Our Flu Link Nurses
We will be shining the spotlight on our Hidden Heroes who are busy working behind thescenes to support our colleagues on the frontline Those of you who may not be visible onthe shop floor but who all play a crucial role and help to keep our organisation running andmake what we do on the frontline possible
Our Hidden Heroes campaign will celebrate the contribution our NCA Family make in ourhospitals and out in the community ensuring our day to day operations run smoothly
Our NCA flu link workers provide valuable practical support during the annual staff fluvaccination campaign following their online training programme The flu steering group willidentify two link nurses for each ward this year and it is their job to undertake the trainingand provide flu vaccinations for their areas of work
It is important that the flu vaccination programme is flexible to ensure as many workers aspossible can access the vaccination Our flu link workers play a significant role within theprogramme which allows our front line staff and colleagues to be vaccinated in the easiestway possible
Our flu link workers truly are hidden heroes - they will strengthen our campaign andcontribute to the prevention of transmission of flu help protect staff their families andthose that they care for To book a flu link worker training session visit the staff intranetor click here

This is your chance to give a lsquoshout outrsquo to your colleagues - celebrate those who aregoing above and beyond thank someone who has really made your day shine a light on acolleague who really makes a positive difference on your ward department or office
Itrsquos not just our staff that make a big impression on our patients Our volunteers go aboveand beyond to deliver a fantastic service to patients ndash and it doesnrsquot go unnoticed MattGodleman a volunteer at The Royal Oldham Hospital certainly made an impression on apatient and her husband who visited the hospital recently The patient was so pleased withthe way that Matt assisted her that she got in touch following her visit to say a big thankyou
She said ldquoI would like to thank the young man who was working on reception on Mondayafternoon on 3rd August My doctor had phoned ahead and booked me into the SurgicalTriage Unit as I was in a lot of pain Thanks to this young man he took us up to wardF5 as my wife was very upset On arriving at the ward he waited until I had been bookedin then brought my wife back down to reception and had a chat with her for a few minutesHe is a credit to the hospital I know the health service is working under enormouspressure at the moment but he went the extra mile He was so kind

I have been in St John Ambulance (SJA) since I was 10 years old and I have had manyroles in the organisations at all levels I am currently the Unit Manager in Radcliffe theoldest established unit in Manchester (over 100 years old)
The Covid-19 pandemic has provided SJA with some challenges all events we cover werecancelled for a start We turned our attention to recruitment retraining and supporting theNHS We have spent time recruiting from the Red Cross as they moved away from eventcover the public and in particular the talents of the air stewards who come with fantasticpublic service skills All the volunteers have played their part supporting the NHS in thehospital settings transport and the Blood Transfusion Service
I love what I do and enjoy supporting all the volunteers old and new We have alldeveloped new ways of working to allow us to carry on with our volunteering be itsupporting the NHS our local community creating friend groups and delivering foodparcels Its been humbling to be a part of it

Nick Lees has taken up the post as Clinical Director for Salford Royalrsquos forthcoming AcuteReceiving Centre
Nick who is also a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon will be responsible for planning thedelivery of clinical services within the new build including major traumathinspemergencyabdominal surgery and stroke assessment
Planning permission for the development has already been granted and we hope to startbuilding work soon to welcome the amazing advances in care and treatment that the ARCwill offer for patients in Salford and more widely across Greater Manchester

Meet our Cygnets working across the NCA
Cygnets play a crucial role across the NCA preventing people from dying alone The role
was created due to the restrictions imposed on visiting for relatives and loved ones of endof life patients during the COVID-19 pandemic
The creators of the SWAN model of End of Life Care recruited a cohort of individuals frommany different backgrounds - from healthcare professionals to students to administrators tovolunteers - all of whom has the same aim to support people who are dying along withtheir families
Ciara Blackhurst (pictured) is a first year Medical Student who had limited experienceinteracting with end of life patients and their families but she says it has been a privilegeto have the opportunity to help strengthen communicative links between ward staffand patients families
ldquoDuring my induction I received training in oral care taking mementos care after death(including faith deaths) and contacting a patientrsquos next of kin amongst other aspects ofend of life care Initially I found the latter part of the cygnet role daunting however I soonrealised that a telephone call to inform a relative that I had spent time with their loved oneduring which I had held their hand played their preferred music performed oral care with aflavour of their choice and perhaps read a couple of chapters of their favourite booksignificantly relieved some of their anxiety and allowed them to share a special connectiondespite being apart I frequently facilitated video calls between end of life patients andunlimited family members which helped to ease some of the emotional difficultysurrounding nominating only one person to visit for one hour per day
ldquoMy experience as a cygnet has been immensely poignant and rewarding It hasencouraged me to explore a career in palliative and end of life care due to the profounddifference it can make not only to patients but to their loved ones alike I have learned thatthrough small actions and gestures we can personalise patient care and that when there isno possibility of curing illness it is imperative to ensure that patients die without pain anddistress and are cared for with utmost compassionrdquo

