Q. When did you begin your studies?

September 2012

Q. What influenced you to begin studyingfor a master’s degree in theology?

I interned for two years with the Sisters ofSt. Benedict in Beech Grove, Indiana, forspiritual direction certification. After Ifinished their program, I became acutelyaware of how much more there was tolearn and I committed to ongoingeducation and formation.

My need for structure led me to inquireabout the Lay Degree Program at SaintMeinrad. After reviewing the pastoraltheology program, and speaking with thedirector and other folks who hadcompleted their master’s here, myspiritual director and I determined that itwas a good next step for me.

Q. What else are you doing besidesseeking a master’s degree (work, family, volunteer work)?

I work full time as controller (accountant)for Wessler Engineering Inc., a consultingcivil and environmental engineering firmin Indianapolis. I have worked there for16 years and plan to retire in two years –March 15, 2017, to be exact. In theevenings, I have a steady spiritualdirection practice. I thoroughly enjoydirecting and consider it more ministrythan work – and definitely a blessing.

My husband and I will be celebrating our37th anniversary this July. We have onedaughter, 25, who will be married thisfall. My parents, both 90, require quite abit of tender, loving care right now. They

that as long as I walk humbly with God,all will be well.

Q. Hobbies?

I love to write. Right now I write a lot ofreflections, but someday I plan to write abook. I already have the subject and thetitle – all it needs is the text. Minor detail. When I retire, I plan to learn something Ihave longed to do – work with stainedglass. Many a story has been told withstained glass art, and there are so manymore stories to be told.

Q. What aspect of your coursework hasbeen most rewarding? My pastoral classes have given me adeeper understanding of what it is to behuman, benefitting me with personalknowledge and insight, as well aslearning how to accompany others in thechallenges that life brings. I find thatdeveloping the ability to help others togrow through their challenges andrespond with faith, hope and love is veryrewarding.

Q. What aspect of your coursework hasbeen most challenging?

Time management has been my greatestchallenge. It requires much effort for meto balance studying with currentobligations. Occasionally, I find that Ihave not given as much time to studyingas I want to – or need to – because itdoesn’t come as easy as it once did!

[Meet the Student]

live in Merrillville, IN, so it involvessome travel time when I see themevery few weeks.

I volunteer as much as I can now, mostly as a member of the AdvisoryBoard of Our Lady of Fatima RetreatHouse in Indianapolis. They do someincredible outreach and ministry to themarginalized, as well as wonderfulprograms for healing and spiritual growthfor folks of all denominations.

Q. Favorite saint and why?

My longtime favorite saint is Teresa ofAvila. My prayer and spiritual life havebeen greatly influenced by her wit andpractical wisdom. She’s taught me not totake myself so seriously and not to sweatmy flaws and failures – everybody hasthem and God loves us all the morebecause of them.

Her determination and success as areformer and community builder hasinspired me in my past ministry and in mygrowth as a Christian woman.

Q. Favorite Scripture verse and why?

If I had to pick just one, it’s Proverbs 3:5-7: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, onyour own intelligence do not rely; in allyour ways be mindful of him, and he willmake straight your paths. Do not be wisein your own eyes, fear the Lord and turnaway from evil.

I tend to want to overthink things andhave long struggled with being aperfectionist and kind of a control freak. Ihave made great strides in “letting go”with the help of this verse. It reminds me

I’m hoping that my degree and retirementwill happen in close succession. I don’twant to quit working; I just want to dosomething other than accounting andadministration. I am hoping to activelygrow my current spiritual directionpractice. I don’t know what else God hasplanned for me, but I am open to thepossibilities and I’m sure it will befulfilling and rewarding.

Q. Other comments?

Studying at Saint Meinrad has been mostrewarding – not just from the standpointof education, but also for personal growthin faith formation, spirituality andfriendship. I have met so many wonderfulpeople here and the Hill has become asacred place of refreshment for me. It’sone of the best things God has done forme.

Infirmary renovationwill add more space, better facilities

In addition to the renovations to theexisting infirmary rooms, four slightlylarger rooms will be created to assistmonks who need more hands-on care.

