To those of you who remember 1961, Welcome Back!

To those of you who only know about 1961 from yourhistory books, Welcome! Here are some of the eventsthat shaped 1961:

John Kennedy was inaugurated 35th President, 17-year-old Bobby Fischerwon the US chess championship for the fourth time, Yuri Gagarin was thefirst man in space, and Alan Shepard made the first US space flight! RogerMaris hit 61 home runs, and the NY Yankees beat the Cincinnati Reds in theWorld Series. Steve Wozniak celebrated his 11rh birthday. The Berlin Wallwas built, and the Peace Corps was created by President Kennedy.

Popular songs were "Love Makes The World Go Round", "Moon River","Where The Boys Are", "Where Have All The Flowers Gone!", "Calcutta",and "Exodus." Popular movies were "West Side Story", Academy Award win-ner for Best Picture, "Judgment At Nuremberg", "Parent Trap", "The Hus-tler", and "The Absent Minded Professor". Top-rated TV shows were"Gunsmoke", ''The Andy Griffith Show", "The Untouchables", "Bonanza","Wagon Train" and "Hazel". Also on the air: "Dr. Kildare", "Mr. Ed" and"Wide World Of Sports".

Joseph Heller's World War II satire "Catch 22" was published; the titlequickly became part of the American lexicon. Harper Lee won a Pulitzer Prizefor "To Kill a Mockingbird", Bob Dylan made his first concert appearance inGreenwich Village, Gary Cooper dies and Clark Gable's last film, "The Mis-fits", was released.

On Broadway, the Tony-Award winning musical was "Bye, Bye Birdie"and the winning play was "Becket". Richard Burton won Best Actor in aMusical for "Camelot".

IBM introduced the IBM Selectric Typewriter and the FDA approvedacetarniniphen. Inventions included the electric toothbrush and Valium!Americans were trying to lose weight with Metrecal, the liquid diet in a can.

The population in San Jose was 204,196 (today: 873,300). The popula-tion in the United States was 178,464,236 (today: 269,228,542). Then, 38%of all women worked outside the home compared to 60% today.

ANote from the Director

How to Succeed ... is based on Shepherd Mead's 1954 send-upof the business world at that time. Frank Loesser andAbe Bur-rows developed Mead's ideas into a delightful, satirical theaterpiece complete with musical numbers that exaggerate officelife. This show is not to be taken seriously. It is a farce. It is acommentary on what life in the business world was like in1961. It's fun to see how much we've changed -and how muchwe really haven't!

The look and feel of this production of How to Succeed ... hasbeen carefully chosen to convey the period as well as the toneof the show. We've also tried to use as many actual clothesfrom the period as possible; this, combined with our concept, has led to our color choices for scenes. So you can appreciateour subtleties, here's what you'll see: before Finch joins WorldWide Wicket, it is just a black-and-white-world, not a whole lotof color, not much life! Soon we see ourWWW employees moveto that non-committal color: beige, which reflects so well theirvarious"Coffee"moods. Our ladies begin the second act "greenwith envy", and all, in our happy-ever-after ending, throughFinch's influence atwww, are in living color!

In the recent Broadway revival, Walter Cronkite was the BookVoice. Since we're doing this show in Silicon Valley, where somany have succeeded in business, I definitely wanted some-one for our Book Voice who was clearly identified with thebusiness and success of tills valley. I am thrilled that our BookVoice is none other than Steve Wozniak!

So, now, sit back and enjoy the view and the journey back to atime when a computer was the size of a large room!

WEST VALLEY LIGHT OPERA ASSOCIATIONANNOUNCES ITS 34TH SEASON, 1998-1999

IICAROUSELIIMusic by RICHARD RODGERS, Book & Lyrics by OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II,

Based on Ference Molnar's "Liliom", this favorite Rodgers & Hammerstein musical relates the storyof a handsome, carefree carnival barker who captivates and marries a lovely, naive local girl. In adesperate attempt to get money for his unborn child, he is killed during the robbery and is sent toheaven. However, he is perrnitted to return to earth for one day during which time he bringshappiness to his wife and daughter in a dramatic testimony to the power of love. This showoriginally opened on Broadway in 1945. The 1956 film version starred Gordon MacRae and ShirleyJones. In 1967, ABC-TV starred Robert Goulet in its presentation and a new, highly acclaimedrevival opened in London in 1993 and in New York in 1994. Memorable songs include: "If I LovedYou", "Mister Snow", "June Is Bustin' Out All Over", and "You'll Never Walk Alone". Performances:Oct/Nov 1998.

"THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG"Music by MARVIN HAMLISCH, Lyrics by CAROL BAYER SAGER, Book by NEIL SIMON

America's premier funny man and the Tony Award-winning composer of "A Chorus Line" collaboratedon this hit musical; a funny, romantic story about a couple who write today's most popular love songs, but have a difficult time making their lives as harmonious as their music. Of course, there's a happyending. This musical is witty, full of blithe good humor and hilarious jokes. It opened on Broadway in1979 starring Robert Klein and Lucie Arnaz. Songs from the score include: "Fallin' ", "If She Really KnewMe", "Workin' It Out", "When You're In My Arms", and the title song. Performances: MarlApr 19991

IIJOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOATIIMusic by ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER, Lyrics by TIM RICE

This will be the first Andrew Lloyd Webber musical presented in this theater. The composer of suchmemorable hits ("Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita", "Cats", "Phantom Of The Opera" & "StarlightExpress") chose this biblical tale of Joseph and his brothers from the Old Testament to create a joyousexplosion of color, comedy, music and fun that is popular with families of all ages. Joseph was aprophetic dreamer and, as a youth, was given a coat of many colors by his father. Joseph's brotherswere jealous and sold him into slavery in Egypt. There, because of his gift for interpreting dreams, hewas made a principal advisor to the Pharaoh. This musical opened on Broadway in 1981 and severalnational touring companies have since presented it in the major cities across the country.Musical numbers include: "Joseph's Dream", "One More Angel In Heaven","Who's The Thief?", 'and"Any Dream Will Do". Performances: Jun/Ju11999 .

DID YOU KNOW?• that the program credit indicates that the musical was based on Shep-

herd Mead's tongue-in-cheek manual, but since the book had no plot,Abe Burrows' script was actually based on an unproduced play byJack Weinstock & Willie Gilbert?

• that Robert Morse and Rudy Vallee, who played J.B. Biggley, the stuffyPresident of the Company, starred in the Broadway production open-ing in 1961 and were also in the 1967 movie?

• that Frank Loesser (Composer & Lyricist) has written more than 1500songs for Hollywood movies and live stage musicals, including anunprecedented three on the Hit Parade at one time: "Heart & Soul","Small Fry" and "Two Sleepy People"?

• that Frank Loesser's first Broadway hit was "Where's Charley?" whichincluded two unforgettable songs, "Once In Love With Amy" & "MyDarling, My Darling" and that then came his 1950 production of "Guys& Dolls" which became one of the most popular musicals of all time?

• that Abe Burrows, co-author, first gained public recognition as head writerfor the Rudy Vallee Show, Duffy's Tavern, & the Dinah Shore Show, thathe also co-authored "Guys & Dolls", and that his best-known screenplay was "The Solid Gold Cadillac", starring Judy Holliday?
