As a former NG NCO one of the more difficult

tasks on my plate was to inculcate the need for

weapon cleanliness. For some ungodly reason,

it was easier to motivate a troop to take a hill

than it was to clean his weapon. I think part of

the problem rests with the integral complexities

of the Stoner design; there are simply a lot of

things to deal with, especially when youre

exhausted. But, stepping away from the military

application for a moment, most shooters dont

relish cleaning their weapons. If designers

would include a self-cleaning feature, like and

oven, theyd have a hit on their hands.

However, the inescapable truth is that weapons

function reliably only when they are afforded a

reasonable level of maintenance.

Through the travail of ages, weapon cleaning

systems have evolved to a point where an

operator now has at his disposal a complete

multi-caliber cleaning system that he can carry

in a pouch that is 2 to 3 inches in diameter.

Weve also seen the rehash of an old concept,

the bore snake.

The bore snakes popularity stems from its ease

of use, run it through the bore 5 or so passes

and youve cleaned your weapon sufficiently to

make you feel good about yourself. Tell me this

is not so? I am guilty of that too, what can one

say!

Well, you can take that bore snake of yours and

make a pair of shoes out of it because OTIS

in Nomex fibers to form a semi rigid1 tool that

is stiff enough to dislodge an obstruction in

either bore or chamber. It provides 10 inches of

cleaning surface. The NOMEX fibers are heat

resistant to 700F, and stiff enough to act as

both a brush and patch. RIPCORDs NOMEX

cover is laid out in a helix pattern so it contacts

lands and grooves efficiently.

Lastly, the tool is terminated on both ends with

8-32 threaded ends to fit all Otis cleaning

components. Now, that really rocks, and

uniquely differentiates OTIS product from all

others.

OTIS was gracious enough to provide us with a

pistol caliber and rifle caliber sample, which I

tried on a SIG I had sitting around with about

200 rounds fired since the last cleaning.

RIPCORD handled it like a BOSS.

Using the OTIS RIPCORD is best done

immediately after firing your weapon. As

always, clear and make your weapon safe. You

should then lock your bolt or slide open and

pass the thin end of the cleaning tool through

the bore breech-to-muzzle; pulling it through

with one smooth motion.

The bottom line? It works astoundingly well,

and more importantly you can get back to

shooting sooner!