Butler Green celebrates its 9th Birthday
Staff at Butler Green have been celebrating the 9th birthday of the centre Butler GreenEnhanced Intermediate Care opened its doors in August 2011 and was one of the first of
its kind to offer Enhanced Intermediate Care within the North West
Butler Green has developed and grown over the past 9 years The service developed withthe expansion to the Community IV team in 2013 More recently it has adapted its clinicalpathways to accommodate COVID positive patients throughout the pandemic
Butler Green has been identified by NHS England as one of the top ten intermediate carefacilities in the UK and is an award-winning establishment that has won many awards forinnovation service improvement and the OPAT community IV team
Over the years the team have developed clinical pathways and changed their ways ofworking to meet the demands across community services They were the first in thecountry to use the baxter 24-hour flucloxacillin pump and this was shared nationally as acentre of excellence
We wish Butler Green a Happy 9th Birthday and look forward to the next 12 months as theteam continue to innovate and develop the community offer Congratulations Team ButlerGreen
Psychological and emotional support for all staff
The Greater Manchester Resilience Hub provides psychological and emotional wellbeingsupport to frontline health and care workers who may have been affected by Covid-19This includes those who have been saving lives providing care and end of life care aswell as services for people who have died from Covid-19 (this includes all staff such ascleaners porters security and other ancillary staff) They offer help and support to you and your family if you have experienced stressful ortraumatic events associated with Covid More information can be found here

Overthinspthe past few months during one of thethinspmost challenging times the NHS has everexperienced our staff have made remarkable achievements
We want to continue to support staff and help them recognise the achievements they havemade either individually or as a team
To help us discover more about the brilliant things that are happening we are trialling anew approach to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our staff through theapplication of Appreciative Inquiry (AI) This will initially be trialled with Salford staff androlled out across the NCA if successful
Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a provocative approach to learning and change that canencouragingthinspand enable people to be positive and build relationships that enable people tounderstand how roles relate to each other

This August our Salford Physiotherapists are committed to embracing and promoting theWeActiveChallenge2020 twitter competition
This twitter campaign is just one initiative to help kick-start new habits through a bit of funand friendly competition
The aim is to raise the profile of the importance of peer support and role modelling inphysical activity practice what we teachpreach as health and care staff and motivateinspire and create a sense of community

Lisa scoops student-led teaching award
Big congratulations to Lisa Cooper from the Vascular Clinical Audit and Research Team atThe Royal Oldham on winning the 2020 Student Led Award for lsquoBest Non-Teachinghospital-based member of staffrsquo from The University of Manchester
The award is voted for by students and reflects Lisarsquos fantastic contribution and hard worksupporting Manchester Medical School students whilst they are on placement in Oldham Ithighlights the appreciation and gratitude of students for the support Lisa provides in whatcan sometimes be an unfamiliar and intimidating environment for them when they comeon placement
Professor Felicity Stewart Director of Undergraduate Medical Studies at The University ofManchester notes the high esteem in which Lisa is held by students ldquoLisa is seen as theheart of the department by the whole team but especially by the medical students andjunior doctors who work with us

Feedback on Care Opinion I attended Rochdale Infirmary on the advice of 111 and due to personalcircumstances was asked to use the potential covid entrance to the hospital Proper procedures werefollowed masks PPE distancing staff were very careful Staff were friendly helpful and professional
Facebook Feedback I visited Rochdale Infirmary outpatients today with a family member Greeted at thedoor by a member of the hospital team who guided us through the Covid prevention procedures bothentering and leaving Well organised friendly and reassuring Welll done that man Thank you

Nick Lees has taken up the post as Clinical Director for Salford Royalrsquos forthcoming AcuteReceiving Centre
Nick who is also a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon will be responsible for planning thedelivery of clinical services within the new build including major traumathinspemergencyabdominal surgery and stroke assessment
Planning permission for the development has already been granted and we hope to startbuilding work soon to welcome the amazing advances in care and treatment that the ARCwill offer for patients in Salford and more widely across Greater Manchester

