Thank you for joining us.

Homelessness is a distressing issue that concerns us all. This piece of theatre is an attempt to help us all to come to grips with it in some small way. And maybe help to push the conversation forward.

It is my wish that we will all leave the theatre with a new perspective on this situation, a new understanding of someone else’s circumstances, and a new appreciation for the complexities that make this such a difficult issue to grapple with and attempt to alleviate.

My boundless respect and gratitude to Joel Bernbaum for the remarkable work he has done on this project. His humanity and generosity has made it possible for everyone to feel safe enough to share their most intimate stories.

Artistic Director's Notes

Interviewer’s Notes

Citizens of Victoria spoke every word you hear in Home Is A Beautiful Word. These words were spoken on the streets, in coffee shops, shelters, homes, cars, classrooms, jails, parks and offices. Every interview began with the same two open-ended questions. Homelessness is…? Home is…? The answers are as varied you could possibly imagine.

Verbatim theatre − making plays out of transcripts or interviews − gives us the opportunity to be current, authentic and democratic. From the very beginning, it was my hope that this project would present a holistic view of homelessness in Victoria. I am grateful to the hun-dreds of people who shared their stories, thoughts, ideas and feelings with me. These words were faithfully transcribed, creating hundreds of pages of raw material. In editing the play, I did my best to ensure the greatest diversity of material was reflected. Each interviewee was also asked to pose questions about this issue to other citizens. I took many of these questions and asked them forward, word for word. The result is a dialogue between people who may not ever meet, except in front of you onstage.

Names have been changed to maintain confidentiality. Many of the interviewees told me that they did not mind if their real name way used. No matter what their backgrounds, they are proud of their words. I admire this, but I also appreciate that there is something universal about all these voices having pseudonyms. Any of us, could be any of them.

Thank you to all who participated in this process. Even though every interview is not includ-ed in the final script − I am grateful for every conversation. Each one of you had an impact on me, and on this play. Thank you to the Belfry Theatre for being a leader in this com-munity. And thank you for being a part of Home Is A Beautiful Word. I hope you’ll stay for Afterplay, and join the conversation.

Respectfully,Joel
