1. Animals need a healthy home, and so do you and I. In order to protect our earth, we need to make the environment cleaner.

2. In this text, we will learn about acid rain, global warming, pollution in the ocean, oil spills, and endangered species. If we know more about these issues, both humans and animals will benefit.

Acid Rain• 3. Starting a fire for a BBQ,

driving a car and producing goods

in factories all cause acid rain.

That is how people are polluting

the air more and more every day

without thinking of the harm that

we do to the environment.

Global Warming

4. Do you know that even when we do everyday things, such as driving a car or turning on an air conditioner, we create a greenhouse effect? This greenhouse effect makes the earth warmer and warmer.

Pollution in the Ocean

5. Through many things that we do every day, such as throwing out garbage, boating, spilling oil, and dumping toxic wastes, we pollute the ocean.

6. When we stop polluting the earth, we protect not only plants and animals but also ourselves.

Oil Spills

*Oil spills are usually caused by accidents.

Slowly, the thick, black oil that comes from tankers covers the surface of the ocean. As the blue water turns as black as night, animals that live in the water become black and lifeless.

7. As ships sail across the ocean, oil leaks* into the ocean.

Endangered Species

8. Each day, fewer and fewer animals can be seen. Why? It is because of whale hunting, fishing with nets and polluting animals’ homes. Do you know that when we endanger animals like whales and coral reefs, we endanger ourselves?
