Reading the holy Scriptures (the Bible) confers two benefits. It trains the mind to understand them; it turns man's attention from the follies of the world and leads him to the love of God.

THE MEANING OF OUR BAPTISM
Lent is the time of year that we devote to scrutinizing our lives in the light of our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus. Today’s readings are a nice shorthand catechism of what our baptized lives mean. As Noah passed through the waters of the flood to a covenant with God, so did we enter into a covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. The psalm reminds us that if we truly keep the covenant, the way of life God expects us to follow will not be a burden, but a source of love and truth. Peter’s letter gives one explanation of what our baptism means: it is an appeal that we make to God for a clear conscience. How do we obtain this clear conscience? The words that Jesus proclaims immediately following his temptation show us the way: “Repent and believe in the gospel.” It might be a good
spiritual exercise to keep these readings before us throughout the entire season of Lent, a means to help us return to a life lived in our baptismal promises.

GRIEF EDUCATION/
SUPPORT SERIES: The Consolation Ministry is sponsoring a series of support/education meetings beginning on Saturday, March 7th through April 25th. The meetings will be held from 10am –noon in the Large Meeting Room in
the Education/Office Building at 566 E. Lassen Ave. The sessions will focus on the various aspects of grief which one the natural response when we have experienced a major loss. To register please contact Lyn Dorenzo at 891-8026 – evenings or the church office at 343-4248.
SOUP SUPPERS AND
STATIONS OF THE CROSS: Our ministries and organizations will once again be sponsoring our Soup Suppers and Stations of the Cross on Friday evenings during Lent. Soup will be served at 6 pm in the Small Reception Room of the social hall and the stations will begin at 7 pm in the church. This is a wonderful way to remember and honor Jesus’ journey to the crucifixion from beginning to end. Attending Stations of the Cross is a wonderful way to remind ourselves of the reason for the Lenten season, and to stay more diligent on our own path toward a more devout love for Christ and His Church.

IN THE DESERT WITH HIM: If we’re honest, many of us approach Lent with dread. A season

of sacrifice sounds so harsh, so sterile. And forty days, no less! We look ahead with trepidation. What could be good about such a long, dark period?
Stop and look again. Yes, Lent brings a bit of the wilderness into our Christian year. It asks us to stand away from the comforts of life in the city. Lent calls us into the desert with Jesus. From the silent sands He beckons us to join Him in His trials, reminding us that He has walked the burning path first. And it is His blessed companionship that makes it worth the price. “Come, child, be alone with me and we will find a road through the desert together.”

And seek your Father’s face
Those new desires which in you burn
Were kindled by His grace

And find your Lenten footsteps

TRADITIONS TRADITIONS TRADITIONS TRADITIONS
TREASURES FROM OUR
TRADITION: Fasting may be a priority in your Lenten spring cleaning regimen. Almost every religious tradition recognizes that fasting is a key to heightened spiritual awareness. You know this from your own experience. When you are engaged in a hobby, painting a room, keeping vigil near a delivery room, or standing watch at a sickbed, you may simply forget to eat. What you are doing so fills you that the intensity of the action is itself nourishing. In fasting from food, or drink, or habitual behaviors, you make room for what is truly important.
Even though Lenten Sundays stand apart from the Lenten fast, you will notice traces of fasting in our liturgy. We fast from singing the Gloria and Alleluia, we fast from flowers bedecking the altar, and there may be a noticeable drop in the number of infant baptisms as parents elect to wait until Easter. This hints that fasting is a prelude to feasting, and the vigor of our Easter alleluias is rich fare after a long silence. In the same way, even a small fast—no cream in the coffee, no pepper in the soup, no radio in the car—can not only point to deeper hungers, but help us rejoice more fully in the feast when we break our fast together.

SACRAMENTS
It's the season of Sacraments. We currently have 19 students preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation and 32 students preparing to receive their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.
Do you have children who need and want to receive the Sacraments? Students are eligible to receive their first sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion any time after 2nd grade. Our program is designed to accommodate students in 2nd-7th grade when they and their family are ready. Students are eligible to receive their Confirmation after 8th grade when they and their family are ready.
How do you know if your student and your family is ready? You are probably ready when your family is able to attend Mass and religious education classes regularly. Sacrament preparation is 2 years. We look forward to preparing for and celebrating this special time with our Parish families. Please contact the Religious Education office at 345-6201 for more information.

Hunger is year-round!
When Our Divine Savior parish first began food
drives, under Fr. Simon's kind influence, the goal
was to collect food between Thanksgiving and
Christmas. As time went by, more and more non-
perishable food items were donated, sometimes to
the point of no space to collect them! For the last two
years, the food drive has been year-round, and the
community is invited to bring non-perishable foods
to Mass the first weekend of the month. Children are
encouraged to bring up the food during the offertory
procession, symbolizing our community outreach to
the hungry.
Just before he transferred, Fr. Renier asked Joan
Costa to prepare a report on the difference between
the two ways of handling food donations. It turns out
there is a big difference in the total amount of food
collected. The year-round drive brought in 700
pounds of food MORE than the holiday-only drive.
The obvious conclusion is that it works best to bring
food throughout the year.
Items are donated to the Food Locker, and the more
predictable availability of food allows them to meet
the needs of the hungry at every season, not just the
holidays. Join the effort! Bring your non-perishable
items (canned or dried) to Mass the weekend of Feb.
28-March 1. If you are too shy to bring them up to
the altar, you may be able to recruit a willing child,
or you can leave the food in the Altar Server's Room
off of the vestibule. Thank you for making this big
difference for our hungry brothers and sisters!
