) ● Performance Reports Submission (NJSmart) ● SSDS Submission - Student Safety Data System

Day to Day Happenings at BHS Kindergarten (Wisliceny): Kindergarten has been very busy and we don't want this year to come to an end! Recent highlights include writing poems about spring and cinquain poems about frogs. We continue to write in our journals daily and we're currently creating our very own yearbooks. We love to read, whether we're seesaw reading in partners or silently reading with our whisper phones, we love recognizing all of our sight words and learning new ones everyday! In math we're learning about place value and the number 100 doesn't scare us! We planted tomato plants for our Mothers and still enjoy welcoming guest readers each Friday afternoon. The end of May will find us visiting the Cape May Zoo and preparing for our promotion on June 11th!

First Grade (Lewis): We are ready for 2nd grade!!!! It's been a great year learning how to be a hard working student and learning how to be kind and respectful to others! A super thank you to Mrs. C, Mrs. Toohey, and all the children for the book, "Mr. David Lewis", that they wrote me, so awesome......thank you!!

Second Grade (Califano): The end of the year is quickly approaching and 2nd graders have been so busy. The class just wrapped up a unit on Folktales and Fairytales and we will be putting on two plays for our parents. The students have been working very hard on memorizing their lines and they cannot wait to perform! They have learned all about our country's beginnings and how we came to be the United States of America. We teamed up with the 8th graders and learned about clouds and how the weather affects baseball games. Each group made their own cloud in a jar, then created a weather meme. Then, we went to Citizens Bank Park to attend Weather Education Day as well as watch a few innings of a Phillies baseball game. The kids and I agree that it is such a fun and educational experience! The 2nd graders also went to the Franklin Institute where we learned about many different aspects of science. Everyone was thrilled to go into a Coast Guard boat and helicopter on our school's First Responders' Day. We even got to meet the sweetest police dog. The Peer Leaders have visited our classroom twice to talk about "bucket filling" and how being kind to others is so important. They learned that you should be a bucket filler instead of a bucket dipper. To celebrate Autism Awareness Day, Mr. Camardo read the class a book about a girl who has autism. Then, everyone helped to create a hallway display to spread autism awareness. The whole school paired up with Positive Partners, having lunch, playing at recess, then decorating kindness rocks last week. My students always look forward to spending time with their Positive Partners and they all designed awesome rocks! We all look forward to Blue and Gold Day as well as all of our end of the year fun. I can't believe the school year will be over so soon!

Third Grade (Kiss): They thought they were voting for a class book when in fact they were secretly selecting their own reading groups! They have been enjoying the adventures of Clementine, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, and Jake Drake Know-It-All. In addition to reading stories, they have also been working on writing their own stories individually and with a partner. We are quickly approaching the publication of their Team Tales. Over the last few months they have enjoyed a Trip to the Pinelands with the fourth grade, learning about animals in nature and how to identify and track animals native to NJ. They have also enjoyed working on a science lab, based on 3rd and/or 4th grade standards, once a month with fourth grade. Third grade combines what they have learned in our classroom with what fourth grade has learned in theirs. Together the mixed grades collaborate to solve science mysteries, at times having one grade teach the other (based on the standard the lab covers), or when the standards are ones that overlap, work to build upon what both grades know to come to a solution. The last few months have had us exploring family traits, dinosaurs and creating homes strong enough to withstand strong winds like that of a tornado or hurricane. Both classes look forward to these labs as they get to share/show what they know.

As we head into the last few weeks we will be planting in the garden, finishing up fossils in Science and looking into weather and the patterns they create, exploring perimeter and taking a sneak peek into 4th grade Math concepts, writing persuasive pieces in Writer's Workshop, enjoying one more class book once our individual group books are finished and enjoying a few more poems to finish out all of the types of poetry in our curriculum. Fourth Grade (O’Connor): Students have been working tremendously hard over the course of the marking period making strides across all subjects. In Language Arts, we finished a historical fiction unit in which we read the novel “Number the Stars”. During this unit, students broke up into groups and created their own dialogue to put into our very own play. The students practiced and mastered their roles as we went into the gym and performed for the 7th grade. After we finished performing we were able to break up into groups combining 7th and 4th graders while they discussed different quotes and points from the novel. It was a great time to collaborate the two classes as the 7th grade was finishing their Holocaust studies which was the setting of our novel. It was a wonderful learning experience for both classes and the students really enjoyed working with each other. In Social Studies, we have made our way across all the different regions of the United States, learning about the different climates, land, natural resources, and history of each. Students are learning about the 21 counties of New Jersey now as well as the history of our state. In Science, we just finished learning about different natural disasters. Students presented their own research projects on a specific natural disaster and presented it to the class in a form of a Google slide presentation. In Math, we have worked our way through the entire series and are currently taking a step up into 5th grade to prepare for some concepts and skills the students will be moving into next year. The students also completed a fun project with which they were given a budget and directed to go on vacation and spend their money on different things. They were very engaged in this project as they loved having the idea of their own money to do whatever they wanted. They also found out that budgeting money can be difficult and is an important skill to learn. Fifth Grade (Monticello): Fifth grade is currently reading The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. The girls are completely consumed by the content and how Anne has written her account of the time she spent in hiding. The group is also riveted by the world history of the time and have all independently taken it upon themselves to look deeper into specific topics that have been presented in the diary. In Social Studies we are learning about Washington, Jefferson and Franklin and the significance they had in the early government of our country. We are also learning about the Constitution and

