DAY IN THE LIFE OF A OTSEGO
KINDERGARTENER
Drop-off and Pick-Up ProceduresMorning Procedures:
● Parents drop-off at the front of the school
● Bus drop-off is in the bus corral● Walkers enter through the playground
doors● On the first day of school, we
encourage you to have your child follow their typical routine.
Afternoon Procedures:● Bus ● Parent Pick Up● Edventure Club● Walker
*Tags will be provided the first day of Kindergarten
First Week of School● Kindergarten students will walk to their classes when
they arrive at school. There are many adults in the halls to assist students in finding the right room. We will all go to breakfast together for the first few days.
● Buddies from upper grades help students with afternoon dismissal.
Staying Organized● Lockers and Cubbies
○ Each child has a locker or a cubby (shared).○ Please LABEL all clothing (especially winter gear)
○ Put an Extra Set of Clothes in backpack● Mailboxes● Classroom supplies on the supply list● Specific School Supplies watch for your teacher letter in August
CommunicationB.E.E. Binder (½” 3-ring binder)
● Daily take-home binder for classroom work, homework, newsletters, parent notes...
Eagle Folder● School Information● This folder will come home on Wednesdays● Please remove and read the information in the folder and return
the folder the following day.

Specialists: 6 Day Digital Rotation● Physical Education/Music - 4 days● Art - 1 day● Media/Technology - 1 day
Recess:● 20 Minutes before lunch every day● Supervised by assistants● Students need independent skills when
getting ready for recess. ● Label ALL Items!
Lunch:● 20 Minutes● Each child has a 4-5 digit code, number
recognition is required● Students need independent skills for
opening milk cartons, containers from home, dumping their garbage, stacking tray.
● There are a variety of lunch choices● Allergy concerns with the menu- specific
ingredients listed online, or see Health Clerk or Cooks with questions.
● Guests are welcome, beginning after MEA- You can use your child’s lunch number or bring your own lunch.
Kindergarten Language ArtsKey Concepts:
● Name Lowercase and Uppercase Letters and Sounds
● Identifies/Produces Rhyming Words● Reads Sight Words● Reads Grade Level Text● Write Simple Sentences using Phonics

Whole Group and Small Group Differentiated Instruction
Handwriting:● Correct Letter Formation● Pencil Grip
○ All letters should start at the top○ Using the lines
Kindergarten Math Basics:● Identify Numbers to 31● Count to 50● Write Numbers to 31● Identify 2 & 3 Dimensional Shapes● Pattern and sort● And so much more!
Personal Needs and Social SkillsPlease encourage your children to practice the following things:
● Dress for outside play independently (shoes, coats)
● Take care of toilet needs- shuts the door, wipes, washes hands, and can tend to clothing.
● Cooperate with others: share, play, takes turn
● Keeps hands and feet to self
● Separate easily from parent
Fine Motor Skills● Has a three finger pencil grip
● Prints name using a capital letter at the beginning and the remainder in lowercase
● Holds scissors correctly and can cut out simple shapes
● Can remove and replace marker and glue stick covers
● If ready, practice tying their own shoes
Importance of Home Practice
How can you get involved?● Otsego has a parent organization- PAC meets
monthly and helps plan special events and school activities for students and families. Look for info! They are on facebook!
● Volunteering: Opportunities to help in the classroom, prepare things at home, help at school functions, class parties, field trips...(Approved background check needed)
● WATCH DOGS program- a special role for Dads. More info in the fall.
