Welcome to the North Coast Otters public arts initiative, a merger of citizen art and science.

Learn about the North Coast’s native river otter by collecting sightings and selfies with unique otter sculptures painted and decorated by our region’s talented artists.

Fall in love with the 108 Otter Art sculptures on display at shops, restaurants, visitor centers, and other public spaces in Humboldt, Del Norte, Siskiyou, Trinity, and Mendocino counties in June–Sept 2021.

Use the maps to explore the region and find the otter art! Find 20 or more otter art sculptures to win a raffle prize, bid in the online auction to take home your favorite otter, while kids enjoy Junior Otter Spotter activity booklets.

please join us in Promoting clean water and healthy habitats where we live and play!At the end of the summer, the sculptures will be auctioned to provide valuable funds for river otter studies and student internships with community-based watershed projects.

Celebrate life, otters, and waters

By merging citizen art and science, the project will increase awareness and value in our natural world with the river otter as the visual “spokesperson.”

Promoting clean water and healthy habitats where we live and play!North Coast Otters—public arts initiative was conceived when considering the rivers, wetlands, lagoons, and coastlines where wild river otters live with fish and other creatures in our region’s rich habitats, which were originally tended by local indigenous communities. All natural beings have their own story and/or song, as is expressed by the names for river otter in some of the region’s original languages, including:

Hupa: ło:q’-yiditile, salmon-it relishes, craves Karuk: pay sáruk, down by river one Tolowa Dee-ni’: naa-ghaa-t’uu-ne, they are swimmers together Wiyot: sukseswilh, takes an ugly mouthful Yurok: ne-pe’-weesh-neg, fish eater

On receiving a ‘blank canvas’—the otter sculpture—artists were asked:

What would you like your North Coast Otter to say to the world?Let these 14 otters painted by Native Artists lead the way to a summer of discovery.

Silent OnlineAuction

6

You’ll have the opportunity to bid online for your favorite otter!

WEBSITE:app.galabid.com/otters

All available otter sculptures will be auctioned to the highest bidder to raise funds for future river otter studies and student internship opportunities with community groups working on clean water and healthy habitats. Everyone is welcome to participate.

Bidding Options:

1. Bid online, all summer long. Visit the webpage, otterart.humboldt.edu to learn more.

2. Purchase outright by “adopting” an otter sculpture at the agreed rate. This will remove the otter from the auction. The agreed rate is $5,000 for all otters, except for a few select otters, which are more.

3. The project will culminate with a COVID-safe “in person” action of 30 select otters in September 2021. Follow the updates Online (otterart.humboldt.edu) or on Facebook @northcoastottersart.

The starting auction price in the live auction will be the highest online bid prior to the auction.

You can participate in the live auction in person, via phone lines in the auction rooms, online using the website, or via absentee “best and final” bids.

4. Last bids for ‘online’ otters: 6 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on Wednesday, 9/15/21