how the US government functions. The class worked in groups to create and collaborate on Google Slides presentations about Washington, Jefferson & Franklin and presented them successfully. The students continue to do really well with the GoMATH! program and are currently working on fractions, measurements & conversions. Students also are using IXL to enhance their learning in all subject areas. NJSLA testing went well and we've completed all required assessments. Our class trip to Trenton is scheduled for this Thursday and we are looking forward to a great time. We've also enjoyed the time we got to spend with our Positive Partners to have lunch and do a craft together. It's hard to believe that the school year is coming to an end!

Resource Room (Mrs. Peters): Language Arts/ Math Resource Room The 4th grade language arts class requested we read the sequel to the The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies. We have just begun The Lemonade Crime, which continues where The Lemonade War ended. We are hoping this novel answers some of the burning questions we had after finishing the first book. This novel involves sibling rivalry, using good business practices, and the importance of honesty. The grade 6 language arts class just finished reading the novel Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. This novel touched on eternal life, supporting those you care about, and making difficult decisions. A student was extremely disappointed in the ending because various characters became separated. As a culminating activity, we will be rewriting the ending so the characters will be able to stay in each other’s lives. My 8th grade language arts class has been working on graduation speeches along with reading the novel, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. In this classic story, groups of teenagers deal with the

conflicts created by their socioeconomic differences. This story emphasizes the divide between the rich and poor and the choices that change their lives. School Counselor (Phelps): We have been super busy with Peer Leaders, classroom lessons, Positive Partner activities, presentations, lunch groups, standardized testing, and individual meetings. To begin, our Peer Leader Program has been very successful. The Peer Leaders have been conducting all of the prospective student tours; nothing is more impressive than a student who clearly values his or her own school. We trained with practice tours and they become pros by touring during our Saturday open house as well as numerous tours scheduled during the school day. Our Tour Leaders were unbelievably positive and self-assured and should be credited for enticing all of the new students who have enrolled for next year! In addition, we elected three student representatives from our Peer Leader group to present to the School Improvement Committee and they discussed the core items that they believe will make our school community an even better place. Our Peer Leaders also assisted me in the Kindergarten through second grade classrooms by providing two character education classes to each grade, one in April and one in May, in an effort to promote respect, caring, and citizenship. Once again, the power of learning through the older students is priceless and both the older and younger students reported loving this new program. Select Peer Leaders will also meet with the fifth grade class to discuss the transition to middle school with the goal of reducing concerns and building confidence. With the goal of expanding our Positive Partner activities, I added a Positive Partner lunch, recess, and ‘Friendship Rocks’ craft this month. Students joined their partner for lunch allowing the students to form a tighter bond and the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company. During recess, students partnered to complete a list of 25 activities that generated teamwork and a lot of laughs. Following the lunch/recess, the older students went to the elementary wing to create ‘Kindness Rocks’ whereby they wrote inspirational messages and images on rocks in permanent marker which will be waterproofed and put in our new “Kindness Rocks” rock garden in the front of the school. Additionally, we had a Minding Your Mind assembly for the 6-8th grade students to open up a conversation about anxiety and mental health. A young adult from the program joined us in the cafeteria to discuss his journey with anxiety and the importance of asking for help, self-care, and giving back to the community to promote self-confidence and awareness. Point Pleasant Beach High School is also involved with the Minding Your Mind and they plan to continue the conversation in high school.

Furthermore, I have completed 12 weeks of online courses on Mindfulness allowing us to officially become a Mindful School. I have begun to use mindfulness to reduce stress and anxiety among BHS students both individually and in group settings. We have discussed the importance of controlling reactions, focusing awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. Some of the lunch groups have expanded to include Mindfulness activities while in others I have promoted effective communication skills, social skills, and general stress reduction. As always, I am available for individual counseling and offer support to many of our students. Time has flown by and we are all surprised that the school year is already coming to a close. I wish the eighth graders the utmost success in high school and know that they will soar. I am so grateful to play a role at Bay Head School by counseling, supporting, and teaching our students, and I look forward to another amazing year next year. I am truly proud to be a Shark!!!

