Dear Friends,

Rapid City and the surrounding communities are starting to ask questions:“What’s going on at Fountain Springs Community Church?” Just the other day I had a conversation that went something like this, “David, I don’t know much about Christians, and I’m not a fan of religion, but I was drawn to the church and I don’t want to leave.” Others have said, “This church just felt like home,” and, “The presence of God is undoubtedly here.” We have story after story that carry those same themes over and over.

God is doing incredible things in the lives of individuals. God is using Fountain Springers to do His saving work. Just in the past couple of years, I have witnessed marriages restored from dark moments. Folks who used to call themselves atheists and church-haters, now call themselves “Fountain Springers.”

The growth we are seeing with our eyes doesn’t even

compare to the spiritual growth occurring in the lives of our church community. Folks are looking at their work lives as a way to honor God. Folks are looking at their parenting as a way to serve the Heavenly Father. Folks are looking at their resources as opportunities to be obedient to the Lord.

I believe the greatest years for FSCC are still to come. The Black Hills has been, is, and will continue to be influenced by our great church. God wants us to reach out to the community in tangible, powerful ways so that thousands of people can know Jesus Christ as their Savior. Katy, the kids and I are so blessed to be Fountain Springers. God is obviously using this church and it is so fulfilling to have the Creator guiding our steps.

Believing in you & our great God,Rev. David KinnanLead Pastor

Greetings Fountain Springers,

As co-chairs of the Build Up Reach Out capital campaign, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on where we have been and where we hope to be as an evolving church body. It was not that long ago that the idea of having to expand our walls because of unprecedented growth was an exciting idea, yet a possibility that seemed fairly distant. As God has continued to bless our church we are met with a challenge that He has set before us — the challenge of not only handling our growth, but also continuing to reach out to those that need Him.

We have been privileged to meet with many of you in homes, in small groups, and at church. Each of those occasions has been an opportunity to discuss the history, vision, and future of Fountain Springs, as well as how our expansion plans help satisfy the challenges we face.

On May 2nd, every Fountain Springer will have an opportunity to respond to an incredible moment. The impact God desires to have on the Black Hills involves a church that we all now know as “our church”. Without a hint of doubt, this church believes if we build up, God will most definitely use us to reach out to our community.

We are thankful for the many volunteers who have donated countless hours in leading us through this campaign — your work is a blessing to us all. As we set our eyes on Commitment Sunday, we share the excitement of many who we have talked with already. This is a contagious excitement of knowing we are paving the road to embrace the challenge set before us — a challenge to continue to reach out to those that need to know Him. What an incredible opportunity! Thank you for joining us.

A Sent CommunityOur vision is to live out our calling to be a sent com-

munity, a community of believers whose mission is to fervently love God and people with the purpose of helping everyone be a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ. We believe God is calling us to be an integral part of our community and has challenged us to touch the lives of 10 percent or more of those in and around Rapid City.

Fountain Springs Community Church was founded in 1982 and has matured into a vibrant and growing community of over 450 Christ-followers. We are seeing the Spirit at work as people come to know and recognize our God and commit themselves to fulfilling His plan for their lives.

Challenges for GrowthOver the past two years, weekly worship attendance

has more than doubled as more and more people are called to join Fountain Springs each week. This dynamic growth has stretched the capacity of our church facilities. We have responded as creatively and flexibly as we can, creating ad hoc classroom space for our children and teenagers, gathering for meetings in one another’s homes, maintaining office and meeting space in the former parsonage, and providing off-site parking. These solutions are only short-term remedies for our acute lack of space.

If we are going to remain open to further expansion of our ministries, our facility needs to encourage growth, not impede it. We need room to accommodate increasing worship attendance, create suitable spaces to minister to our children and youth, and provide areas to encourage informal fellowship.

Build Up Reach Outunder the guidance of the Board of Elders and the

Building Committee, we have proposed a facility plan that would address our most immediate needs. This expansion would add 30,000 sq. ft., enabling us to add eight dedicated classrooms, provide appropriate childcare and education facilities, alleviate crowding in our gathering areas, and nearly double sanctuary seating. We would also add additional on-site parking.

We are preparing for a special fundraising campaign to make this plan a reality. The success of the Build up Reach Out capital campaign will provide a down payment for our building project, with additional resources coming from financing from our denomination, contributed labor, and weekly giving. Our preliminary cost estimate for con-struction is $4.6 million, and we have set a financial goal of $1 million raised over three years for our campaign.

The UrgencyCurrent facilities impact our ability to fulfill our vision

for Fountain Springs Community Church and are a barrier to continued expansion of our ministry. The concerns with our lack of space grow more acute month by month. Meeting this challenge by expanding our building will help us sustain our growth, minister to our children and youth more effectively, encourage greater fellowship, and enable us to be a greater resource for our community.

Fountain Springs means many things to me, but most importantly it made Rapid City feel like home. Fountain Springs supported me in learning to become a parent. Kids Rock welcomed my shy, scared Spanish-speaking daughter and loved her. Now a little over a year later, I have an outgoing, loving daughter who talks about God and bible stories every day. She is learning bible verses, and so am I for the first time in my life. Now that God has blessed me to help in the AWANA program, I look forward to helping other families fill that lost place in their hearts.~ Kim Wierzchowski

Lobby & Gathering AreasOur lobby and kitchen are inadequate for a congregation of our size and activity. Plans call for a new lobby at the main entrance to the church as well as a larger kitchen, a reception/ resource center, and a coffee bar.

