You’re considering a hair transplant. But you may have heard spooky stories about the process. Maybe you’ve even seen hack
jobs that made you cringe and avert your eyes. You worry that it won’t look natural and you’ll be embarrassed. You’re probably
concerned about the cost. Like many of my patients, you may think your hair transplant won’t last and you’ll have to continue shell-
ing out money for more transplants for the rest of your life.
1
Listen, I’m no stranger to fears about hair transplants. Over the past 15 years
I’ve treated more than 10,000 hair loss patients worldwide and performed
more than 2,500 hair transplants. Trust me, I’ve experienced it all, and I get it.
There’s no shame in fearing a hair transplant. In fact, it’s quite common, not to men-
tion totally justifiable. Your hair is one of the most visible features of your appear-
ance, and changing your appearance can definitely be a scary proposition.
But the right investment in your appearance can be one of the most worth-
while and satisfying things you can do to boost your confidence and change
your life.
Ibelieve knowledge overcomes fear—even if it’s not necessarily what we want to hear. So in this e-book I’ll reveal all the fears
my patients have expressed to me over the years, and share my professional responses to them.
I’ll tell it to you straight. I won’t varnish the truth, nor will I promise that my answers will completely eliminate your fear. But
after reading this you’ll certainly be more informed and conscious, and thus better equipped to conquer your fear.
2
By managing that fear, you’ll be able to move forward
with your hair transplant and look better, feel better,
and live better.
So here are the most common fears I hear from hair transplant
candidates in my New York hair restoration clinic:
The short answer to this is only if you choose the wrong hair transplant surgeon. Yes, it is possible to get an unnatural look.
Unskilled and inexperienced surgeons can sometimes insert ridiculous plugs that look like a doll’s hair. They can put the wrong
types of hair in the wrong locations. They can place the hairs too uniformly, unlike how hairs naturally grow.
COMMON FEAR #1:Will it be detectable and look embarrass-ingly unnatural?
3
However, with the right hair restoration surgeon your
hair transplant will look, feel, and grow undeniably natural—as
if you’d never lost your hair. You’ll look as good, if not better
than ever before. And no one—not even your hair stylist—
will ever be able to tell you had a hair transplant.
For proof, see before and after pictures of my hair transplant
clients, and read client testimonials.
This completely natural look is made possible through two
techniques: follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit
transplant (FUT), commonly known as strip harvesting.
4
“Extracting” means to remove an existing healthy follicle from
one part of the scalp and “transplanting” it to another part of
the scalp that has lost hair. FUE & strip harvesting are just two
different ways of employing this powerful technique. They are
both sophisticated & delicate techniques requiring the precision
use of microscopic instruments.
5
Getting a natural look with FUE and strip harvesting rests
on knowing how to identify groups of follicular units that form
the basis of how your hairs are naturally grouped. FUE & strip
harvesting is not a simple matter of just transplanting follicular
units one at a time. The surgeon must know how many follicles
to remove and from where, and the surgeon must know how
to distribute the follicles in the bald area, controlling such vari-
ables as hair direction, angles, and follicle groupings.
A further challenge is knowing where to transplant these units
in the balding area. All these variables must be controlled by the
surgeon to create a natural hairline and natural looking distribu-
tion of hair in a previously bald area of the scalp.
The follicular extraction and transplantation procedure is intri-
cate. Mastering these techniques takes considerable time and
training, and having prior surgical experience is extremely help-
ful. In the hands of a skilled hair restoration surgeon, it can be
almost impossible to tell if a person has had this type of hair
transplant if you’ve never met them before, and even if you
have, it can be very hard to distinguish the treated area of the
head with an untreated area. The goal is nothing short of trying
to recreate hair on a bald part of the scalp in a way that it looks
like it was never lost in the first place.

The cost of a hair transplant depends on the number of grafts and sessions necessary to complete your procedure. This is
different for each patient. The cost can be as low as $4,000 and can range up to $20,000 depending on how many grafts a person
needs and the type of hair transplant procedure.
Thankfully, we offer financing to hair transplant clients, with monthly payments as low as $100. Other factors may be
involved, but it is a one-time fee and no additional fees are added for visits, medications, or consultations.
We’ll give you a more precise hair transplant cost estimate during your free consultation.
COMMON FEAR #2:IS IT AFFORDABLE?
