Bottled and Kegged: Craft Brew Exhibition Opens San Diego History Center’s 2013 featured exhibition, Bottled & Kegged: San Diego’s Craft Brew Culture, showcases the rise and fall of San Diego’s early brewing history and the recent resurgence that has become one of the region’s most successful and beloved exports: craft beer. Visitors to this engaging exhibition will discover what a craft beer is; learn about brewing’s history in the San Diego region before, during, and after Prohibition, and about the brewing process; and discover why San Diego County has become a nationwide leader in craft beer production and innovation. Bottled & Kegged also explores the largely unknown world of yeast and its vital role in beer-making. The exhibition features hands on, interactive components including a 500 gallon brew house, a hop smelling and touching station, and a brew history timeline. San Diego is gaining international recognition as the brewing capital of the world. Our brewers are pushing the boundaries and creating really innovative, award winning beers. We are looking forward to sharing our collective passion as a brewing community with the public,” stated Chris Cramer, CEO & Co founder, Karl Strauss Brewing Company, and a member of the exhibition advisory committee. Craft beer-related events will complement the exhibition including public programs, brewery tours, and monthly “History Happy Hours” beginning in late May. Bottled & Kegged is suitable for all ages and will educate even the most-avid craft beer fan. The exhibition is open now and runs through January 2014. Forging Community PartnershipsFundamental to our mission is fostering community. We do so by linking San Diegans with the rich history of our region and its diverse populations, and by linking San Diegans with information about their ancestors, their neighborhoods, and even their homes.

We enhance pride in our community through engaging and informative exhibitions, such as the recent Norman Baynard and Tuna exhibitions, and, currently, through the enjoyable and educational exhibition on San Diego’s craft brew industry.

We have also developed a successful model of collaborative exhibition planning and curatorial work, where community members provide input that significantly augments our own efforts; recent examples include the Baynard and Tuna exhibitions; the E. H. Davis Photography project; and, currently underway, a community advisory planning committee for our 2014 exhibition on the U.S. Military in San Diego.

Of equal importance are the programmatic community partnerships the History Center has forged. Our Education Director and Archivist have established a highly successful partnership with La Jolla Country Day School for an ongoing oral history project, San Diego Voices. Our Public Programs Manager oversees a dynamic community partnership with the Girl Scouts that includes overnights at the Serra Museum. Our School Programs Manager devotes her primary work to our intensive School in the Park collaborative program, funded by The Price Family Charitable Fund. Our Landscapes Rediscovered exhibition has fostered a partnership with the San Diego Unified School District for a curriculum based on WPA Depression-era art by renowned San Diego painters. And our Education Department has partnered with the County Office of Education to co-host the annual History Day award program. These are just a few of the many partnerships that exist or are now forming.

Each of these partnerships enriches the lives of the participants and advances the mission of the History Center as a dynamic community resource. We honor and deeply appreciate these relationships and will continue to pursue even greater community involvement.

Donal Hord Sculptures: A Legacy of BeautyThrough a very generous bequest from longtime supporter Richard Dyson, SDHC is the recipient of a significant group of Donal Hord sculptures, many of which were displayed on loan at a seminal History Center exhibition of the artist’s work in 1999 and which will now become part of the permanent collection. The eight pieces represent a broad palette, including works in bronze, mahogany, and rosewood, reflecting the artist’s breathtakingly sinuous approach and ability to bring inert materials stunningly to life. These sculptures will augment an intriguing collection of Hord work already in the History Center’s possession: large sculptural works, maquettes, preliminary drawings, and unfinished works, as well as the artist’s tools, all of which help interpret the life and methodology of this significant artist. An additional large sculpture by the artist, Summer Rain, a gift from William Foxley, is currently on view in our Local Treasures Gallery.