NurseryDirectly off the lobby will be separate spaces for infant and toddler care with a shared check-in area and secured entrances.

Classrooms & Large Group SpacesThe new basement will house eight classrooms and two large group gathering areas. These will primarily serve our children’s ministries by providing age-specific classrooms for Sunday school classes and space for children’s worship and AWANA.

SanctuaryRelocating the lobby, classrooms, and nursery enables us to remove temporary walls in our sanctuary to nearly double seating for our shared worship.

Youth SpaceWe plan to repurpose large group space currently behind the sanctuary stage for our youth ministry. youth currently meet in the basement of the church office – a space too small to serve the number of teens involved in our ministries, confusing to find for new members, and disconnected from the daily life of the church.

Parking LotPlans call for adding approximately 50 additional parking spaces, an increase of 50 percent.

Benefits of participating

n The campaign provides an opportunity to ask ourselves, “How might God use me and my resources to strengthen His Kingdom?”

n Participation in the campaign gives each of us an opportunity to be part of a total church effort and to increase our connection to the church family.

n your support will help sustain the mission and ministry of Fountain Springs for years to come.

Financial sacrificesEach of us is tasked with prioritizing how to spend the resources God provides. For many of us, making an extra gift to support the capital campaign will involve sacrificing other priorities and luxuries in our lives over the next three years.

Examples:n Avoiding one coffee purchase each week ..$500

n Eating out one fewer time each month with your family ...............................$2,000

n Canceling cable television ...........................$3,000

n Delaying the purchase of a new car. ........$20,000

Bui

ldR

each

Please take time to consider the following as you reflect on your potential support of Fountain Springs’ capital campaign.

n Take time in prayer as you discern what God might ask of you in this campaign.

n Fountain springs asks each of us to consider a sacrificial gift. We are all aware of the need to provide for our current members, and even more, those who will follow us.

n Bear in mind that each gift, regardless of size, will be an important contribution to the campaign.

n Discuss your family’s participation and what it will mean to you with all members of your household.

Remember that any support for the capital campaign should be in addition to your annual support for our ministry budget, not in place of your weekly giving.

During a typical week, more than 150 children learn more about their faith through Sunday school and/or AWANA.

In 1999, average attendance was 35 people. In just the past year and a half, worship attendance has more than doubled and now frequently exceeds 600 people.

Three hundred and sixty-four children and adults are being served in some form of Discipleship or Small Group.

Our Giving Tree has helped communicate family needs, 37 of which have been met since December – from diapers to car repairs.

Giving has grown six-fold in the past eight years.

As we prepared to undertake this capital campaign, we invited input from the church. People were over whelmingly supportive of the needs we plan to address, with 88 percent urging us to move forward immediately.

How much am I being asked to consider committing to Fountain Springs’ Build Up Reach Out capital campaign?

We ask that each person prayerfully consider making a sacrificial financial gift over the next three years in addition to your current support for the church. How much you give and how you determine what you will commit is between you and God. While there is no set amount being requested, we encourage you to consider a pledge of 3 percent to 10 percent of your gross income during the three years of our campaign. The chart below is to assist you in considering your commitment.

What are the concerns that a building project will address?Fountain Springs has experienced an influx of believers eager to hear God’s word. Our growth over the past year has strained our facility beyond its capacity to sustain our ministry. We are serving children and youth in ad hoc spaces that are inadequate in size and number. Our parking lot is filled to overflowing every Sunday and seating is becoming scarce in our sanctuary. If we do not respond to these challenges, we know that our growth will slow and we will be unable to fulfill our vision to influence more members of our community with the story of Jesus Christ.

How do we know Fountain Springs can afford this investment in our ministry? The plans being considered represent a significant investment in the future of our ministry and the cost of that investment is substantial ($4.6M). Our leaders take the responsibility of that decision very seriously and believe that the costs involved are manageable for Fountain Springs. We remain mindful that all we have is a gift from our God and trust that if we are truly following His will He will provide and help our ministry flourish.

We hope to raise $1 million through our capital campaign and finance the balance of the project through our denominational financing arm, the Wesleyan Investment Foundation (WIF). WIF is chartered as a ministry of the Wesleyan church to help churches like us better reach their com-munities for Christ.

Weekly giving to Fountain Springs has grown generously and we are currently receiving gifts beyond our budgeted need each week. This surplus would be sufficient to meet our anticipated financing obligations even at its current levels.

When should I make my commitment?may 2 is our Commitment sunday. Please bring your pledge card to our worship service that day. If you will be unable to join us, please send your card to the church office as soon as possible.

Why is it important to complete a pledge card? Can’t I just contribute money on a regular basis?Fountain Springs appreciates any contribution you make. When you complete a pledge card telling us what you plan to give over the next three years, we will be in a better position to make responsible recommendations about the scope of our building project and the project financing.

When are people expected to actually fulfill their pledges? We are inviting people to consider a three-year pledge to the capital campaign, payable in any interval that makes sense for your family. The official collections for the campaign will begin June 1, 2010 and end May 31, 2013.

What if my current situation changes and I cannot fulfill my commitment to the campaign? We realize that people’s situations change. If this happens, please honor your pledge as best you can. If you need to revise your pledge, contact an Elder. They will be happy to work with you in adjusting the amount or duration of your commitment.
