SUSTAINABILITY AND QUALITYSUSTAINABILITY AND QUALITY

6 In the industrial production of float glass, whether it is solar glass, co-loured or even bottle glass, there is continual defective or over-pro-duction waste, which comprises of around 5% of the total productionoutput.

From this industrial waste wesource our entire production ofGlaskeramik slabs. We have appliedfor and gained the Cradle2CradleGOLD and EPD certifications, be itfor LEED points or DGNB certifica-tion, following rigorous material te-sting. With these certifications ourGlas-keramik adds a meaningful di-mension to the protection of naturalresources and is especially pertinentfor sustainable builds. Aside fromthis, Glaskeramik is not just a ClosedLoop circular economy material, butout of this sustainability mindset we

also perform an environmentallyconscious production process, where the larger part of the energyinput is generated from our ownsolar power plant and the water, that we use in production, is refres-hed and recirculated.

Glaskeramik is additionally an hygie-nic, impervious and stain resistingmaterial, where in production noglues, epoxy resins or other chemi-cals are used. The result is a longstanding, easy-clean, colour safe, durable surface devoid of influencesfrom acid rain, UV or chemicals

OUR PRODUCTION PROCESS

The surface of the slabs, on exitingthe ovens, is naturally patinated andtextured; this has not only a greatfeeling to touch but also diffuseslight in a half reflection. When conti-

nuing the processing we can polish offthis surface and with that transformthe 2D effect into 3D effect bettershowing off the crystalline structure oreven add a flat satin matt surface

OUR PRODUCTION PROCESS

Glaskeramik is the newest innovative material to hit the construction, architecture and design industries. The material, being made entirely100% from recycling the waste from industrial glass production, achie-ves a true Closed Loop circular economy outcome from its manufac-ture and application. Glaskeramik is Made in Germany.

Handwork plays a critical part in ourproduction. The glass waste material is inspec-ted, broken, in a controlled manner, into shards then put through a com-plex sintering process, without needfor pressure nor binding additives, using only temperature to crystal-lize, care and attention with a little

time. In this way we produce a uni-que Glaskeramik sheet which dis-plays random yet even details. Theinherent translucent character ofthe crystallized glass allows forbacklighting possibilities and resultsin a very exciting and singular aes-thetic

APPLICATION KITCHEN

In kitchens there are various applications for Glaskeramik. These mayform the work surfaces, perhaps with polished cutouts for sinks andholes cut for tap sets or hobs or even the splashbacks or cladding forlighting devices, even the kitchen flooring can be specified.

In producing one-piece work surfa-ces with cutouts we recommend aminimum 100 mm flesh around ope-nings for safety in transit, or withoutthis we will need to add jointing. These can be unobvious joints (seeimage here of backlit Galaxy creamwhite). On kitchen work surfaces we would

recommend using our patinated sur-faces which have a certified hard-ness Mohs of 6 and are scratchresisting. For vertical cladding suchas splash- backs, especially in con-junction with lighting, we would re-commend the MOH 4 rated polished

surface as most suitable. Everydaydirt can be removed (without resor-ting to abrasion) using hot waterand universal glass cleaners.

Kitchen surfaces are well resistant toheat but heat shocks from hot pansshould be avoided. Glaskeramik hasa closed surface where cleaning andmaintenance is very easy and wit-hout need of specialist products orcleaning regimes. Glaskeramik is animpervious, stain resistant and thushygienic solution which requires nosealer or impregnation

The many versatile faces of Glaskeramik show themselves even betterin laboratory, sanitary and bathroom areas: where there may be me-thods of indirect bathroom lighting, as lit back walls and screens orvanities.

Here the polished edges and cry-stalline structure come to the fore. For example, a shower screen madeof Glaskeramik can be a main at-traction if specified in semi-transpa-rent Ice Nugget or Polar Whitetypes (polished double sided). Thefixing technology should be as perusual metal channel and shuffle gla-zing methodology using silicone ad-

hesion and soft protection. Unre-strictive from application the mate-rial can receive a safety glass statususing an additional film or full glassto Glaskeramik lamination.

To this end the safety films come ina variety of finishes and textures tocreate your desired effect

Through backlighting one cannotonly make an exciting design objectbut also use colour RGB LEDS togenerate colour palettes, as Glaske-ramik is a very even light diffuser. Sometimes with a light box 5-10cmdepth of construction or simpleLED arrays or LED strips directly onthe material or using LED lightsheets (such as Polylite) wheredepths are minimal, areas of evendiffusion are large. Glaskeramik can, much like natural stone, be cut andworked into complex forms with

waterjet and CNC tooling, but unlikestone even slumped to a curve. Wecan also provide mitre cut corners ordropped and UV glue bonded apronswithout any difficulty. In certaincases we may be able to offer eitheralmost jointless 20+20mm bondedsheet polished edges, even20+20+20 mm, and even solid thick45 mm slabs; the arisses at importantjunctions can be carefully minimizedsuch that where slabs come togetherthey can do so in a near seamlessbutted joint

Glaskeramik is a fascinating material solution for interiors, one whichalso has many application possibilities.

