Experiencing Spiritual Joy and Fulfillment

I believe the antidote to the vices Jesus lists in the Gospel reading this Sunday (evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, and folly) are the fruits of the Holy Spirit. If you ever reach an unhappy place in your personal life, see how much more satisfying and liberating life can be by practicing the fruits of the Holy Spirit. They instruct us to be more loving and joyful, more patient and kind, to be good and generous, gentle, faithful, and modest, ex-ercising better self-control, and to live chaste and pure lives. These virtues help us to experience spiritual joy and fulfillment no matter what life throws at us. These virtues are sincerely needed to help us form and sustain healthy and holier vocations in the life of the Church. These virtues reflect the spiritual freedom of real disciples who are “doers of the word and not hearers only.” With what vice(s) do you struggle with the most? Dear Lord,

Thank you for teaching me to be generous as

you have been generous with me. Thank you for showing me that all I am and

have are gifts from you. And that these gifts from you, Lord, are meant

to be shared. Show me the joys of generosity.

Help me to understand others, perhaps un-known to me, depend on me for help.

Remind me that my world, my parish, needs “Good Samaritans” to heal the wounds of our

times. Make me a gift to others in your name.

Amen.

We may be assisting in the demolition of the old siding on the south side of our Church. 5. We will participate in planned Lumen Christi landscaping as well as reupholstering a number of chairs at the school to meet the demands of our increased enrollment.

Vivat Jesus Jim Seeberger, Grand Knight

It is wonderful to be back at school with our students and families. This year we welcome many new families as well as new faculty and staff to Lumen. Thank you to all St. Benedict parishioners for the support you give us!

Today we introduce Mrs. Kimberly Guzman, who joins us as our administrative assistant. Kimberly is in our office, the “face of our school,” greeting students, parents, teachers, coaches, visitors and everyone who comes in, with a smile.

Kimberly is proud to be a first generation American of Mexican descent. Her parents, Andres and Aida Vergara moved from Mexico to Los Angeles, California where she was born, and lived most of her life. Family is a big part of Kimberly’s life. She has an older sister, Ana, and two younger brothers, Andres and Joshua.

The last few years have been busy for Kimberly. After earning a psychology degree from Concordia at Irvine in 2017, she and her husband, Chris, were mar-ried in Holy Family Catholic Church in Pasadena, California. They will celebrate their 3rd anniversary on November 9th of this year. They lived in Germany, where Chris was stationed, until the Air Force brought Kimberly and Chris to Anchorage just a few months ago. She worked as supervisor and a case manager at the Arc of Anchorage before joining us here at Lumen.

Kimberly enjoys travelling. She has toured France, Poland, The Netherlands, Spain, Luxembourg, Italy, Rome, Switzerland, Belgium. England, and Mexico. She relishes spending time with her husband and her Australian Puppy, Dodger - and you might have guessed she is an avid LA Dodgers fan! Alaska is a big change from California, a change Kimberly loves. She explains that, “Growing up in LA makes me really value the chance to sit down in the qui-et and beauty of Alaska and just appreciate life.” She delighted in her first winter snows and fresh, clear sum-mer here. In reflecting on her first several weeks at Lu-men Kimberly says she loves, “what we are all about.” She says this is the first time she has been in a work en-vironment “with people who share my beliefs. Everyone gets along here. It’s a genuine community of support and Faith.” Welcome Kimberly, Chris, and Dodger!

Sand and Refinish Pews Why? After close to 40 years of use, our pews are in dire need of a facelift! The “final step” in renovating the interior of our parish church will be to have each of our 38 pews professionally refinished. This will amount to disassembling the pew, sanding all surfaces, applying several coats of clear finish, and reassembling. This is a large undertaking, be-yond our ability to do so “in house.” Once completed our pews will be in fine shape for the next 40 years! Thank you!

Rectory Renovation - Exterior Why? Built in the mid-1960’s as a rectory with separate living suites, the building today houses not only the resi-dent priest(s), but the entire parish staff. We have had the building professionally assessed as to maintenance needs. Such a renovation will include a new roof, a reconstruct-ed entry awning, restoration of the chimney, and exten-sive repairs to the sun room. Following the exterior reno-vation we’ll address interior needs. Thanks!

Family faith activities for September

1.Grandparents Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day. Help your children do something special with their grandparents or spend the day with them. 2. Decorate wooden, or even paper, letters spelling out MARY. Be as colorful and creative as you want to celebrate the Most Holy Name of Mary (September 12th). 3. Labor Day is the first Monday in September. Take the time to write a note or give a small gift to someone who works hard for your community (or for your family!). 4. Jesus is the Bread of Life. Pick out your favorite bread reci-pe and have your children help you make it. 5. Be a peacemaker. Do something nice for someone that you sometimes argue with. The feast day of St. Wenceslaus is Sept. 28th. 6. Saints can seem like people from long ago to children. Talk to them about Saint Teresa of Calcutta (when she lived and died), her work, and her writings. Her feast day is September 5th. 7. Find your favorite cross craft to create on Sept. 14th for the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. 8. Look around your room, house, or pantry for items or food to donate to the less fortunate. The feast day of St. Vincent de Paul is Sept. 27th. 9. Learn a prayer or even short phrase (like “Ora Pro Nobis,” which means “pray for us”) in Latin. St. Jerome translated the Bible from Hebrew to Latin, and his feast day is Sept. 30th. 10. September 22nd marks the beginning of Autumn. Do a fall craft together to celebrate.
