Well, the school year is over. It sure went byfast, didnt it? It seems that time moves faster

as you age- or perhaps we move slower as weage. In any case, it was a remarkable year forUnicoi County High School athletics. With allthe pomp and ceremony rightfully accordedthe Class AA State Champion Lady Devils,Cameron Millers accomplishments at state inthe decathlon have been overshadowed. Thistalented young man who also led the BlueDevils basketball team to glory the past twoyears is a gifted, determined decathlete whodemonstrated his prowess and versatility atMurfreesboro by nishing second in the decathlon- 10 track and eld events that haveturned many men into jelly. Thad Higgins and Harrison Becker made ne showingsin the pole vault at state and that is a tribute not only to the athletes but to head coach

Randy Brewer and his ne staff. Also lost in the shufe was the tennis team, under the direction of head coachMichael Smith and his assistant, Eric Campbell. The boys team went undefeated inconference play to earn a surprising conference title and battled to within a couple ofpoints of going to sub-state. Many, myself included, thought it would be the girls yearto earn conference honors but they did nish second to a good Elizabethton team. Ofcourse, freshman Reed Jackson had an excellent season-winning district and regionalsingles titles before being eliminated at state. Keep your chin up Reed, youll beback at state. Also, the ladies doubles team of Lacey Harris-Vanessa Bryant defeatedteammates Mary Beth Shults-Lyndsey Pate for the district title. So, you see UnicoiCounty is more than just a basketball-baseball-softball school. The lesser sports, assome call them, are creeping up in stature and it is good to see.

To back track for a moment, I have a bone to pick with some brethren in myprofession. In the recent Sweet 16 Softball Team selections that were printed last

Friday in the Johnson City Press, it was noted that Unicoi Countys Kara Woods wasselected as Player of the Year and that is ne. But, with a season for the ages: 44-4 with472 strikeouts- Woods was denied being selected as Pitcher of the Year. That selectionwent to Elizabethtons Taylor Belessa. She had a ne year, especially in the wake ofKadie Robinson being injured but 44 wins is 44 wins. Guys, if major league pitcherscan win both the Cy Young and MVP awards, high school players can be doubly

Despite being a center onchampionship Blue Devil basketballteams as well as a member of aconference champion tennis squad,it is football that gave Adams hisfondest memory.

Getting to go to the playoffs infootball my sophomore year is myfavorite memory, Adams said.

Adams sister, Destinie Hayes, and two brothers, Nick Adamsand Zachary Dellinger, were inattendance. His Father, MichaelAdams, and his stepfather, AllenMitchell, were unable to attend.

Shortly thereafter, MikaylaTreadway, shortstop on the Class AAState Champion Lady Devil softballteam, realized her dream of playingDivision I softball by signing toattend ETSU, where she will be

playing along side Whitley Hensley. Whitley and I are excited to be

    playing together again, Treadwaysaid.

Treadway will be playing foran up-and-coming program that, under the direction of head coachAndrea Mangrum, compiled a 27-28

overall record this season, 6-14 in theAtlantic Sun Conference.

For Treadway, Mangrum was akey factor in her decision.

I like coach Mangrum, Treadwaysaid. She is a good coach I have

been to all her camps. Plus, beingclose to home was also a factor.

honored as well. Bellessa deserved to be honoredon your pitching staff but Woods was undoubtedlynot only the player of the year but deserved to behonored as pitcher of the year as well.

It wouldnt polite if I failed to mention the BlueDevils baseball team. After all, in the wake of theladies triumph at Murfreesboro, the Blue Devilsfought, scrapped and battled to a 24-12 recordbefore falling to Knox Catholic in the Sectionalgame. They were a talented bunch that overcameseveral obstacles and injuries to key personnel.

Several seniors signed to attend college: WhitleyHensley and Mikayla Treadway will be teammatesagain at ETSU. Elizabeth Raby will take her surerst basemans mitt to Agnes Scott College while

Ali Gardner will battle under the boards at Milligan.Bobby Smith will patrol the outeld at Milliganwhile Brandon Adams will be donning the shoulderpads at Maryville College. Good luck to all and Ilook forward to hearing about your achievements.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the UCHSClass of 2009. Whether you are an athlete or not isirrelevant. Patty, were equally pleased with the results.I am very excited, Doug said. I love the

idea of her playing close to home and for coachMangrum.

For Patty, this day was a longtime coming. It is a day after eleven years that we wanted

for her, Patty said. She wanted it as much as wedid. I dont have words to describe how I feel.

Treadways head coach Grady Lingerfelt waspleased as could be for one his key players.

I am really thrilled about her having theopportunity to play at a division I school,Lingerfelt said. She was going to walk on butthey managed to come up with some scholarshipmoney. She is a ne young lady and was a

key leader on the team. ETSU doesnt knowwhat kind of a kid they are getting she is aworkaholic.

Lingerfelt and assistants Bob Presser and LisaBaxter had a profound inuence on Treadway.

Coach Grady, Lisa and Bob treated me likeI was one of their daughters, Treadway said. They couldnt have treated me any better.

A lead-off hitter, Treadway was a table setterfor a potent Lady Devil offense-hitting a robust.450 while driving in 26 runs, scoring 52 runsand stealing 16 bases in helping to lead UnicoiCounty to a state title. Treadway plans to be apre-med major. Her brother, Trent, grandmother,

Louise Treadway and uncle Jonny Cox were inattendance.

The Unicoi Blue Sox traveling team won the Fourth Annual Tribe Classic Tournament at Domtar Parkon Sunday, May 31. The tournament was for ages 13 and under. Pictured, left to right, in the frontrow are team members Lucas Hensley, Conly Shults, Stephen McLeon and Conner Simpson; backrow, coach Paul Green, Ryan Lingerfelt, Austin Green, Ethan Rice, coach Alan Lingerfelt, MatthewLingerfelt, Will Shelton, Garrison Dula and coach Teddy Rice.

Both teams stranded runners in the eighthbut failed to score.

Saturday, May 30 vs. VolunteerIt would be another tie this day. The score

was a nal 4-4 after eight innings as theFalcons rebounded from a 4-0 hole to denyUnicoi County its second win.

Tolley and Seth Whitson each scored a runin the rst and fourth innings, respectively.Bircheld and Van Hoy scored in the sixthon bases loaded walks to give startingpitcher Austin Arrowood a 4-0 lead. But,

the Falcons scored three times in the sixthinning as Van Hoy came on to relieveArrowood. The Falcons scored the tying runon a passed ball.

    Sunday, May 31 vs. DavidCrockett

It would be a 3-0 loss for Unicoi Countybut it would be a solid performance byHunter Goddard who, despite giving up atwo run rst inning home run, would holda potent Pioneers offense to just one run therest of the game as he kept them off balancewith his breaking ball.

Goddard struck out two batters , walkedone, hit one batter, scattered ve hits andgave up three earned runs.

The Blue Devils could manage just fourhits: Jones, Hilliard and D.W. Whitson eachsingled. Rice doubled.