The play of light, detailed structure,of surface finish, texture and aesthe-tic makes for an exciting materialopportunity as yet unseen in themarket. It can be used in combination withother materials to great effect, opti-ons such as stainless steel, bronzeand brass, natural stone and con-crete make for a creative meeting ofsurfaces. The mix of effects usingwater in fountains, or pools, as well

as material on chimney pieces andfireplaces makes for great drama ina space. The Glaskeramik can evenbe used as slab flooring feature inand between other floor surfaces, with light or without it. Here we re-commend the patinated surface forslip resistance with R9 certification. With additional films, inset metalstrips or sand blasting one canachieve a slip resistance with R12certification

Glaskeramik is predestined for high value urban interiors, particularlyas wall cladding in lift lobbies and in main entrance reception areas, due to its amazing and detailed crystalline structure.

The size of the panels will be limitedonly by our maximum sheet sizes(3500 mm x 1500 mm patinated fi-nish and 3400 mm x 1400 mm po-lished finish) and the necessarystructural and fixing solutions. Fi-xings can be made flexible via un-dercut anchor or using silicon. Weight of 55 kg/m2 at 21 mm canbe reduced to a thickness of 16 or 12 mm where lift cars require this. There, simple profiles and cassette

systems can make fixing possibleand mid joints can take the test mo-vements. In some cases we canform curved material by slumpingsheets, here is an example claddingpanel beside a revolving entrancedoorway, but we can also curveshower screens in this manner. Po-lished surfaces will be engaginglytransformed during curving andshow a slight rippling effect

Glaskeramik is not only geared towards interior cladding and featuresbut also can be widely used for external facade and surfaces.

Here it not only presents itself as asustainable option with added opti-cal qualities, but also offers additio-nal technical and performanceadvantages.

Glaskeramik has a FR class of A1(Non combustible) and is frost resi-stant. During the production pro-cess we use no epoxy resins oradhesives and so the glass-like

surface stands resistant against out-side influences such as acid rain andUV damage. The materials colour isstable through its entire life which isimperative for facade uses.

Magna Glaskeramik GmbH has de-veloped a variety of facade soluti-ons to address the different needsof projects

FZP ANCHOR FAÇADE

Mixed use building Trondheim, Norway;Photo: Henrik Larsen

APPLICATION FAÇADE

The most common fixing system for rainscreen applications uses aspecial development from the Fischer Fixings specialist, Germany whohave made a particular undercut anchor.

Façade panels for this system willbe prefabricated in the factory inGermany including cut-to-size aswell as drilling and placing of theundercut anchor. As a result largeformat facades (up to 3500 mm x1500 mm depending on structuralcalculations) attached with minimaljoints and connected to standardfacade systems with horizontal pro-files are possible.

Magna Glaskeramik offers you widereaching project services, which in-cludes advice on detailed designand structural calculation support. The whole resulting rainscreen sy-stem with the Fischer FZP-GZ an-chor has both material guaranteeswhich are similar to the stone clad-ding market and also official Euro-pean Technical Approvalcertification ETA 16/0302

The David Chipperfield Architectsdesigned extension to the Am Folk-wang Museum in Essen shows offthe Glaskeramik material in a facadewith great aplomb. It expresses it-self through partial reflection anddiffusion of the changing light overthe day and, as a result, never appe-ars to look the same. Both functio-nally, aesthetically and technicallythis is a triumph of high qualityworkmanship and brings the mu-seum to a very high level in the artestablishment as well as provides

the City of Essen with both an evo-cative and urban public building aswell as a major visitor attraction. Onthis occasion they required 2780 mm x 1235 mm sized recycledGlaskeramik panels as a rainscreensystem using the Fischer FZP-GZanchor. In external environments the material can additionally be made an at-traction with backlighting. The motorway services shopping area atSchondorf Ammersee has lit facade elements in Glaskeramik as highlyvisible features as the material directs the light intensely and in a pro-nounced manner unlike other diffuser materials.

Magna Glaskeramik fitted well intothe design concept through its su-stainability and energy neutrality, added to that was its upcyclingprinciples, 100% recyclability withthe associated Cradle to Cradle(C2C), DGNB and LEED accredita-tion.

In 2019, the revolutionary Bauhauscelebrates its 100th anniversarywith a new museum building in Wei-mar. The huge grey concrete cube