Meet our Cygnets working across the NCA
Cygnets play a crucial role across the NCA preventing people from dying alone The role
was created due to the restrictions imposed on visiting for relatives and loved ones of endof life patients during the COVID-19 pandemic
The creators of the SWAN model of End of Life Care recruited a cohort of individuals frommany different backgrounds - from healthcare professionals to students to administrators tovolunteers - all of whom has the same aim to support people who are dying along withtheir families
Ciara Blackhurst (pictured) is a first year Medical Student who had limited experienceinteracting with end of life patients and their families but she says it has been a privilegeto have the opportunity to help strengthen communicative links between ward staffand patients families
ldquoDuring my induction I received training in oral care taking mementos care after death(including faith deaths) and contacting a patientrsquos next of kin amongst other aspects ofend of life care Initially I found the latter part of the cygnet role daunting however I soonrealised that a telephone call to inform a relative that I had spent time with their loved oneduring which I had held their hand played their preferred music performed oral care with aflavour of their choice and perhaps read a couple of chapters of their favourite booksignificantly relieved some of their anxiety and allowed them to share a special connectiondespite being apart I frequently facilitated video calls between end of life patients andunlimited family members which helped to ease some of the emotional difficultysurrounding nominating only one person to visit for one hour per day
ldquoMy experience as a cygnet has been immensely poignant and rewarding It hasencouraged me to explore a career in palliative and end of life care due to the profounddifference it can make not only to patients but to their loved ones alike I have learned thatthrough small actions and gestures we can personalise patient care and that when there isno possibility of curing illness it is imperative to ensure that patients die without pain anddistress and are cared for with utmost compassionrdquo

Butler Green celebrates its 9th Birthday
Staff at Butler Green have been celebrating the 9th birthday of the centre Butler GreenEnhanced Intermediate Care opened its doors in August 2011 and was one of the first of
its kind to offer Enhanced Intermediate Care within the North West
Butler Green has developed and grown over the past 9 years The service developed withthe expansion to the Community IV team in 2013 More recently it has adapted its clinicalpathways to accommodate COVID positive patients throughout the pandemic
Butler Green has been identified by NHS England as one of the top ten intermediate carefacilities in the UK and is an award-winning establishment that has won many awards forinnovation service improvement and the OPAT community IV team
Over the years the team have developed clinical pathways and changed their ways ofworking to meet the demands across community services They were the first in thecountry to use the baxter 24-hour flucloxacillin pump and this was shared nationally as acentre of excellence
We wish Butler Green a Happy 9th Birthday and look forward to the next 12 months as theteam continue to innovate and develop the community offer Congratulations Team ButlerGreen

We want to continue to support staff and help them recognise the achievements they havemade either individually or as a team
To help us discover more about the brilliant things that are happening we are trialling anew approach to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our staff through theapplication of Appreciative Inquiry (AI) This will initially be trialled with Salford staff androlled out across the NCA if successful
Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a provocative approach to learning and change that canencouragingthinspand enable people to be positive and build relationships that enable people tounderstand how roles relate to each other

This twitter campaign is just one initiative to help kick-start new habits through a bit of funand friendly competition
The aim is to raise the profile of the importance of peer support and role modelling inphysical activity practice what we teachpreach as health and care staff and motivateinspire and create a sense of community

Big congratulations to Lisa Cooper from the Vascular Clinical Audit and Research Team atThe Royal Oldham on winning the 2020 Student Led Award for lsquoBest Non-Teachinghospital-based member of staffrsquo from The University of Manchester
The award is voted for by students and reflects Lisarsquos fantastic contribution and hard worksupporting Manchester Medical School students whilst they are on placement in Oldham Ithighlights the appreciation and gratitude of students for the support Lisa provides in whatcan sometimes be an unfamiliar and intimidating environment for them when they comeon placement

I have been in St John Ambulance (SJA) since I was 10 years old and I have had manyroles in the organisations at all levels I am currently the Unit Manager in Radcliffe theoldest established unit in Manchester (over 100 years old)
The Covid-19 pandemic has provided SJA with some challenges all events we cover werecancelled for a start We turned our attention to recruitment retraining and supporting theNHS We have spent time recruiting from the Red Cross as they moved away from eventcover the public and in particular the talents of the air stewards who come with fantasticpublic service skills All the volunteers have played their part supporting the NHS in thehospital settings transport and the Blood Transfusion Service

Nick Lees has taken up the post as Clinical Director for Salford Royalrsquos forthcoming AcuteReceiving Centre
Nick who is also a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon will be responsible for planning thedelivery of clinical services within the new build including major traumathinspemergencyabdominal surgery and stroke assessment
Planning permission for the development has already been granted and we hope to startbuilding work soon to welcome the amazing advances in care and treatment that the ARCwill offer for patients in Salford and more widely across Greater Manchester

