Family Life• Children are regarded as blessings. If

parents were unable to have a child, they could adopt. So all you kids who want to get the “special treatment”, come to Egypt!

• If a family can’t afford to send their sons to school, the parents will teach the children at home. In Egypt, there is an education for everyone!

Marriage• Most girls married at age twelve,

while boys were always a few years older.

• A common man would have one wife, a king would have many.

• Divorce was an option, but not common. Egypt is a place where marriages last!

Food and Cooking• Done in clay ovens over fires.• Bread and beer were the most

popular food and drink. • Food was prepared in many different

ways. If you like trying new, interesting things, then Egypt is the place for you!

Appearance• Egyptians bathed daily, rubbing

themselves in perfume. If you are sick of people not taking showers, then escape that stink and come to Egypt RIGHT NOW(!).

• Everyone wore jewelry and makeup. It’s a girl’s dream world!

Clothing• Men wore kilts in the Middle and New

Kingdoms, while women wore tight-fitting dresses.

• Clothes were made from linen.• Clothes were designed for comfort in

the hot, dry weather. Even with that hot sun, you can still be comfortable on your vacation in Egypt!

Housing• Homes were made of sun-dried

bricks, called adobe, because wood was scarce.

• Most people slept on the roof in the summer to escape the heat.

• Each home was equipped with a fly swatter. Good-bye bugs!

Entertainment• Most entertainment was centered around

the Nile River. Egyptians would fish, have boat rides, and swim. Fun in the sun!

• Egyptians also hosted large parties. Acrobats, musicians, singers, and dancers were hired to entertain.

• Festivals in honor of the gods happened on holidays, where people could have fun and enjoy a feast.

Government• Their ruler-called the pharaoh- was

much more than a king to the Egyptians.

• The pharaoh was believed to possess the secrets of the afterlife and the earth.

• The pharaoh had absolute power. He (or she) was in charge of EVERYTHING! That means no more worrying for you!

• One of the largest structures in the world! • Stands at a staggering 203 feet high, with a

base of 344 ft. sq.!• Was made of beautiful limestone and red

granite

• Khafre is even taller than pyramid Menkaure!• A giant, at 450 feet high!• It has an incline of over 50 degrees• Some blocks weigh up to 14,000 pounds!!!• Composed of elegant limestone and granite• Has an 11 acre base!!! That’s as big as ½ of

Alcatraz!• It is 695 ft on each side!

lifetime to see it!

Hieroglyphics• Hieroglyphics are a form of ancient Egyptian

writing who’s name means “sacred drawings”• There are three kinds of hieroglyphics:• Alphabetic, representing letter sounds• Syllabic, representing letter group sounds• Determinative, representing specific objectsAll of these are simplified to be easier to draw

• Scientists believe that hieroglyphics used to be a form of pictograms, but eventually led to standing for letter sounds.