AAE Advanced Academics & Enrichment (Ms. Meyer): BSI (Basic Skills Instruction): Due to NJ-SLA and Spring ’19 AimsWeb assessments, the usual BSI schedule has been on hiatus this month. By the end of the year, however, BSI student reports will be complete and sent home to parents which will include performance level and rate of improvement for each student. We are ending our school year with 21 students receiving BSI in grades K-5. The AimsWeb data collected this month will help inform decisions related to BSI for fall. On 5/29 and 5/30 I’ll be attending a 2 day training workshop in Just Words, a “highly explicit, multisensory decoding and spelling program for students in grades 4–12 and adults who have mild to moderate gaps in their decoding and spelling proficiency but do not require intensive intervention. The program is designed for students with below-average decoding and spelling scores and should be combined with other literature-rich programs.” Just Words was recommended by Ms. Wills and Mr. Camardo to be used with BSI students in grades 4 & 5

Page 18: Ot he r OOD - 1...Principal Report Bay Head School District 145 Grove Street Bay Head, NJ 08742 (732) 892-0668 M E M O RANDUM F O R: B oar d of E d u c ati on : B e nj a m i n Hi nds

starting next year, and I would gladly turnkey what I learn at this training to the BSI teachers in grades 6-8. AAE (Advanced Academics & Enrichment): Due to NJ-SLA and Spring ’19 AimsWeb assessments, the usual AAE schedule has been on hiatus this month. Before the hiatus, the 15 AAE students in grades K-5 worked on critical thinking, deductive reasoning, general knowledge, and literature analysis by participating in “Stories With Holes,”, “The Test of General Knowledge,” and a unit on nursery rhymes, fairy tales, or magazines. PEP (Pupil Enrichment Program): PEP classes are (time & schedule-wise) the most ideal time to complete COGAT assessments, so the PEP class content has been more heavily focused on the “T” in STEAM (technology) the past few weeks. Before COGATs, student activities were geared to M (Math) with the creation of inside-out geometry books, and S (Science) with the Mystery Science exploration that asked, “Where did pizza come from?” and inspired students to make (and eat) their own personal pizzas. COGATs: When COGAT assessments are complete (3 sections each of Verbal, NonVerbal and Quantitative reasoning skills) for students in K-5, the reports generated will be shared with classroom teachers and put in student files. Reports are available to parents upon request, and I’ve already been in contact with some parents. The information from COGATs is just another tool in helping teachers differentiate instruction for the students. Cogat.com also provides individual, specific tips and strategies for how to best tap into the strengths and weaknesses for each specific student- another great resource that is available to help engage all students. Also, COGAT scores are one (of many) criteria used for identification of AAE students. AimsWeb: Ms. Molly Mechler, the BSI teacher at Antrim School, visited to observe our use of AimsWeb Plus, as Antrim is considering upgrading their current assessment software to AimsWeb Plus. We were able to share professional development tips with each other related to not only AimsWeb, but to the whole Basic Skills Instruction program structure. When AimsWeb assessments are complete for all students in K-5, the data will be shared with Mr. Camardo and with classroom teachers. This data provides not only a performance level but also provides the rate of improvement for each student in comparison to the national rate of improvement. This information has proved helpful as another tool in evaluating instructional strategies and in determining BSI or AAE eligibility.

Health/PE (Speelman): In PE we are finishing our end of year fitness tests. Im impressed with the students efforts! We are also getting ready for Field Day. Should have a schedule ready by Friday.

Vocal/Instrumental Music: (Espinosa): All grades are focusing on touching up their music for the Spring Concert. Grade 3 is working on learning their solfege syllables, and assigning them to notes on the staff. Grade 8 is learning their graduation piece on the handbells. Guitar club is working on two songs for the Spring Concert, both singing and playing on guitar. Band and select vocal students have the IPlay America trip tomorrow, May 29. (Pictures to follow) Pre-Algebra/Algebra I (Wills): Pre-algebra and Algebra are working on linear relationships. Students in Pre-algebra are writing equations with variables on both sides and using different properties, while Algebra is focusing on solving systems (more than one bivariate equation) of equations.

Nurse/Health Office (Sierotko): The Spring has been a super exciting time and I can’t believe the end of the year is already upon us! I have been busy working in the Health office to complete all the Health screenings and sending referrals home when necessary. On May 9th, Kevin Fogarty, a Registered Nurse from Jersey Shore Hospital, came in to speak to the 4th-8th graders about helmet safety. His message was powerful, as he talked about real cases he has seen in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit from bicycle accidents. He brought helmets for any students that did not have one, and made sure they all understood the proper way to wear the helmet and make sure it fits correctly. I feel very lucky to have attended this year’s PEEC trip with our 7th grade class. It was such a great opportunity to watch the students “disconnect” and enjoy their time together while they learned about orienteering, stream ecology, animals, and all wildlife.