Hord, who suffered from a lifelong heart condition and was “living on borrowed time,” according to former SDHC Curator of Collections, Bruce Kamerling, lived in San Diego until his death in 1966. The 1999 Hord exhibition, Donal Hord: Transcending the Solid, was accompanied by a full-color catalog as well as a Kamerling essay that first ran in the Summer 1985 Journal of San Diego History. In that essay, he lauds the artist for the “originality of his imagery and the excellence of his craftsmanship.” Kamerling also summarizes the wonderfully symbiotic relationship between Hord and his beloved home: “San Diego nurtured him, inspired him and helped him fulfill his dreams. He in turn left San Diego, and the world, a legacy of beauty that will be an inspiration and source of wonder for centuries to come.”

The History Center plans an exhibition of these newly acquired works in June 2013, alongside some of the Hord works already in our collection. Watch for announcements of what promises to be a fascinating display of works by one of San Diego’s most important artists.

Taste of San Diego Craft Brews Kicks Off “The Year of Craft Beer”A sold-out crowd attended the 4th annual Taste of San Diego Craft Brews to kick off the History Center’s “Year of Craft Beer.” The tasting event, sponsored by Wells Fargo, raised over $25,000 in support of educational outreach, research opportunities, and exhibitions at San Diego History Center. Guests sampled food and beer pairings from local breweries and restaurants and had an opportunity to bid on exceptional auction items. Many thanks to everyone who attended the launch of “The Year of Craft Beer”! • Jessica Schmidt LaFave, Membership & Development Manager

Richard Amero 1924-2012It was with great regret that we learned of the death of Richard Amero, who passed away on December 22, 2012. He was a prolific writer and researcher of local history, and his 295 volumes of research form a highly valued and well-used collection in the San Diego History Center Research Library. His great passion was Balboa Park, and, as a result, he has left us with a significant resource of informa-tion that spans the life of the Park and that is invaluable to all researchers with an interest in its history. He also contributed numerous articles to the Journal of San Diego History. He left a literary and historical legacy that will be treasured for generations to come.

SDHC Research Library: Frequently Asked QuestionsDo you have records of births, deaths, marriages, and divorces? We have no official records of births and deaths for San Diego County. The California Department of Public Health – Vital Records in Sacramento has kept records since July 1905. For earlier records, contact the San Diego County Recorder’s Office.

Regarding marriage and divorce records, we have marriage records for San Diego County from 1871 to 1960. Copies are available, but these are for information only and cannot be certified for any legal use. Divorce cases appear in the Superior Court records that we hold for 1879-1921, but again, these cannot be certified for any legal use.

The Research Library is open Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 1pm.

Volunteer OpportunitiesThanks to all of our committed volunteers who generously gave over 3,500 hours of service to the San Diego History Center in 2012! History Center Expands San Diego VoicesThe Education Department and the Research Library have partnered to expand our innovative oral history program, San Diego Voices, into underserved communities.Based on the successful program launched last year at La Jolla Country Day School and with funding from San Diego Gas & Electric’s Civic Leadership grant program, San Diego Voices will now be made available to schools and community centers throughout the county. This spring, we will focus our efforts on previously underrepresented geographic and ethnic communities to diversify our oral history collection, to instruct young people in these communities in the value of oral histories and to enhance their technical and communication skills. Joining our staff is Marianne Peterson, who brings a wealth of experience as an oral history project researcher and interviewer. One of her previous oral history projects included the expansion of the oral history collection at the Churchill County Museum in Nevada by conducting outreach to and interviewing members of the Paiute-Shoshone. The History Center is grateful to SDGE for the opportunity to continue building this extremely important program.

In another outreach initiative, the Education Department partnered with the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) to co-present a “Celebration of Learning,” honoring the student finalists of San Diego’s National History Day. We welcomed over 300 youth and their families to the History Center on March 5. Our School Programs Manager, Heather Poirier, also served as a judge for San Diego History Day on March 2, evaluating original student websites. Topics ranged from the Iranian Revolution to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Antiquities Act. Winners from San Diego will move on to compete at the state level. From there, they will move on to Nationals in Washington, DC. This year’s theme was “Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events.” For more information, visit the National History Day website at www.nhd.org.
