WHAT WE’VE GOT PLANNED TO MAKE AOTEA GREAT BARRIER BETTER

OUR VISIONŌtara-Papatoetoeisagreatplacetolive. We are a community with strong identity and resilience. We are proud of our history, and have communities that are working hard to make our places safe to live and enjoy.

We have our challenges, such as strengthening our local economy, cleaning ourlakeandwaterways,andfixingourtransport problems. But we also have positive new initiatives, and with your support we can resolve these problems.

ACHIEVING OUR VISIONWe can achieve our vision with the following draft outcomes.

A heart for ManukauManukau metropolitan centre becomes the thriving heart of our area: an attractive visitor destination, business centre, and place to shop, live, learn, work and play.

Over the next three years we want to:

implement a local economic development action plan that will support more economic activity based on tourism and education, such as a rail line between Manukau and the airport to support tourism

advocatefortheTePapaManukaudevelopment,and collaborate where we can to improve Hayman Park. Ideas such as a theatre lawn, water terraces and new paths and boardwalks will be considered

create better pedestrian experiences, by improving footpaths, crossings, adding trees, lighting and furniture to streets and reducing the dominance of cars.

Town centre vitalityTherevitalisationofŌtara,OldPapatoetoeandHunters Corner town centres will reinforce their place at the core of our communities, as shopping, service, entertainment and community gathering places. We want to further improve the general appearance, convenience and sense of public safety in our town centres.

Over the next three years we want to:

continue to improve roads around town centres, footpaths, parks, public art, libraries, community centres and halls, and maintain and improve the existingclosedcircuittelevision(CCTV)securitysystems

scopehowŌtaratowncentrecanbecomeacommunity and education hub

build on Old Papatoetoe’s railway town heritage as development continues

continue to develop Hunters Corner as a sports and entertainment hub.

Parks and facilities that meet people’s needsOur communities have access to parks and recreational facilities that build a sense of identity and belonging, boost participation in sport and promote healthy, active lifestyles.

Over the next three years we want to:

develop a master plan to renew Manukau Sports Bowl

keep our community healthy by providing free access to pools for adults and children, which will continue to be funded by a targeted rate

install sand carpet surfaces on our parks to extend winter usage at Papatoetoe Recreation Reserve and NgātiŌtaraPark,andinvestinimprovementstoKohuora Park

support motorsport clubs to establish their facilities at Colin Dale Park

establishamulti-sportfacilityatNgātiŌtaraPark.

Our vision for our community: Manukau metropolitan centre is an attractive visitor destination, business centre and place to shop, live, learn and play

excellent transport connections help everyone get around.

THETRADE-OFFWe have put this plan together to reflect what you have told us while at the same time taking care to ensure that the projects identified will deliver on our outcomes. We can’t do everything so we will need to continually review our projects which may mean that we have to change some

of our funding plans, replacing existing projects with new projects that better fit our outcomes. So it’s really important we hear from you, to confirm we’re focused on what’s most important to you, and help us decide which projects to fund.

Healthy harbours and waterwaysOur harbours, foreshore and waterways will be accessible, attractive, and safe places for our community to enjoy for relaxation and recreation.

Over the next three years we want to:

advocatefortheŌtaraLakeandWaterwaysvision,and develop an action plan with funders and stakeholders

addfilterstoroaddrainstoreducesedimentinstreams and improve the health of our harbours

support the successful Wai Care projects and programmes to educate industries in our area about water conservation, and get our communities involved.

Thriving communitiesOur communities will work together to improve community safety and to keep our neighbourhoods attractive. We will promote leisure activities and the arts, and celebrate heritage and cultural diversity.

Over the next three years we want to:

keep neighbourhoods safe, by continuing our safety initiatives in cooperation with the Police and other stakeholders,includingwardens,CCTV,andtheAmbassadors programme

support the celebration of cultural occasions and festivalslikeDiwali,ChineseNewYear,PacificeventsandMatariki(MāoriNewYear)

revitalise our aging halls and community centres to meetcurrentneeds,startingwithTePukeoTaraCommunity Centre and Papatoetoe Chambers and PapatoetoeTownHall.

Age friendly communitiesEveryoneisvaluedandcanparticipateinworkandcommunity activities.

Over the next three years we want to:

continue helping our young people get jobs, through the Youth Connections programme

supporttheYouthAdvisoryGroupforŌtara-Papatoetoe, and listen to their advice about the needs and ideas of young people

establish skills sheds, which are places for older people to socialise and construct hobby projects and share their skills with younger people.