A total of 5,200 square feet will berenovated and 4,400 square feet will beadded to the infirmary.

The timing for the infirmary renovationcoincides with extensive repairs underway in the monastery that required themonks to vacate the building. As part ofthose repairs, the heating/ventilation/airconditioning and plumbing systems willbe replaced.

Pat Clark, the monastery renovationproject manager, explains that the castiron sewer lines have deteriorated andthe copper water lines have thinned to apoint where they need to be replaced.

Also, most of the valves no longerfunction. “Today, if we wanted to shutoff a heating or cooling line, it wouldhave to be shut off at the powerhouse,”explains Pat. “Performing that operationnow means no one can have cooling inthe entire monastery. The same is truefor domestic cold and hot water lines.”

The monastery repairs are estimated tocost $8.5 million, and the infirmaryrenovation will cost an estimated $1.6million. The work is expected to becomplete by August 2016.

Chapter 36:1 of the Rule of St. Benedictstates: “Care of the sick must rankabove and before all else, so that theymay truly be served as Christ.”

Saint Meinrad monks who are sick or infirm are able to stay home in themonastery and receive the care theyneed in the infirmary.

When the monks moved into the newlybuilt monastery in 1982, rooms were setaside for infirmary use that had not beendesigned for health care. Thus, theinfirmary does not meet the Americanswith Disabilities Act regulations, whichwere enacted later. Ann Rohleder, director of health services at SaintMeinrad, says this is the main reason forthe infirmary renovation that is nowunder way.

“We want to look at the infirmary as themonks’ home, but it is a nursing facilityas well,” says Ann.

As the infirmary currently stands, boththe doorways and the hallway need to bewidened to accommodate wheelchairsand hospital beds. Bathrooms andshowers also need to be wheelchairaccessible.

The 14 existing infirmary rooms will be renovated to be ADA compliant, allowing monks to stay in their roomsfor normal living and bathing needs.

The second reason for the renovation,Ann explains, is that the nurses stationneeds to be relocated to provide bettercare for the monks in the infirmary. Thenurses station used to be tucked into acorner.

The corridor in front of the infirmaryrooms will be expanded to eight feet toallow for better circulation through theinfirmary. An improved nurses stationwill be located off the new corridor andwill be centrally located to all of therooms.

When Fr. Damian arrived on campus, twoother monks shared his name (Fr. DamianSchmelz and Br. Damian Schepers). Toavoid confusion, he quickly becameknown as “Damo,” a name coined by Fr.Matthias Neuman, OSB.

Besides teaching Old Testament and NewTestament courses to seminarians and laystudents, Fr. Damian has taught in SaintMeinrad’s Permanent Deacon FormationProgram, the January Interterm, SummerSession and independent study courses. Inaddition, he was the associate director forvisiting Benedictine students for manyyears.

In early September, Fr. Damian will packup a U-Haul truck and return toAssumption Abbey for a new assignmentfrom Abbot Brian Wangler, OSB, one ofFr. Damian’s former students and analumnus of Saint Meinrad.

Fr. Damian Dietlein, OSB, has been apopular teacher of Scripture for nearly fivedecades at Saint Meinrad.

RFr. Damian Dietleinretires from faculty after nearly 50 years

The North Dakota abbey has 53 monks.Until recently, the abbey operated a cattleranch, where Fr. Damian typically returnedeach summer to help with hay baling.

“It has been a good ride, and I am gratefulfor all the blessings I have received, aswell as the privilege of learning from themany students and faculty members overall these years,” said Fr. Damian about hisretirement.

“I have always said that what makes ourschool so great is the spirit, the moraleand mutual support,” he said.

President-Rector Fr. Denis Robinson,OSB, says the Seminary and School ofTheology will miss Fr. Damian’sinfluence. “He has become a legend atSaint Meinrad. The love he has inspiredover the years from seminarians and laystudents is truly an inspiring legacy.

“There are few today who can hope toachieve what he has achieved, but hislegacy will long outlive him. It isingrained in the mind and heart of everystudent he ever taught.”
