Goal

Project partners

• Assess the current landscape of agricultural investment data.

• Identify the data needs of donors, foundations, NGOs and others through consultations.

• Based on this input, identify needed improvements in the quality of the data published to IATI, and/or propose changes to the IATI Standard.

• Assist organizations with publishing to IATI by providing them with tools and/or technical assistance.

• Encourage donors, foundations, and NGOs to publish their data to increase the amount of high quality, standardized data publicly available.

in country X, and they’re giving away free trees let’s say, and we’re building small-scale enterprises that are tree nurseries… we need to have that information and we need to know where they are giving away these trees and obviously we would have to avoid those areas … Donors should be completely transparent about what they’re doing in countries for reasons like that — policy alignment and ensuring one donor is not… handcuffing or complicating the work of another. ”

IATI – sector codeseg: <sector code="31191"> describes “Agricultural services”

Of the 40 IATI sectors codes relevant to agriculture investments, there is a greater take-up of the more detailed five-digit codes

A small core set of codes have the most traction right now, although a “long tail” exists to represent adoption of more niche and specific classifications

A small number of IATI publishers account for most of the agriculture IATI data. These tend to be larger institutions and established IATI / OECD-DAC publishers

IATI Ag – whatBroadly speaking, these IATI activities are of “general” quality - detailing where (at country level), who (organisations) and what (descriptive text and sector codes)A much smaller subset includes data on sub-national geography & results

Next steps

Quality Collection Curation

Develop a quality framework for agriculture investment data. Which IATI fields are essential and how should they be used?

Provide quality assurance tools. Enhanced validators.

Provide publisher support. Helping to improve data quality over time.

Multiple entry points. Not all data will come from IATI. Alternative inputs will be needed for full coverage.

Pilot enhanced survey processes. Drawing on existing data, rather than starting from scratch.

Deploy data enrichment tools to classify location and subject based on documents.

Build a corpus of agriculture investment data, ready for use.