7
Nah, not really. The only pain you can ever feel from the procedure is when we administer local anesthesia (Novocaine), and
that just feels like little pinches. In some cases, depending on a few factors, we may even give patients light oral sedation, in which
case you won’t feel a thing.
COMMON FEAR #3:WILL IT HURT?
In most cases, a hair transplant is a simple outpatient procedure.
You’ll chill in our chair for a few hours, watch a couple movies, then
be home for dinner.
Very rarely, some transplants may require multiple procedures over
two to three days to get the hair volume you desire.
8
Your scalp will have visible redness for about three to five days following a hair transplant procedure. In some cases, the red-
ness may be very well camouflaged, depending on how much native hair you already have.
One thing we do to minimize this fear of embarrassment is to do your procedure before a long weekend. Another technique we
help you with is to simply create a quick and easy explanation that you can use if you’re ever asked about the redness. But after a
few days, most people are back to normal.
And, of course, remember that a few days of minor embarrassment pales in comparison to the lifetime of confidence
you’ll experience after your hair grows back thick, full, natural, and magnificent.
COMMON FEAR #4:Will people at work notice that I’ve had work done? Should I take time off work to avoid embarrassment?
9
This is well known as “white coat syndrome,” and it’s actually quite common. I empathize with it; hospitals are not exactly
Disneyland.
Hair transplantation is a medical procedure, though certainly nowhere near as scary as radiation therapy or heart surgery. How-
ever, if you share this fear with my patients, there are several ways we help you get through it.
We’ll work with you to understand where your fears lie; perhaps you’ve had unpleasant experiences before. If necessary, we’ll
give you something to help you sleep for a couple of nights before the scheduled procedure. We’ll also let you speak with other
patients who may have had similar fears. We’ll take extra time with you during the numbing process. We can even offer hypnosis,
if necessary, to alleviate your fears.
We may also simply administer light oral sedation. You’ll drift away into a sweet, oblivious, and completely safe rest, and you won’t
even know what happened to you. You’ll wake up happy, the scariness all behind you and with a head full of gorgeous, natural hair.
COMMON FEAR #5:I’m afraid of doctors and hospitals. Is this a scary medical procedure?
10
The truth is that it’s takes about six months for your hair transplant to achieve its full, natural body. Anyone who tries to tell
you it’s a quicker process than that is lying, and you should avoid them at all costs.
The good news is that your hair will grow as if you’d never lost it, which leads me to the final fear I encounter.
COMMON FEAR #6:Will it take a long time to look natural, and will it look stupid in the meantime?
11
Transplanted hairs will never fall out. They will stay on your head until the
day you die. In some cases, additional hair transplants can be beneficial. But this is only
to replace non-transplanted hair after it has been lost over time.
Transplanted hairs don’t fall out because of the DNA structure of transplanted hairs. The
reason why people think hair transplants are temporary is because they think they’ve
lost their hair due to processes and hormones within their scalp or body. And if that’s
the case, then what’s to prevent the same thing from happening to transplanted hair?
The truth is that hair loss occurs because of the DNA structure of hair strands
themselves. Hairs in places where balding commonly occurs have completely different
genetic coding than hairs that never thin or fall out, such as the back of the scalp.
COMMON FEAR #7:Will transplanted hairs fall out, and will I have to keep paying for more hair trans-plants throughout my life?
12
Hairs that are prone to balding are highly susceptible to di-
hydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a metabolite of testosterone
that surrounds hair follicles and the hormone responsible for most
balding. Hairs on the back of the scalp are not affected by DHT, and
are therefore immune to falling out. The balding process occurs
within hairs themselves. Simply replace
lost hair with DHT-resistant hair, and
you’ve solved the problem—naturally
and permanently. The technical term
for this phenomenon is “donor domi-
nance.”
The hairs on the back of your
scalp are like brick houses, while
the hairs on top of your head are
like cardboard shanties. Just as cardboard shanties blow
away with the wind, so do hairs with genetic coding that
makes them susceptible to DHT.
With a hair transplant, it’s like we’re picking up your
“brick house” hairs from the foundations, and moving
them to the top of the scalp, where they will stay forev-
er. They will grow as if they had always been there from
birth. DHT doesn’t affect them in the slightest.
This is why a hair transplant is usually
the best hair loss solution, and the
only permanent solution. In the vast
majority of cases, it’s a one-time cost
for a phenomenal result that will last
forever.