Meet our Cygnets working across the NCA
Cygnets play a crucial role across the NCA preventing people from dying alone The role
was created due to the restrictions imposed on visiting for relatives and loved ones of endof life patients during the COVID-19 pandemic
The creators of the SWAN model of End of Life Care recruited a cohort of individuals frommany different backgrounds - from healthcare professionals to students to administrators tovolunteers - all of whom has the same aim to support people who are dying along withtheir families
Ciara Blackhurst (pictured) is a first year Medical Student who had limited experienceinteracting with end of life patients and their families but she says it has been a privilegeto have the opportunity to help strengthen communicative links between ward staffand patients families
ldquoDuring my induction I received training in oral care taking mementos care after death(including faith deaths) and contacting a patientrsquos next of kin amongst other aspects ofend of life care Initially I found the latter part of the cygnet role daunting however I soonrealised that a telephone call to inform a relative that I had spent time with their loved oneduring which I had held their hand played their preferred music performed oral care with aflavour of their choice and perhaps read a couple of chapters of their favourite booksignificantly relieved some of their anxiety and allowed them to share a special connectiondespite being apart I frequently facilitated video calls between end of life patients andunlimited family members which helped to ease some of the emotional difficultysurrounding nominating only one person to visit for one hour per day
ldquoMy experience as a cygnet has been immensely poignant and rewarding It hasencouraged me to explore a career in palliative and end of life care due to the profounddifference it can make not only to patients but to their loved ones alike I have learned thatthrough small actions and gestures we can personalise patient care and that when there isno possibility of curing illness it is imperative to ensure that patients die without pain anddistress and are cared for with utmost compassionrdquo

Staff at Butler Green have been celebrating the 9th birthday of the centre Butler GreenEnhanced Intermediate Care opened its doors in August 2011 and was one of the first of
its kind to offer Enhanced Intermediate Care within the North West
Butler Green has developed and grown over the past 9 years The service developed withthe expansion to the Community IV team in 2013 More recently it has adapted its clinicalpathways to accommodate COVID positive patients throughout the pandemic
Butler Green has been identified by NHS England as one of the top ten intermediate carefacilities in the UK and is an award-winning establishment that has won many awards forinnovation service improvement and the OPAT community IV team
Over the years the team have developed clinical pathways and changed their ways ofworking to meet the demands across community services They were the first in thecountry to use the baxter 24-hour flucloxacillin pump and this was shared nationally as acentre of excellence
We wish Butler Green a Happy 9th Birthday and look forward to the next 12 months as theteam continue to innovate and develop the community offer Congratulations Team ButlerGreen

The Greater Manchester Resilience Hub provides psychological and emotional wellbeingsupport to frontline health and care workers who may have been affected by Covid-19This includes those who have been saving lives providing care and end of life care aswell as services for people who have died from Covid-19 (this includes all staff such ascleaners porters security and other ancillary staff) They offer help and support to you and your family if you have experienced stressful ortraumatic events associated with Covid More information can be found here

We want to continue to support staff and help them recognise the achievements they havemade either individually or as a team
To help us discover more about the brilliant things that are happening we are trialling anew approach to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our staff through theapplication of Appreciative Inquiry (AI) This will initially be trialled with Salford staff androlled out across the NCA if successful
Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a provocative approach to learning and change that canencouragingthinspand enable people to be positive and build relationships that enable people tounderstand how roles relate to each other

This twitter campaign is just one initiative to help kick-start new habits through a bit of funand friendly competition
The aim is to raise the profile of the importance of peer support and role modelling inphysical activity practice what we teachpreach as health and care staff and motivateinspire and create a sense of community

Lisa scoops student-led teaching award
Big congratulations to Lisa Cooper from the Vascular Clinical Audit and Research Team atThe Royal Oldham on winning the 2020 Student Led Award for lsquoBest Non-Teachinghospital-based member of staffrsquo from The University of Manchester
The award is voted for by students and reflects Lisarsquos fantastic contribution and hard worksupporting Manchester Medical School students whilst they are on placement in Oldham Ithighlights the appreciation and gratitude of students for the support Lisa provides in whatcan sometimes be an unfamiliar and intimidating environment for them when they comeon placement

Feedback on Care Opinion I attended Rochdale Infirmary on the advice of 111 and due to personalcircumstances was asked to use the potential covid entrance to the hospital Proper procedures werefollowed masks PPE distancing staff were very careful Staff were friendly helpful and professional
